A solid conclusion, perhaps not the ending I'd hoped for.
Sleepin_Dragon25 January 2022
Overall, I have loved this series, this concluding episode though, didn't feel very satisfying. This excellent series deserved something a little bit better.

Not a lot is explained, so many things are left in mid air, this felt more like a prequel to a second series, which seems a certainty.

Unfortunately the horror vibe has fizzled out for the most part, and we're given something that's just a little weird, perhaps a bit surreal. It very nearly works.

On the plus side, we get one or two good revelations, we get to learn a little bit about where Melody is, and finally we get the meeting we've been waiting for. Top notch acting and visuals once again.

Maybe it'll be better on a second viewing, but compared to the rest of the series, this was off the pace, 6/10.

While this series builds an incredible amount of suspense and mystery throughout, it ends much like the sum of its lofty ambitions. Discombobulated.

Netflix shows RARELY catch my eye, but after reading the synopsis of this and looking it up seeing Wan/Benson/Moorhead involved, I had to invest myself.

This series swings for the fences with ominous subject matter that's all over the place and delivers well on mind bending ideals. Often times it can drag on but usually has enough surreal enigma to keep your attention. Unfortunately it shares the same pattern as most series these days. A culmination of 30 seconds of visual brilliance at the end of each episode to keep you on edge and watch the next. This finale is no different and ultimately ends in a middling and head scratching way without a true satisfying conclusion to the convoluted yet imaginative story. I will say the eeriness is unlike anything I've seen in awhile for a series though. Maybe they want to keep people hoping for another season but loose ends could've been tied up better.

Season 1 Review: Archive 81 takes you back & forth - a great horror story...
joebloggscity8 February 2022
Archive 81 is a very curious entry into the box set world, and I was mostly hooked on this horror TV series.

The premise is very interesting taking the now much cliched 'found/lost footage' story and making it all fresh. Our lead is a video tape restorer and has been given a lucrative contract to restore some sensitive videos found in a fire from long back, only to find that there's more than meets the eye!

What we have actually is 2-3 separate narratives which flow through the show that we have to follow, and each is very intriguing. You really are kept on your tenterhooks. It crosses so many lines, as we watch the psychological horror build with cults and cross time travel! There's detective & investigation aspects too, which you are yourself trying to figure it all out too.

None of the actors are well known (not to me anyhow) but you'd think they were mostly experienced as they capture so much so well, and you feel for them. The direction & cinematography is great and thankfully they are able to keep the tension despite it being spread over 8 hours of shows.

I'm trying to not say too much, but really this is a very cerebral show, far better than the usual stuff that is getting churned across the streaming sites. A lot of kudos to Netflix for giving this the green light.

I really recommend you to give it a chance, it's a genuinely great modern horror series.

Blah ending

Warning: Spoilers
Not sure how the ending could have been done to satisfy those who watched the whole series but this ending was not it, IMHO. Basically it's starting over just now with the main character. Disappointing.

In response to that other review "what's in that other window in the final scene?" It's the twin towers, silly. Further cementing that it's 1994. Oye.

Definitely a let down for an ending, but I admit it has me wanting a second season, so there you have it ¯\(°_o)/¯

S1.E8 - Letdown [7/10]
panagiotis199330 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
(S1. E8) My Live Reaction / Review for Archive 81 Season 1 Episode 8 ''What Lies Beneath''. The previous episode was good and I gave it a rating of 8/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. We see Melody in this episode again, that's nice. Are they about to sacrifice Melody? I hope not. So Melody could be in the otherworld where Iris Vos is? Dan goes to Davenport for help? I don't know if that's a good idea. Wait, Dan's father had the tapes before Davenport? Interesting. Dan wants to do the Kaelego ritual? That's such a bad idea. Wow they found Melody's mom, I didn't see that coming. Is Dan now trapped in the otherworld? That ending sucks! Overall this episode was ok and I enjoyed it. My rating is 7/10.

But at the end, Melody come in the Dan's time and Dan in Melody's time. I dont khow if they will do a next season. The end let us suppose yes. Pretty good.

great occult horror story
Kenjislamberry14 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Archive 81 is a great occult horor story . The visuals are well done . I love the soundtrack its very mysterious and haunting . The visser cult prayer song is still stuck in my head . The show does the found footage trope but its very well done . I love the twist at the end with Dan getting stuck in 1994 . There is still a lot of questions that haven't been answered like who started the fire at the turner's house , What happened to Jess's mother and when did she become a sister , How does time work in the otherworld , How many baldung witches are still out there , Where did Samuel Spare / Alexander Davenport go when he went through the portal and Why did the portal send Dan back to 1994 . I enjoyed this series . I hope there is a season 2 there is still a lot of story to tell .

[6.8] Nothing lies beneath!
cjonesas22 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Episode 8: A weak finale that turns out to be the series finale. Very unfortunate.

The whole episode was campy and unrealistic only to explore Dan's "achievements" in 1994, which unfortunately will leave them to viewers' imagination.

A wasted episode full of potential.

What can't we see?
claudebrooks31 January 2022
This series definitely needs to be watched twice. Too much is left to our imagination. That may be a good thing. I could not look away. What is that reflection in the other window in the last shot of the final scene? I feel that there is more to come.

So Many Plotholes??
tatuteee24 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
What an awful conclusion to season 1. Bad writing and Plotholes kept on piling.

For example why didnt Melody just go out of the window with Jess but she had to stay in the room and wait to be snatched.. DUMB.

I dont even remember all the stupid decisions, but at the end part in the otherworld, why didnt Dan just go after Melody and Samuel, and btw WHERE IS SAMUEL if he went in the same portal with Melody!? Like what happened really?

Lastly. How in the heck did Dan just randomly teleport in the 90's?? In all logic he should've been stuck in the other world? My only thought how this is possible is that he went to the other open door/shiny portal behind the other door that was gateway to the 90's timeline.

Anyway, the characters choises and the writing went dumber and dumber. Shame, earlier episodes were promising.

Why?!
danielcalegari7 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Why Dan tried to save Melody first of all?

Why had other guy saved only Melody but not Dan?

Why this predictable ending? It was like "ah, forgive, we will have not a 2nd chance to continue this sht anyway, netflix cancelled it".
