Teyana Taylor had a breakout year as an actress last year, starring in “The Book of Clarence,” “White Men Can’t Jump,” and most notably her Film Independent Spirit Award-nominated performance in the brilliant “A Thousand and One.” But the R&b star is now making the leap to feature film director.
Taylor is set to make her feature directorial debut on a film called “Get Lite” that is now in development at Paramount Pictures, an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire. She’s cast Storm Reid in the lead role.
Reid is also producing the film through her production banner A Seed & Wings Productions, and she’ll be producing alongside “Black-ish” creator Kenya Barris via his Khalabo Ink Society. Taylor is executive producing.

If you’re wondering what’s new on Amazon Prime Video in June, the answer is a lot. The streamer has a solid slate of movies heading into summer 2023. From the first two “Creed” films to “Love, Rosie,” “Yours, Mine & Ours” and other clever romantic comedies, the streamer has a range of options for viewers with different tastes. Newer theatrical releases arriving on the streamer in June include “TÁR,” “Armageddon Time,” and “M3GAN.”
TV premieres to look forward to include Boots Riley’s “I’m A Virgo” and the fourth and final season of John Krasinski’s “Jack Ryan.” “Crazy Rich Asians” arrives early in June, followed by “Interstellar” for all Christopher Nolan and Matthew McConaughey lovers. Even though “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” doesn’t release in theaters until November, all four “Hunger Games” films land on Prime Video this June. Perfect timing — maybe even with a reread...

With its list of new releases for June 2023, Prime is bringing a handful of Amazon Originals and many recent movie hits to the fold.
It’s actually quite a busy month for non-American programming in Amazon Originals department. Shows and movies like Deadloch, My Fault, and Medellín all originate from outside the U.S. and U.K. For the American and British crowd, however, the streamer is debuting two big tentpoles.
The first is I’m a Virgo on June 23. Acclaimed director Boots Riley’s TV followup to Sorry to Bother You will tale the surreal and satirical tale of a giant in Oakland. That will be followed by the more conventional (assumedly) fourth season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan on June 30.
The real fireworks this month come from a ludicrously deep bench of library TV and movie titles. Give them a look for yourself below but if we were to highlight just a few,...

“Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets” is a new docuseries that reveals the truth behind the myth of the wholesome religious family and their involvement with the predatory Bill Gothard and The Institute in Basic Life Principles. The organization’s abusive practices — and the insidious long political game it plays — is revealed on June 2. The Duggars and their 19 “happy” kids are exposed as frauds, while also being manipulated by Gothard and enduring the scandal of Josh, their sexually abusive son.

Who’d have thought that Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider and David Spade would be in a film under the banner of Grown Ups? The proof is in the pudding, as the latest Happy Madison production lands on Blu-ray and DVD today.
Follow the leap for my review.
Given the cast – a rag-tag bunch of comedians known for their gurning man-child routines – it isn’t surprising that Grown Ups is far from mature. In fact, immaturity abounds as the crew verbally bash one another while Kevin James falls over as many times as possible in under two hours and everyone laughs at how outrageous Rob Schneider’s relationship with a pensioner is.
At this point my reviews usually look at plot mechanics and the subtleties of the film-making process, so this is going to have to be a short section. Grown Ups is brazen, unrefined and silly, with little in the way of nuance,...

It's a big release day for TV box sets, and not a heck of a lot else. The only major movie hitting DVD and Blu-ray this week is Ridley Scott's Robin Hood, and although I wasn't particularly taken with the film, I am slightly curious about the Unrated Director's Cut. Also out this week is the Academy Award-winning Spanish thriller The Secret in their Eyes, Harmony Korine's Trash Humpers and Neil Jordan's Ondine starring Colin Farrell, plus two direct-to-dvd releases: the remake of The Experiment starring Adrien Brody and Stomp the Yard 2: Homecoming. Get your sitcom fix with new seasons of 30 Rock, Community, Modern Family, and How I Met Your Mother, or get your T&A fix with Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Do you see anything worth picking up this week? Robin Hood: Director's Cut [1] (+ Blu-ray [2]) The Secret in their Eyes [3] (+ Blu-ray [4]) The Experiment [5] (+ Blu-ray [6]) Stomp the Yard: Homecoming...

The Secret In Their Eyes Winner of last year's Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, The Secret in Their Eyes is this week's best option for purchase and while I think it is a good film, I'm not certain it's a film I'd recommend buying. It felt like more of a masterful episode of "C.S.I." with an impressive production budget than anything else. I never found myself fully immersed in the story as much as I was intrigued on a surface level. I recognize it as a solid piece of filmmaking, and can understand why others really like it, but it just didn't move me in the same way. 30 Rock: Season Four One of several DVDs that arrived just before I set off for Toronto, season four of "30 Rock" is one I intend to watch as soon as time allows.

The American Black Film Festival (Abff) bows next month, in Miami, Fl, running from June 23 through the 26th. I’m still waiting to find out what films are scheduled to screen at the festival this year (they haven’t announced yet, but I hope they do soon); however, I just learned (via Black Voices) that Takers (the ensemble heist flick, starring Idris Elba, Zoe Saldana and others) will be the festival’s opening night film.
Also, Stomp The Yard 2: Homecoming will be the festival’s centerpiece film.
Both titles come from producer/director duo Will Packer and Rob Hardy of Atlanta-based Rainforest Films. So, those who will be present for the festival will get first looks at both films, and will then be able to report back to the rest of us.
And thanks to their tweets, I’m aware of several Nyu film school grad students whose short...

Inspiration doesn’t always come from a likely source. In many cases, it comes when you least expect it, and in the most unexpected ways. This was the case for Choreographer, Chuck Maldonado, whose chance meeting with a superstar recording artist, led to an unbelievably successful career in dance.
During his break between filming and rehearsals, for the February 2010 box office sequel, Stomp The Yard 2: Homecoming, Chuck sat down with Iae and shared how he went from corporate America to becoming one of music and film’s most sought after choreographers.
Iae: Tell us about some of the film projects you’re working on now?
Cm: Well, currently I’m working on Stomp the Yard 2: Homecoming, which is my 19th movie, by the way. This is the movie that I’m most proud of because I’m bringing a lot of me with the dance. Like the characters in the film,...
