Hi. This is just me venting about why i hope victor chooses rahim. Sorry in advance for the typos.
I am operating under the assumption that most of this show's fans are quite young, so they don't understand that sometimes relationships just... end. Like, yeah victor and benji were nice together, but like most high school relationships, it probably was never gonna last. Same thing with felix and lake (very glad he chose pilar btw). Of course, i'm not saying their love wasn't a beautiful thing, but their differences are just too big to ignore. Namely, the fact that benji will never really understand what it's like for victor, a man of color and religious background, to come out to his parents. That's a struggle that rahim can actually identify with.
Seeing benji in episode 8 just brush that off really upset me because, as a man of color and religious background myself, i understand how difficult it must be for victor to judge his family (especially his mother) for their reaction. And i don't want to say that having that shared experience makes victor and rahim more compatible, but it does make them more... alike. Obviously i can't really blame benji either, he didn't choose to be white, but the lack of empathy or even an attempt at understanding victor's struggles, once again, upset me.
But, more than that, I liked watching victor and rahim's conversations! Conversations we see way too little of on tv. The way they speak about masculinity, race, friendship, acceptance... in the two episodes they spent together victor and rahim touched me in a way that victor and benji hadn't in nearly two seasons. There, i said it. And i know this might get some people unnecessarily angry, but romantic relationships between two men of color on tv are practically unheard of. Like, i seriously couldn't name another if i tried. And this is the perfect opportunity to change that.
For a show that champions representation and diversity, reducing rahim down to a conflict tool for victor and benji would be beyond lousy, and i hope they make the right choice and let him end up with victor. That's all i got. If you read all this... thanks. If you disagree, small reminder that there are ways to express that without being mean. Have a nice day :)
