When two British-born powerhouses get together — Idris Elba, an actor-director-producer of Sierra Leone, Creole and Ghanaian descent, and Nigerian-rooted Mo Abudu, largely considered the go-between for African content to the rest of the world — they have a powerful chemistry. Remarkably, though, they’ve never made anything together.
This is about to change. In March, the two quietly announced they would join forces to empower and uplift talent from Africa through their respective companies: Elba’s Green Door Pictures and Abudu’s EbonyLife TV. It’s a subject of shared passion for both. Throughout Elba’s prolific career, he’s continued to be involved in stories that are related to the African diaspora, from his early work on TV drama Sometimes in April, or The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, to his upcoming untitled Ghana project, which he will direct and star in. He’s long championed under-heard voices, and in...

Juneteenth is still not recognized as a federal holiday, but it is recognized by several states — and this year, many companies are declaring it a paid holiday in light of the Black Lives Matter movement and national protesting that has taken place following the death of George Floyd.
This special programming celebrates black history and educates viewers on the history of the black experience in the United States.

We almost got it! Nine years after Lisa Kudrow's mockumentary reality show debuted on HBO, the network is considering a second season. Deadline reports that Kudrow and co-creator Michael Patrick King are currently in talks to discuss a Comeback limited series. As great as it would be to find out where Valerie Cherish ended up ten years later (Oscar? Rhobh? Both? Both.), it's even more exciting to think that new episodes of Comeback could potentially open the door to the resurrection of any cancelled HBO show. Hung, Carnivale, The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency: you name it, it could return. If The Comeback season two is a success, we might one day be watching new episodes of John from Cincinnati and liking it.

Though cancelled in December after three seasons, HBO comedy "Bored to Death" is under consideration to get a TV movie continuation.
An HBO rep confirms to The Live Feed that early discussions are under way to revive the property as a feature. Co-star Ted Danson first revealed the news at the Monte Carlo Television Festival, claiming that "there was a good chance of a 90-minute film".
Danson co-starred in the series with Jason Schwartzman and Zach Galifianakis which scored ratings of over 1 million during its first two seasons, numbers that had plunged to 240,000 during its most recent season.
Fans though should not get their hopes up. Talks have previously taken place for TV movie follow-ups to other HBO shows like "Carnivale," "Deadwood" and "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" - none of which have come to fruition.

Jeez, Game of Thrones season 2 casting news is just hemorrhaging out, isn't it? Earlier today, we posted news that Ralph Ineson had been cast as Dagmer Cleftjaw. There ain't no rest for the people who cover Game of Thrones news, though, because another casting decision has broken, less than an hour later.
This time it's the role of Salladhor Saan that's been filled. The pirate ally of Davos Seaworth (Liam Cunningham) will be played by Lucian Msamati, Entertainment Weekly is reporting. Msamati joins the twenty-odd new faces being assembled for the season. The character Saan is a mercenary pirate who is pledged to the self-proclaimed Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane). The role will be recurring throughout the series.

By tradition, we don't do our Top Ten Lists of the Year until the first week of the new year (giving us more time to catch those Christmas releases), but AFI has come out with its Top Ten of 2009, for both television and the big screen. Their top ten movies of the year gives me some pause -- either it's a mediocre list, or 2009 really didn't have better offerings, although to be honest, I did like all the ones listed below that I've seen, and I won't quibble with them being on a top ten list; some of them (The Hangover), just wouldn't be on my top ten list. I am glad to see some love for Sugar, though -- a very under appreciated gem. The inclusion of The Hurt Locker, in addition to its success in some of the other movie awards this week from city-wide film critics societies,...

Yesterday, American Film Institute announced their official selections for the programs of the year for 2009. I'm happy that the esteemed board--which included The Chicago Tribune's Maureen Ryan, TV Guide Magazine's Matt Roush, Variety's Brian Lowry, actor Cch Pounder (The Shield), and writer/producer David Milch (Deadwood)--chose to recognize several series that don't get nearly as much love from critics and audiences as they should. Along with noteworthy freshman series like Modern Family and Glee (both of which I expected would end up on the list) and the always sterling Mad Men, the panel selected such unexpected entries like HBO's lyrical mystery series No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, Starz's breakout ensemble comedy Party Down, HBO's groundbreaking (and sadly often overlooked) drama series Big Love (which had its best season yet earlier this year), saved-from-cancellation drama Friday Night Lights, and Showtime's sensational medical-based dark comedy Nurse Jackie. HBO, not unexpectedly, walked away...

