George's sister Dierdre is insufferable!
AlsExGal18 April 2024
Dierdre, evil sister of George Baxter, has already dodged one bullet with the Nancy/Eddie relationship, and now she's holding over her daughter Nancy's head that she will ship her back to the finishing school that she hates unless she dates men other than Eddie. Nancy talks to a really nice young man who works at a gas station and when he asks for her number she gives it to him. Dierdre hears about it and hits the roof, refusing to let her see the guy. What she doesn't know is that the gas station attendant is a college student himself AND the son of George's college roommate. He's the most eligible bachelor in town!

Of course Dierdre erupts into tears when she finds out she's rejected this catch on the basis of her hideous snobbishness. I was surprised that tears didn't melt her since water is what melted the Wicked Witch in Wizard of Oz, but I digress. No wonder her husband travels on business so much. What a horrid human being she is. I guess she is a repeating character because she is a balance to the likeable Baxters.

Dierdre might take note of the fact that Nancy called Hazel when she wanted to leave the finishing school and come back home, not her mother.

Total Absolute Bewildering Head-Shaker

Warning: Spoilers
So George Baxter's sister Diedre has to contend with her daughter, George's niece then, dating Hazel's nephew Eddy.

When Nancy calls up Hazel sobbing about how unhappy she is at school, Hazel has George work on Diedre to get him to allow Nancy to come back home.

Diedre agrees, but only if Nancy says she'll date other boys, find someone else other than a maid's nephew.

Nancy agrees, THEN meets Bud Donavan working at the gas station. He seems nice enough, but once again Diedre refuses to allow such an event.

Diedre is literally blackmailing Nancy with threats to send her back to school.

Granted, if nothing else, we know machinations with schooling happened thanks to Joan Crawford and Mommiedearest. Shipping them off to school was nothing but punishment, but to see it tossed around so easily in this episode was eyebrow-raising.

So Bud comes by Hazel's, Hazel introduces him to the pretty visiting maid. Later Eddy himself shows up.

THEN George, Dorothy, Diedre and her husband arrive with Nancy and by chance, it is mentioned Bud's father was George's roommate at Yale. He's one of the most eligible bachelors in the social circuit.

"Oh, it's all so messed up," she sobs to her husband.

An absolute cantankerous episode of mass confusion.

One of the funniest bits is when Hazel apologizes to Diedre for yelling at her earlier. Hazel is ALWAYS yelling! Odd little dry piece of toast of an episode.

Moldie Oldie

This was made way back in 1962, when it was normal for parents to control every aspect of your life until they passed away.

In modern times, Deidre would not be considered a victim doing her best, but an abuser who should be incarcerated.

The only good part is where Hazel tells Deidre that she needs to listen to her daughter, or she'll lose her. Of course, Deidre doesn't listen to Hazel, as she's "only a maid".

Deidre is half right when she says that breeding will always tell in the end. Unfortunately, WHAT breeding tells is another matter - it doesn't make you better. It makes you an intolerant, insufferable, obnoxious boor.
