Ambitious, Long and Possibly Too Tedious for a "Making of"
charlytully22 February 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I recently added this title to IMDb's other million-plus offerings because I have done some random surfing and seen the thousands of 3-minute shorts, student projects with questionable availability, and much briefer supplements for less widely circulated direct-to-video fare which appear here. The feature RINNE itself has a fairly broad audience due to its inclusion in the initial "After Dark Horrorfest: 8 films to die for" from Lionsgate, an octet of films shown in hundreds of theaters across the U.S., and subsequently available from most movie outlets. At nearly an hour, this "making of" (in Japanese, with English subtitles available) is about the longest such DVD feature I've seen. However, while I rated the reincarnation-themed movie-within-a-movie RINNE "7" of 10 for its seeming originality, among other things, I gave its "making of" a neutral "5" of 10 because I think it is of primary interest to those who 1)speak Japanese, or 2)think the girls in the feature are "hot," and wish to see them in a more "real" situation. While the uncredited direction\editing seems in mindless lock-step with the feature's April 29 through June 26, 2005 shooting schedule, the equally uncredited hard-driving musical score is more interesting than that of the feature. I know from the "message board" entries for RINNE that lots of people have given this flick perhaps too much thought, so these folks at least should have the opportunity to unwind and discuss cast birthday parties, fun cultural differences (such as a shooting schedule longer than the seven North American-made "horrorfest" films PUT TOGETHER), and whether this "making of" actually added to their appreciation of the Chicks of Rinne!