The American Film Institute has announced its list of Top 10 movies and TV shows of 2009, offering up some surprises in the process. Then again, few are disputing that The Hangover may be one of the funniest movies ever made. With that in mind, AFI honors on the big screen went to Coraline, The Hangover, The Hurt Locker, The Messenger, Precious, A Serious Man, A Single Man, Sugar, Up and Up in the Air. Conspicuously absent from the list was Titanic director James Cameron's long-awaited Avatar - the most expensive movie ever made, though its studio denies the $500-million price...

This year's Top 10 movies and TV shows selected by the American Film Institute (AFI) have been announced with "The Hurt Locker" and "True Blood" included within the list. The organization will honor the creative ensembles at a gala held at Los Angeles' Four Seasons Hotel on January 15 as part of the 10th Annual AFI Awards.
AFI made the list based on "most outstanding achievements in film and television". Comprised of 13 scholars, film artists, critics and AFI trustees, the judges include director Norman Jewison, Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black and president of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences John Shaffner.
"The Hurt Locker" in particular is already a winner on Los Angeles Critics Awards (Laca), National Board of Review and New York Film Critics Online. In Laca, the Iraq war drama won both Best Movie and Best Director for Kathryn Bigelow. "Up in the Air" which is also included in AFI's...

"The Hurt Locker" has done it again.
The drama about soldiers in Iraq who diffuse bombs landed on the American Film Institute's Top 10 movies of the year the same day that it was named the top film of 2009 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.
Among the other dramas that made the cut were "The Messenger," "Precious," "A Serious Man," "A Single Man" and "Sugar." There was still love for comedies like "Up in the Air" and "The Hangover," as well as family films like "Up" and "Coraline."
The small screen also got honors: "The Big Bang Theory," "Big Love," "Friday Night Lights," "Glee," "Mad Men," "Modern Family," "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency," "Nurse Jackie," "Party Down" and "True Blood."

Big Love is among the outstanding programs of the year. Or at least according to the American Film Institute, which listed the HBO drama in the same league as critical favorite Mad Men and newcomer comedy The Big Bang Theory.
The polygamy-themed drama, which returns for its forth season this January, is part of the strong HBO presence on the list, including Botswana-set The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency and vampire series True Blood. The other shows on the list are Friday Night Lights, Glee, Modern Family, Nurse Jackie, and Party Down. Critics darling Mad Men is the only repeater on the list.

Emily Blunt and Penelope Cruz will be competing against each other for 2009 Satellite Awards. On Sunday, November 29, the International Press Academy announced the nominees for its 14th annual awards, unraveling that the two Hollywood big names are nominated in two same categories.
Blunt and Cruz are up for Best Actress in Drama and Best Supporting Actress. Blunt received the Best Actress nod for her performance as Queen Victoria in "The Young Victoria", and Cruz got the nom for "Broken Embraces". As for the supporting actress category, Blunt nailed it through her "Sunshine Cleaning" performance, and Cruz nabbed it due to her role in "Nine".

"Glee" is shining in the nomination list released by Satellite Awards for its 14th year. The new musical by Fox makes the entry in every TV category possible through the show itself as well as the actors. The nominees were selected through voting by International Press Academy's members which included more than 100 entertainment journalists.
Jane Lynch, Chris Colfer, Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison represent the show for the categories of Supporting Actress, Supporting Actor, Lead Actress and Lead Actor in Comedy or Musical respectively. The show itself is being put under Television Series, Comedy or Musical.
In another genre, "Grey Gardens" is showing a domination by taking in nominations for Motion Picture Made for Television. The TV movie by HBO has the chance to win through its leading cast, Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange who in fact are pitted against each other in the best actress for miniseries or made for TV category.

The Human Condition (Criterion) Masaki Kobayashi’s epic (574 minutes) adaptation of Junpei Gomikawa’s six-volume novel was originally made and released as three separate films (1959-61), and is rightfully regarded as a landmark of Japanese cinema. Candide-like story of naïve, good-hearted Kaiji (Japanese superstar Tatsuya Nakadai) from labor camp supervisor, to Imperial Army solider, to Soviet Pow, and Kaiji’s struggle to maintain his humanity throughout. Unfolds with the mastery of a great novel, beautifully-shot, and a stunning example of cinematic mastery on the part of its makers. Four-disc set bonuses include: Interview with Kobayashi; Interview with Nakadai; Featurette; Trailer; Essay by critic Philip Kemp. Widescreen. Dolby 3.0 surround.
State Of Play (Universal) Russell Crowe stars as a veteran Washington D.C. political reporter investigating the murder of an aide to a rising congressional star (Ben Affleck), who also happens to be an old friend.

