BLOOD KISSES is advertised as a vampire indie but it very much plays out as a typical police procedural thriller. The emphasis is on the low key here and even the New York shooting locations adds little to the experience. Police hunt for a murderer who just so happens to be a vampire, or is he? You'll neither know nor care in this slow moving effort that features cod psychology and bored dialogue delivery throughout. I found it half hearted with nothing in the way of thrills or excitement.

This is a thriller and police procedural.

Given the fact that this was not some lavish Hollywood production--with all of the money and resources thrown at it--this was a very fine film by an extremely talented director. This is key. Yes, this was an indie on a modest budget, but every frame, every scene, and all of the dialogue, whether extended or in tasty bites, was fashioned with admirable skill with a confident, talented film maker at the helm. The viewer is drawn into the film instantaneously, and Mr. Kornhiser creates a world that is at once recognizable and surreal. This is not an easy trajectory. We are fascinated and thrilled by the uncertainty of this reality, and that--apart from the technical mastery--makes for a most compelling film.
