The 4:30 Movie is the sixteenth feature film from director Kevin Smith – and while he was making the movie, he thought he was making something that would get a PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. But the MPA saw it differently. When they had the chance to watch the movie earlier this year, they felt the sexual references in the dialogue were enough for the movie to earn an R rating for sexual content. Smith appealed the rating (and subscribers to That Kevin Smith Club got some interesting insight into the appeals process), but the ratings board decided to stick with the R. They confirmed today that The 4:30 Movie will remain an R rated film.
Smith has a history of being able to get his films re-rated on appeal. Clerks and Zack and Miri Make a Porno were both given Nc-17 ratings, but were re-rated R on appeal.

Saban Films announced today the acquisition of worldwide rights to the upcoming comedy The 4:30 Movie, directed and written by Kevin Smith.
Set in the summer of 1986, The 4:30 Movie is a coming-of-age story about three sixteen-year-old friends who spend their Saturdays sneaking into movies at the local multiplex. But when one of the guys also invites the girl of his dreams (Siena Agudong) to see the latest comedy, each of the teens will learn something serious about life and love before the credits roll.
Set in the mobile phoneless, social media-free era of the ’80s, Smith shot The 4:30 Movie at his Smodcastle Cinemas in New Jersey—the same movie theater he haunted every weekend as a teenager. Two years ago, Smith and his co-owners saved the century-old Atlantic Highlands bijou from demolition, renaming it after his podcast theater.

Catfish: The TV Show stars Nev Schulman and Kamie Crawford shared that the new MTV season will be the darkest they’ve filmed to date, which includes quite a few shocking money scams.
“We have some uplifting, happy-ending episodes, but yeah, I think people are going harder. They’re giving more money. They’re making bigger sort of irreversible decisions,” Schulman told Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “I don’t know if it’s desperation that people feel in terms of trying to find someone or force themselves into these relationships, despite the many roadblocks and red flags. But yeah, things get a little kind of dark.”
“This season is the most money we’ve seen someone spend on Catfish before … ever,” Crawford added. “I mean, collectively, this whole entire rest of the season is going to be a lot of money spent. Get your calculators out. Add it up. I think...

After starring in the comedy Vacation Friends (which I enjoyed much more than our reviewer did) and its sequel (didn’t watch that one yet) for the Hulu streaming service, Lil Rel Howery has taken the lead in another Hulu Original – but this time they switched up genres. Their new collaboration is the sci-fi horror movie The Mill, which is set to start streaming on October 9th as part of the service’s “Huluween” event. With that release date just over a week away, we’ve gotten our hands on a trailer for The Mill, and you can check it out in the embed above.
Directed by Sean King O’Grady (We Need to Do Something) from a screenplay by Jeffrey David Thomas (All American: Homecoming), The Mill sees Howery playing the role of a white-collar businessman who mysteriously wakes up in an open-air prison cell containing only an old grist mill.

It’s incredible to consider that when the 37th South by Southwest Film Festival kicks off on March 10, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” will be just two days away from potentially winning a slew of Oscars one year removed from its own premiere in Austin. The A24 multiverse indie, nominated for a total of 11 Academy Awards, is currently leading our combined odds for Best Picture, Director (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert), Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan) and Editing (Paul Rogers).
“To Leslie,” the alcoholism drama about a single mom from West Texas starring Best Actress nominee Andrea Riseborough, also began its, albeit much quieter, road to the Oscars at the festival a year ago. But don’t think SXSW’s awards are any sort of harbinger, as the Narrative Feature Prize went to “I Love My Dad,” a dark comedy starring Patton Oswalt as a father who catfishes his son.

After starring in the comedy Vacation Friends and its upcoming sequel Honeymoon Friends for the Hulu streaming service, Lil Rel Howery has taken the lead into another Hulu Original: the sci-fi horror movie The Mill. It’s said that The Mill is largely a one-man show, but Scoot McNairy (Monsters), Pat Healy (Station 19) and Karen Obilom (House Party) are also in the cast.
Forced to work as a beast of burden to stay alive, he must find a way to escape before the birth of his child. An image of Howery’s character in the cell can be seen at the bottom of this article,...

The Casting Society of America’s annual Artios Awards, which recognize superior achievement in the casting of film, TV and theater projects, has announced the nominees for its film categories, which range from 200 million blockbusters to low-and-micro budget titles.
Anticipated Oscar darlings such as “Elvis,” “Tar,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “The Fabelmans” and “Glass Onion” are present along with juggernauts “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “The Batman.” “Top Gun: Maverick” is strangely absent.
But the real surprises are the smaller titles that have gotten little awards attention in races so far such as “Bros,” “Emily the Criminal,” “Armageddon Time” and “Spoiler Alert,” along with streaming titles such as AppleTV+’s “Cha Cha Real Smooth” and “Causeway,” Netflix’s “Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical” and “White Noise,” and Amazon’s “Emergency” and “Catherine Called Birdy” among them.

In recent years, the major Hollywood studios have been taking fewer chances on straight-up comedies, which is a bit of a bummer. The days of movies like "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy," "Superbad," "Bridesmaids," and "The Hangover" making bank at the box office are behind us, and many comedies have been relegated to streaming services unless they happen to offer cross-genre laughs mixed with sci-fi, action, or horror. In fact, most of the highest-grossing comedies overall are animated movies geared toward the whole family. But many of the best comedies dabble in the naughtier side of humor and skew away from pleasing parents and their kids.
When it comes to 2022, many of the best comedies leaned toward adult laughs, but there are a few titles that managed to be quite clever without venturing into the realm of raunchier fare. Whether it's a boxy makeshift robot rebelling against his reclusive creator,...

