And Finally!
davyd-0223724 June 2021
This is the episode where organised crime (those with white faces!) actually get nailed! Perhaps just as well since these days police were supposed to be "clean" and criminals went to jail. In this series, so far, some elements of the criminal world were above the law and behaved accordingly. And Finally, we get to the story where UCOS finally gets its hands on the 1 man they havent, to date, been able to catch. Worth watching if only for the result it brings!

Comedy shows leads to murder solved
scsaxe29 April 2022
The team goes to see a comedian, protestors arrive, Gerry likes the, uh, "not PC" nature of the thing, but the protestors point to a reopened case.

Case is interesting, and has a great resolution, but the episode does feel kind of slow/spread out for whatever reason. Overall results in a good watch and you'll enjoy how the different threads finish up.

Jack has the last laugh

Warning: Spoilers
Pop culture references abound in this episode with references to The Traveling Wilburys, Life on Mars, and Rain Man (this was where Ricky Hanson referred to Brian as Rain Man).

Talking of Ricky, he appears in this episode and gets his just desserts as it's revealed he engaged in incest with his daughter. Oh dear. He finally gets his just desserts for the murder of Jack's wife, and the episode ends with Jack offering reassuring words to his late wife in the backyard memorial.

Great episode.
Sleepin_Dragon14 June 2022
A young woman brings the case of a missing young couple, Sarah and Daniel to Sandra, the case soon leads them to a royal rogue's gallery.

Great episode, this surely ranks as one of the show's best, an outstanding story, with a hugely satisfying ending.

A great cast assembled for this one, David Troughton is wonderful once again, supported by a terrific supporting cast, plenty of familiar faces to see, and enjoy. Absolutely love John Henshaw also, what an interesting character, believable, reminded me of a certain comedian popular in the seventies and eighties.

What I would say, is that it's bit an episode for the casual viewer, you need to have watched several previous, not just from this series, but from its earlier years.

Nice visuals, they're making full use of that stunning Triumph, it's featuring more and more.

This felt like an end of series episode, it had that grand scale vibe.

You'll have laughs, you'll have intrigue, and a few surprises, this was hugely satisfying, 10/10.

We did it

Have always been a big fan of detective/mystery shows from a fairly young age, well since starting secondary school.

'Inspector Morse', 'A Touch of Frost', 'Midsomer Murders' (in its prime), 'Law and Order', 'Inspector George Gently', 'Criminal Minds', 'Murder She Wrote', you name them to name a few. 'New Tricks' has also been a favourite from the start (despite not being the same without the original cast in recent years). Although it can be corny at times (in an endearing sort of way) it has always been perfect for helping me relax in the evenings. Something that was needed during all the hard times endured in school.

"The Last Laugh" is not just one of the best Season 6 episodes and the best of the season since "The War Against Drugs" but it's one of my favourite 'New Tricks' episodes. It's not only because it has an absorbing story that continually keeps one going. "The Last Laugh" also provides closure for a major character and an on-going plot line that one was rooting for to be solved once it was first introduced.

Visually, "The Last Laugh" is slick and stylish as ever. The music is a good fit and the theme song (sung with gusto by none other by Dennis Waterman himself) is one of the catchiest for any detective/mystery show and of any show in the past fifteen years or so.

Writing is intelligent, thought-provoking and classy, while also being very funny and high up in the entertainment value. This is all mixed adeptly with a seriousness without being overly so that it doesn't feel like 'New Tricks'.

A huge part of 'New Tricks' appeal is the chemistry between the four leads and their performances. The chemistry is so easy going and charming with a little tension.

One of the show's biggest delights is Alun Armstrong, achieves a perfect balance of funny comic timing and touching pathos which was maintained all the way up to his final episode. It is also lovely here to see his role in the team and skills appreciated more all the time. James Bolam's Jack is the quietest, most sensible (mostly) and most composed of the team, with a tragic personal life that Bolam portrays very touchingly without any overwrought-ness.

The only woman on the team, Amanda Redman more than holds her own in what is essentially the boss role of the four. Dennis Waterman brings some nice levity without unbalancing things.

Support is very good all round.

In conclusion, wonderful episode and one of the sixth season's best. 10/10 Bethany Cox
