[Note: With the film finally released in the UK, under the new title of Resurrection of Evil, here’s a re-posting of my review of Havenhurst]
Jackie (Benz), a troubled young woman struggling with addiction, is released from rehab and given a second chance with a new job and a furnished apartment at Havenhurst. Guilt-ridden over the loss of her 8-year-old daughter, Jackie is quickly drawn into the mysteries of Havenhurst, in particular the disappearance of apartment 1006′s previous lost soul, a young woman (Harris) she befriended in rehab who vanished without a trace. Aided by a hardened New York police detective (Stamberg) and a lonely foster child (Shouse) who lives under the sadistic shadow of her caretakers, Jackie must not only battle her inner demons… but the very real ones that live within the walls of Havenhurst.

I am incredibly pleased to announce that one of my favourite giallo of all time (and I say that without a hint of sarcasm or irony – just go back and read my reviews of the film to see that), Tulpa is Finally getting a UK release! High Fliers Films and Jinga Films have this week announced the long awaited UK DVD release of Federico Zampaglione’s sensational neo-giallo horror – which is set to hit UK stores on May 9th 2016.
Italian rock star Federico Zampaglione burst on to the genre scene in 2010 with psychological horror Shadow, which was released by IFC Midnight in North America and Wild Bunch in the UK. Determined to de-throne Dario Argento as the king of Italian horror, Zampaglione quickly followed up with Tulpa, a homage to the aformentioned Il Duce of giallo. The film sees Claudia Gerini (The Passion Of Christ) stars as a successful business...

Shadow
Written by Giacomo Gensini, and Domenico & Federico Zampaglione
Directed by Federico Zampaglione
Italy, 2009
When a film ends and the audience walks out the doors of a movie theater, shuts off their TVs, or switches the channel, there’s a certain reaction that is expected. That reaction can be excitement, anger, derision, joy, and so forth and so on. The gist is that a movie should engender some sort of reaction from the audience. Shadow is the type of film that fails to elicit any type of reaction from the audience. It’s so poorly made that being derisive towards the film serves no point. The proceedings in the film are so bland that there’s nothing to get excited about. Shadow is stupid on a level that doesn’t even allow for anger from the viewer. When one walks away from Shadow no reaction should be present. Without any sort of reaction,...

Italian actress Claudia Gerini is best known to UK audiences for appearances in The Passion of the Christ, Penelope Cruz’s Don’t Move and as a memorable villain in the TV adaptation of Kate Mosse’s Labyrinth. Audiences will soon be able to see her in the mad Italian sex-thriller Tulpa, directed by her husband Federico Zampaglione, whose previous film was the neat little horror, Shadow. A throwback to the classic Italian giallo horror-thrillers of the 1960s and 70s, Tulpa concerns a beautiful banker, Lisa (Gerini) whose life becomes a nightmare when members of the sex club she frequents begin turning up dead.

Tul-pa (from the Tibetan): meaning a magically produced illusion or creation. The concept of a being or object which is created through sheer discipline alone. It is a materialized thought that has taken physical form.
Italian rock star turned director Federico Zampaglione made a splash in 2009 when his first film Shadow played to a packed audience at London’s Frightfest. Returning some three years later, Zampaglione unleashed Tulpa on an eager and willing horror-hungry audience. I originally reviewed Tulpa after the Frightfest screening last August in London and whilst I loved the film for it’s classic giallo trappings and gloriously Ott murders, many attendees felt differently.
In fact, the reaction was so mixed that director Federico Zampaglione went back to the editing room post-screening, trimming some 20 minutes...

Directed by Federico Zampaglione from a script he wrote with Giacomo Gensini, based on a story by veteran Italo-horror scribe Dardano Sacchetti, Tulpa stars Claudia Gerini as Lisa, a businesswoman who leads a secret night life of sexual exploration and experimentation, centered on the titular nightclub. When her lovers start getting brutally killed, she undertakes her own investigation to avoid exposing her carnal activities. Michele Placido and Nuit Arquint (Shadow’s memorable villaing Mortis) co-star; Leonardo Cruciano created the makeup FX, and actress Maria Grazia Cucinotta (whose credits range from The Day Of The Beast to The Rite) was one of the producers.
Tulpa, which we first reported on here, screened last year at London’s FrightFest in not-quite-completed form. “We knew what worked in the genre,” Zampaglione says, “but we were also aware of its shortcomings, and that is why we test-screened a rough cut of the film to an audience at Frightfest.

This years Glasgow Frightfest was filled with many an unscheduled treat, from a silat demonstration by the star of The Raid to a couple of interesting short films. One of the most exciting and (at least for me) most anticipated “extra” at the event was a seven minute preview of director Federico Zampagiione’s latest film Tulpa, which was said to be a return to the true roots of Italian giallo. I was honoured to be able to chat to Federico before the screening to get a little insight into just what we can expect from the film and how the director felt about previewing it at Frightfest.
I remember seeing Shadow a few years back at Frightfest and being completely blown away…
Federico: It was three and a half years ago man! Times goes by eh?
Well now you’re back at Frightfest once again with your latest film: a giallo called Tulpa.

