Warning: Spoilers
After the surprising death of protagonist Nick Cutter at the end of the previous episode the team are repairing the ARC; Jenny has been given Cutter's old job and Connor believes that his device to lock anomalies is almost ready to use. Early on we learn that Christine Johnson, Lester's boss, is doing something with the Predators. More importantly journalist Mick Harper steals a portable anomaly detector from Jenny's car so he, his boss and a team of reporters manage to be first on the scene when the next anomaly opens in an aircraft hangar; to make matters worse he tricks Jenny and Connor into entering the wrong building and locks then in. Eventually they are released by ex-policeman Danny Quinn but by now there is a Giganotosaurus running around the airfield! At least Connors device seems to work.

I was half expecting a bit of a cop out opening whereby Cutter had somehow survived after all but relieved that wasn't the case, even though he was one of the best characters in the show. While only a relatively minor part of the story it was nice to see Christine's plot line develop a bit with a major revelation. The main story was rather fun, even if it is hard to believe the journalists would behave the way they did… at least their behaviour made their ultimate fate rather enjoyable. The giant dinosaur they have to deal with was suitably menacing; it was fun seeing it run around the airfield better known as the 'Top Gear Test Track'… sadly there was no sign of The Stig! Jason Flemyng's return as Danny Quinn was welcome although his presence at the scene wasn't fully explained; no doubt he will be joining the team in the near future. Overall a decent episode which had good standalone elements as well as advancing the main plot.

The Sun Always Shines in Primeval Park

After watching this episode the only thing I'm sure is that it's one of the worst Primeval episodes so far. Now Nick is out of the picture I was really wondering how Impossible Pictures would manage to run the show but in my opinion they didn't succeed. First the creature was really disappointing. It's like if they traded Nick for it. For the budget the visual effects weren't bad but a CGI creature running in bright day light when you don't have Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) resources to back it up, it just doesn't work. Because of it all defaults showed up : Bad lightning like in King Kong (2005), incrustations with the real scenes (Specially the one with Connor), flat textures… The pill was even harder to swallow considering there were some obvious references to blockbusters. Moreover like for the 15th episode filming some scenes at night would have been far much more scary and hidden most CGI mistakes. There're reasons why films like Jurassic Park and Godzilla had most of their action scenes occurring at night and under a pouring rain. In fact reviewing King Kong it was my main complain, because Skull Island looked like a Disneyland attraction.

But beside these irritating bad decisions there were still good moments. For example the beginning was very emotional and you could feel how sad they all were. Connor crying over the artifact, Jennifer hanging around… In fact I don't know if it's the knight within that spoke but I enjoyed her short scene with the creature. How can you resist a damsel in distress ? Moreover it was interesting to see her struggle all along trying to control things, take the right decisions, find the strength to enter the creature lair… His interaction with the dark rider was specially enjoyable and I think he's a great addition to the cast. However the character development wasn't flawless and I didn't see the point of the whole Abby and Connor side story. They should have focused on other plots instead because it just felt they were forced to include the scenes when we don't really care anymore about them. What about Connor's new invention ? He came up with it after falling from his bed ? The reporter was also a bit annoying because I think journalists aren't all bad. I mean there's nothing wrong with uncovering the truth. However denouncing journalism abuses was probably the strongest argument of the episode.

As for the anomaly arc some interesting ideas were developed. First now it's obvious Christine and James don't really work together when she's supposed to be her boss. So like Helen it seems she has her own agenda. Her first scene with the soldier was great and reminded me of Independence Day. The phone call one was also good and quite intriguing. For example I can see Christine and Helen working together, or at least on the surface. And what about Sarah's new mission ? However Captain Becker is the only new character that hasn't grown up on me yet. I think he lacks charisma and made me realize how good Stephen was. They shouldn't have replaced the hunter by a boyscout.

So overall I was disappointed by this episode. I already mentioned it and I know Primeval is family-friendly but it doesn't work anymore for me. I'm a huge fan of films like Mimic so for me a scary CGI creature rendered in bright day light is a waste of money. But hopefully there're still some trump cards to use, like the new story elements and characters. Moreover the previews revealed some interesting upcoming events so for now I think I'll stick around a little longer
