Great opener with stellar cinematography. Not one of HDM's best, but provides enough thrills and excitement for the journey ahead.

Will is excellent in this one, and James McAvoy steals the show. Glad to see him back in a prominent role after not being all that much present last season.

Father Gomez reveals himself to be quite a new addition. You see he is twisted from the jump. The Authority storyline is interesting, and you don't know whether you can trust Mrs. Coulter or not.

It's taking shape slowly. Lyra is still as likable as ever, but doesn't get to do much. The new angels and the commander keep our interest. Oh, and Iorek is here ! Wowza.

The Enchanted Sleeper
Prismark1019 December 2022
It was a good job that the beginning of the third series had an extended recap. It has been two years since the final episode of series two was broadcast.

The opening lays bare that author Philip Pullman's novels is a critique of organised novels.

Two cast out angels appear before Will but he initially rebuffs them. They see the power of his knife and so does Lorek

Meanwhile the Magisterium has stepped up their efforts to locale Lyra. Father Gomez, a zealous member has been given the task.

The opening episode has everyone on a search. Will is looking for Lyra but finds Lorek, who himself is searching for a polar bear being held captive.

Lord Asriel wants to team up with Ogunwe to find allies for the prospective battle with Cardinal MacPhail's troops.

The opening episode wants to set up something epic for the final series. It looks amazing.

Bad Wolf productions have to throw down the gauntlet when it comes to visuals. Since the previous episode of His Dark Materials was broadcast. They won the contract to co-produce Doctor Who with the BBC plus an injection of Disney money. So they want to go out on a high with the third series.

Recruiting for the War

Warning: Spoilers
Lord Asriel is preparing a war against the Authority, who rules the Kingdom of Heaven in many worlds. Will is seeking out Lyra, who was abducted and drugged by her mother, and sleeping in a house by the coast. Will is followed through the worlds by two gay angels, the Caucasian Baruch and the Black Balthamos. They want him to join Asriel with his subtle knife, but Will tells to them that he may go after finding Lyra, and the angels tell him that they will help him to find her. Meanwhile, Asriel tries to recruit Commander Ogunwe and his soldiers, but the military rebel is reluctant to accept the invitation.

"The Enchanted Sleeper" is the first episode of the Third Season of "His Dark Materials". The best part is the return of Iorek Byrnison. I did not read the novel by Philip Pullman, but it is strange to see the behavior of the two angels. I question whether it is a creation of the author. Further, it is strange to work in a long series with kids turning teenagers: Dafne Keen is no longer a girl, but a teenager, and does not seem to be suitable to perform the girl Lyra. My vote is six.

Amazing opening
victoriajayne-3328014 December 2022
I was hooked from the very start with a fabulously OTT opening but the appearance on screen of my favourite gay angels in literature was utterly pleasing ..plus it's ok that Will and Lyra are all grown up given the lapse in filming time since series 2 ....Ruth Wilson as ever steals ever scene she is in even from the cgi daemons ..and the Oh so glamorous witches and leather clad arsey dragonfly

any battle against dogma and fascism gets my vote but the series has been made so beautifully and cast so well it is visually stunning as well as a script that respects the books but goes off piste where deemed necessary

A treat.