Writer, producer, director and Italian rock star Federico Zampaglione launched his critically and audience acclaimed debut horror feature Shadow in 2009. Now, "The Italian Rob Zombie" is prepping to shoot his follow-up, the supernatural giallo shocker Tulpa. Retiring his guitar for a few months after tirelessly touring with the chart-topping band Tiromancino, Zampaglione starts principal production on Tulpa in March for six weeks on location in Rome, Italy, and Brussels, Belgium.
He said, “I must concentrate on Tulpa as it is going to be a hard movie to make. It’s going to be a career-defining movie for me too, no question. Shadow was well received but it was just the first step. All eyes will be on Tulpa to see if I can actually progress and that it wasn’t just a lucky accident. Let the silly season commence with this expensive comic-book movie, which takes full advantage of its second-tier superhero, free casting rein and Asgard-sized budget to deliver some premium disposable spectacle. Source: FilmShaft - Exclusive: “Shadow” Director Federico Zampaglione Interviewed
Federico Zampaglione makes his directorial debut with a dark and mysterious new horror film which is being released in the UK through the new - and very exciting - FrightFest Features label. Shadow is the story of an American soldier being chased through the Italian Alps after a run in with some hunters whilst on a biking holiday. The film takes a detour into ever-increasing horror and strangeness.
Zampaglione recently chatted to FilmShaft about making his feature film and hooking up with FrightFest Features. Shadow marks a horror title from a promising Italian director whose next film sees him teaming up with the legendary screenwriter Dardano Sachetti.
FilmShaft: How did you get involved with FrightFest Features?
Fz: I met the FrightFest team in Cannes, showed them my film and they liked it. So they asked me to screen it at FrightFest 2009, as the World Premiere.

Shadow is the English language debut of Italian director (and rock star) Federico Zampaglione and first out of the block from the FrightFest Features label. Jake Muxworthy stars as David, a soldier recently returned from the Iraq war who has decided to take himself on a lone biking holiday after getting a tip from a friend about a cycling route called "The Shadow."
We meet him at a little bar high in the Italian Alps, where an obligatory beautiful woman, Angeline (Karina Testa), sits alone. All well and good so far. Then in walks two gents. And by gents I mean the kind of guys you wouldn't want to meet on a dark night. We learn that they're here to hunt and are duly warned off by the bar keeper. It's a recipe for trouble, they make crude remarks to the lady and our hero steps in.

First time Italian director of the well received (English language) torture horror ‘Shadow’, Federico Zampaglione, has announced that shooting on his new film will begin shortly. Titled Tulpa, it will be, according to Zampaglione, “a very bloody and tense Italian thriller with some supernatural elements”. Tulpa is written by the legendary screenwriter Dardano Sacchetti, who has worked with all the great Italian horror masters including Fulci, Bava and Argento. Federico explains the title: “Tulpa is a term which comes from Tibetan Buddhism. It’s a kind of projection of your metaphysical part, which, through meditation, can become real. But sometimes tulpa goes the wrong way and turns unto an evil presence... which then wants to kill its creator. It's mysterious and creepy stuff.” The film will be shot on locations in Rome and North Africa. It’s waaaay to early for any media to do with the new production, but...

While his debut creepshow, Shadow, may have been seriously lacking in the story department, it most definitely had visual chops on par with some of Italy’s finest horror filmmakers. Now director Federico Zampaglione steps up to the plate once more with the newly announced Tulpa!
With shooting apparently set to take off very soon, Tulpa will be, according to Zampaglione (pictured right), “a very bloody and tense Italian thriller with some supernatural elements. 'Tulpa' is a term which comes from Tibetan Buddhism. It’s a kind of projection of your metaphysical part, which, through meditation, can become real. But sometimes Tulpa goes the wrong way and turns into an evil presence... which then wants to kill its creator. It's mysterious and creepy stuff”.

Shadow director Federico Zampaglione has announced that shooting on his new film will begin shortly. Entitled Tulpa, it will be, according to Zampaglione:

Dardano Sachetti is a giallo and horror legend. He worked with Mario Bava, Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci on some of their most famous movies. Now the Italian legend has teamed up with an emerging horror director, Federico Zampaglione, to work on a new flick!
We received the press release earlier today and for genre fans this is pretty exciting news. No wonder Zampaglione was keeping his cards close to his chest when we interviewed him recently about his next project.

I feel have to applaud any filmmaker who goes out and confronts the daunting task of making a movie independently. So in that case I should applaud director Federico Zampaglione for making his horror flick Shadow without the secure hand of a studio pulling him along through the many facets of production. Now as for the film itself, I don’t think I ever felt like clapping my hands.
In the film, a young war veteran, David, is haunted by the horrors he witnessed in Iraq. For some much needed R&R after his tour of duty, he goes mountain biking in Italy. He meets a beautiful Italian woman named Angeline, who is also there to enjoy the lush mountain scenery. Together they meet two volatile hunters. Those two hunters then begin to hunt David and Angeline, before all four of them become prey to a scrawny and hairless lunatic...

As Shadow begins, we're introduced to a normal young man who is fresh out of the war, and more than happy to trek across the rugged wilderness on his beloved bicycle. As is likely to happen in films best described as "horror / thrillers," our hero bumps into a sleazy pair of backwoods slobs who quickly decide they want him dead. The poor kid then hightails it deeper into the wilderness, somehow bumps into a pretty woman who is camping all by herself. Those two then (somehow) run afoul of the two greasy jerks from earlier, and then we're looking at a wilderness/chase thriller that's pretty darn predictable. Hold that thought. Everything I just described about Federico Zampaglione's Shadow is a...

Shadow Movie PosterFormer Rockstar Frederico Zampaglione's Shadow now has a North American trailer for horror fans. This newest clip, which is quite different from the previous seen (here), shows a couple on a mountain bike adventure in the Alps. Enter in some degenerate hunters and Nazi experiments, then there is a great deal of conflict to be had. This is a film that this reviewer has been looking forward to and apparently this film is available now on IFC Film's Midnight feature (Twitch). However, this cannot be confirmed by the enigma that is also know as the IFC Film website. The trailer is below.
A synopsis for Shadow here:
"A soldier returning from a tour of duty in Iraq goes on a mountain bike adventure in the Alps to forget his battle weary past. In the woods he meets a pretty young stranger who tells him about a local myth concerning a nazi experiment camp.