The CinemaSpy fall television preview concludes with a look at the schedules for the rest of the cable networks. The cable broadcasters have typically left the traditional fall season to the main networks, and this year is no exception, so there's less to skip here because there's less to consider.
Please keep in mind that the premiere dates stated here are subject to change. Make sure you check your local listings for those shows you're most excited about.

Mad Men actually started in the summer — and we're nearly half-way through the third season — but it stretches far enough into the fall that I think it warrants a mention here. If for no other reason than because it's an example of great television. It's not for everybody, but that's true of most shows that air on cable. That's why they air on cable. Premiere: Aug. 16, airing on Sundays.

HBO tops the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation's third annual Network Responsibility Index, a study that evaluates the quantity, quality and diversity of images of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people on television.
Among the five broadcast and 10 of the highest-rated cable networks, once again none earned the top "excellent" ranking, with five, including NBC and CBS, getting a "failing" grade.
Four nets were rated "good," led by HBO with 42% representation of Lgbt characters, a 16% increase from last year. Virtually all non-sports original HBO series included Lgbt content, with shows such as "True Blood" and "The No. 1 Lades Detective Agency" lauded for featuring "complex and authentic Lgbt characters from diverse backgrounds."
Also singled out in the report is ABC's drama "Brothers & Sisters," which features three regular gay characters, as well as the network's "Grey's Anatomy," which has a bisexual woman among the leads.

It's a good day for funny people, especially if your name is Tina Fey or Seth MacFarlane.
Fey's series, 30 Rock, was handed 22 Emmy nominations this morning, which stands as a record for a comedy series. She and Alec Baldwin were also nominated for acting awards. Plus, for the first time some of the other actors on NBC's laffer were recognized. Jane Krakowski, Jack McBrayer and Tracy Morgan all picked up supporting nominations.
MacFarlane's Family Guy was also nominated for best comedy series, the first time an animated show has cracked that category since The Flintstones in 1961. Two years ago MacFarlane decided to pull his show from contention in the animated series category to have it considered for best comedy.
Mad Men, the drama about the advertising world in the sixties, picked up 16 nominations in the drama categories, including a best actor nod for Jon Hamm. Hamm is also nominated as...

Since the Emmys have ditched the judging panels to determine nominees, letting the lineups be chosen strictly by an outright popular balloting of the TV academy's acting branch, that means the outcome should be more predictable than usual. Expect last year's champ Glenn Close ("Damages") and 2007 winner, 2008 nominee and double Oscar victor Sally Field ("Brothers & Sisters") to return. Ditto perennial nominees Mariska Hargitay ("Law & Order: Svu") and Kyra Sedgwick ("The Closer"). Voters usually drive a stake through the Emmy hopes of the stars of vampire shows (poor "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" star Sarah Michelle Gellar was never nommed despite shrieks of outrage from every TV critic), but Anna Paquin ("True Blood") has two pluses: being on HBO and owning an Oscar ("The Piano"). Past Oscar champ for the same film, Holly Hunter, was nominated last year for "Saving Grace," so she'll probably be back. That leaves one more slot open,...

The No. Ladies' Detective Agency is to television as The Secret Life of Bees is to literature: it's palatable, and great for a beach vacation, but ultimately not stimulating enough to stick in your memory. The six-episode series, which ran first on the BBC and then on HBO, is based on Alexander McCall Smith's ten-novel series of the same name. Precious Ramotswe (Jill Scott) moves to Gaborone, Botswana's capital, to open the country's first-ever female-run detective agency. The show winds through Precious's detective cases -- which range from spying on a client's wife to investigating a stolen car -- and her relationships with her assistant, Grace Makutsi (Anika Noni Rose) and her suitor, mechanic Jlb Matekoni (Lucian Msamati). The series is pleasant to watch. It features a beautiful Botswana landscape and lilting music and accents. But the combined effect was as...

Best.Gay.Week.Ever? I don't think so. First, there was that Amazon.com kerfuffle where the online merchant began treating almost all books dealing with gay subject matter (even purely academic ones) as adult content — excluding many very worthy titles from their sales rankings system and standard searches.

But then company spokespersons variously blamed it on a computer "glitch," and a "ham-fisted cataloging error" and made assurances they were working on a fix.
