Oh, boy. I have never watched a sitcom that was this lacking in actual comedy! Not a funny moment to be found. What's worse, though, is that it is trying so hard to be funny, and you can spot every moment they are trying to force a laugh out of you... I actually don't mind a laugh track, I grew up with them, and sometimes find them comforting... but when you rely on them, hoping to manipulate your audience into finding something funny, you are failing hard. Addressing the content, the situations are so contrived, unbelievable, and unrelatable! The writers made the mistake, too, of having an ensemble cast of characters who are not connected at all, and only meet for the first time in this pilot. There are a couple of pairs that are acquainted, but otherwise, it's introductions, all around, for everybody. It makes it hard to care about their (I'm assuming) collective journey. This episode gives you nothing to care about, no one to care about... and while it may get better, I strongly doubt I'll revisit to find out! How I Met Your Mother was such a clever show, which was also full of heart, and associating this dreck with it is shameful.
As far as spoilers, this episode was considerably self-limiting, in that it let you know that one of (I think it was) three men you met in this episode will be the father. Why would you do that to yourself, writers? No relationships you present in future, beyond these, will matter now to your audience because we already know it's temporary.