Patton Oswalt is a talented guy. He’s a terrific actor, a very funny man, and an absolutely kind fellow. Which is why his performance in the wonderfully awkward new comedy, I Love My Dad, is so bonkers. The film is written, directed, and stars James Morosini, and it’s a charmer. In it, Oswalt portrays a father trying to reconnect with his son in the oddest of ways. It’s funny, moving, and both Oswalt and Morosini are terrific. It’s a bold film, yet it never fails to have a little heart. James made something special with this one.
We recently had the pleasure of speaking with Mr. Patton Oswalt himself. It’s always a joy to talk to this man for a number of reasons. And frankly, this film was a great one to do. He opened up about playing a very imperfect dad. He discussed what...

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Elvis (Baz Luhrmann)
Few filmmakers embrace artistic dichotomy like Baz Luhrmann. The Australian writer-director known for epic, ornate, long-gestating projects has become synonymous with both extravagant innovation and chaotic fluff. He is a walking, talking, directing state of creative contrast. “Six films into his career” might make it seem like he’s a relative newcomer, but Luhrmann’s been helming giant features since his 1996 tropical Ed Hardy rendition of Romeo + Juliet, which pales in scintillation to Elvis. – Luke H. (full review)
Where to Stream: VOD
I Love My Dad (James Morosini)
Inspired by actual events, I Love My Dad contains a cringe-worthy premise that should easily fall apart, as Franklin (James Morosini), a young-ish man, should have grown up with an awareness of the term “catfishing.

Cringe comedy is a tough genre to crack. If you go too far, you can make an audience lose interest and not laugh at the absurdity. But if you do it just right, such as in the new film, “I Love My Dad,” you can bring audiences along on a ride that will make them laugh, possibly cry, and definitely feel a bit uncomfortable, but in the best possible way. And in this episode of The Playlist Podcast, I have a recent interview I conducted with actor Patton Oswalt and actor-writer-director James Morosini, from the film, “I Love My Dad,” and we talk about that tightrope walk that is cringe comedy.

Patton Oswalt has several modes: There’s the affable, warts-and-all comedian who has been performing onstage for decades, the comedic performer with dramatic chops known for everything from “Ratatouille” to “Young Adult,” and a comic book junkie who reads as much as he writes for the form.
These days, all those instincts are on display. This week, Oswalt stars in “I Love My Dad,” the sophomore effort of writer-director James Morosini, which won SXSW earlier this year. Morosini co-stars as a teenager whose estranged dad (Oswalt) impersonates a woman online to get closer to his son. At the same time, Oswalt can be seen as the Raven in Netflix’s “The Sandman,” and has a new comedy special coming out on the service called “We All Scream” on September 20. In between gigs, he spoke to IndieWire over Zoom about his relationship to movies, fan culture, and the evolving state of comedy.

Sons & Lovers: Morosini Aims for Awkward in Dysfunctional Familial Dilemma
Overbearing and stifling parents have long been a staple of semi-autobiographical storytelling, but director James Morosini gives D.H. Lawrence a run for his incestuous inclined parental dysfunction with the sophomore film I Love My Dad. Like a perverse offshoot from Terms of Endearment (1983), Morosini mines the excessively awkward possibilities of unstable nuclear boundary issues with a dark comedy about catfishing and suicidal tendencies, which may too often wallow in the potential shock value of its material instead of providing any real psychological insight. Still, it’s a conversation starter of a narrative, headlined by a compelling Patton Oswalt as a distressingly selfish estranged father in what’s perhaps the comic’s best onscreen delivery since Jason Reitman’s Young Adult (2011).…...

On paper, the premise for I Love My Dad is not only ambitious but outright cringe. Inspired by a real experience from writer, director and star James Morosini, the film follows a desperate father (Patton Oswalt) who accidentally pulls off the catfish of the century, as he pretends to be someone else online in order to check in and be close to his estranged son Franklin (Morosini).
“I’m going to be honest with you, I didn’t know if this would work until I actually saw it in front of an audience,” Oswalt told The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s West Hollywood premiere on Thursday. “I liked watching it by myself, but it’s not until you get in front of a group of people and [can] listen to people. Yes, they laugh, but then also, [they] kind of grimace and cringe, and...

Filmmaker James Morosini’s new film “I Love My Dad” has an amazing premise: a father creates a fake online profile and finds himself catfishing his son to try and get back into his life. And it’s made only more amazing by the fact that this really happened to Morosini courtesy of his real-life father.
Morosini admits as much upfront at the top of his movie, but in speaking with TheWrap, the actor and director let on that while the specific details might not all be the same, there’s a lot about “I Love My Dad” that is scarily true to his own life.
“It definitely went further than I wish it had,” Morosini said. “Emotionally, the whole movie is very true. This feeling of wanting to get closer to somebody and not being able to. It’s a movie, so you’re trying to make it as...

If an episode of “Seinfeld” got struck by gamma radiation, hulked out and wandered into the world by its tragic, bizarre self, it might look a little like writer-director James Morosini’s “I Love My Dad.”
It’s a film about someone who, for perhaps sympathetic reasons, does an apocalyptically wrong thing and then can’t stop doing it. Because revealing you’re a liar is very hard, and living a horrible lie seems ever so slightly easier.
Patton Oswalt stars as Chuck, a divorced dad who, instead of being part of his son’s life, spends years making excuses for not showing up. We hear a lot of these excuses over the opening credits, but we don’t see the impact it has on his son, Franklin (Morosini), until just after the end of the titles, where we find Franklin in group therapy for people who have attempted to kill themselves.
