The various Popes...
sarah_edwards16 January 2023
Whilst I struggle a little with the timeline jumping backwards & forwards, the one thing which makes it obvious which younger character is which is the brilliant acting by the younger Pope, who manages to mirror the older actor's stiff body positions, clenched jaw & moodiness too a t. Brilliant acting by someone who has clearly done his homework & is a joy to watch. Whilst their physical characteristics are a little different the casting here works perfectly due to the similarities in their body language & movement. Younger Smurf has also clearly done her homework & whilst I didn't initially like these forays back onto the past, they're shaping up well in informing the present.

So far one of my least favorite seasons...
KRhea334 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
But I am hopeful it will improve over the latter half as this is the last season. Plenty of episodes still to come and I will be watching them all.

That said, this show Has been one of my favorite shows. Season 4 was off the charts outstanding as well, so my hopes were very high for this one. No matter the ending here, it will remain one of my favorites shows!!

Season 5 was a bit tedious with all the flashbacks, but at least there aren't AS MANY now. Still too many for my personal taste.

My issues with this season:

1. Smart J seems to making some terrible choices. From wanting to rob the psycho jeweler to dating the con-artist law firm aide looking to steal everything he's got. I don't buy his interest in her and her pushing him away this episode seems like it's just all part of her plan.

2. Then there's Craig who has always been the one making bad choices, instead try to make good choices. M Kay. Hmm. And do not get me started on Vince. I find myself wanting to fast forward all of his growing number of scenes. The guy dropped one addiction (drinking/drugs) for another (stealing).

3. Pope's gonna go back to church and seems likely at this point to end up back in prison for killing Catherine. He's got so many unresolved issues, but he's only here on my list because of young Pope and his awkward stares. It's got to be hard to try and back up the talents of Shawn Hatosy!

4. Deran doesn't make this list, but I do miss Adrian terribly.

5. I still really miss Baz, but I hope he sticks around on Grey's at least.

Warning: Spoilers
The flashback scenes are getting a bit too repetitive here. Not sure they're accomplishing anything, but the heists in the present day remain relatively fun so that counts too.

Exhausting and Boring At The Same Time.
jamericanbeauty5 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The flashbacks, the many, frequent, cutaway flashbacks are exhausting because I feel like I'm watching two shows: Animal Kingdom present-day and Animal Kingdom, the prequel. Why didn't the showrunners just make a prequel series once Animal Kingdom wraps? I would not watch it. I can't stand the smirking, tough-guy act of the actress playing Young Smurf. It got old last season. The flashbacks add nothing to the show. We know Smurf's a horrible Mother, who corrupted her children and manipulated their talents, hopes, destinies and passions to form her Cody Crime Family. We know this because the script in past seasons told us that. Baz, Julia and Smurf are all presently dead. Why are we spending so much time on them via flashbacks? To learn how Andrew "Pope" became Pope? We already know Pope is a morally conflicted person based on past seasons. We don't need flashbacks to tell us exactly how he got nicknamed Pope. Ambiguity is good sometimes. J seems totally out of character. He's always cold, ruthless, and calculating but also the logical, rational one. What's up with the reckless affair with the married military Wife/Bank Secretary? Sex in her home car port as her Husband sleeps inside. Really? She has greedy, scheming thievery eyes. J normally moves methodically, so maybe there's some rhyme to his reason. Last season, the flashbacks killed the flow of the present-day actions. There wasn't alot of action, but more than this season, where nothing's really going on, except a loooong build-up to a big heist. Besides the fiery first episode, everything's just coasting on its previous superior seasons. It feels like the show has been in mourning the past two seasons after Smurf died. Why not end the show after she died, if you have nothing else to give us Day 1 diehard fans? Everything is dreary, dragging or predictable. Where's the thrills of heists or "jobs" or tension between the characters? Or power struggles between the new dynamics of the Cody Crime Family without Smurf?

Unwatchable now

Warning: Spoilers
I literally fast forwarded through any scene with Pope. At either age. And when they can make Craig boring, that leaves only Deren who's the most interesting remaining character. And J now has a poorly written story line, "Do you want me leave?" So bad.

The show's producers have broken this show. They never should have killed off Smurf.

Just boring and bad now.
