Warning: Spoilers
Al Milne has been 'on the lam' for 15 years. He escaped from jail somehow and moved far away. He started a new life and became a respected family man, with a wife and young son. He was a generous volunteer to his community. So far so good.... Al is at a charity event in his adopted town some evening. After the event he is offered a good job in a workshop of some sort, from a man that also was working at the charity event that evening. Al's wife approaches and hears the tail-end of the conversation and soon it is 2 people pressing Al to take the job,the man offering the job to Al, and Al's wife!

The job pays a fair bit more than he makes now,so he takes it-which turns out to be a bad move !

The problem is that Al must be bonded for the job, which involves fingerprints and a background check.

Things start to unravel from there.

Interesting case.

Really, really good.

I've seen many of the old episodes of "Public Defender"--a mid-1950s TV series that can be seen or downloaded for free at archive.org--a website linked to many of the IMDb pages. Of all the ones I've seen so far, "Out of the Past" is probably the best, though Public Defender Bart Matthews (Reed Hadley) doesn't have a lot to do in this episode.

When the show begins, Albert Milne has earned the respect of a fund-raising committee and everyone seems to love him. He's a decent, hard-working guy. But when he reluctantly takes a job that required bonding, the jig is up...and they discover Milne is another man...a guy on the run from a jail sentence for hit and run. This makes no sense, as Milne, or whoever he really is, has consistently shown himself to be a good man. And, he insists that while he did escape, he was NOT guilty of anyone's death. Later, you see that Albert's story is seen by the real hit and run driver...and his terrible wife repeatedly encourages him NOT to do the right thing.

This episode packs a nice emotional wallop and the story very involving. In fact, it would make for a terrific movie. Overall, well written, acted and worth your time. It packs a heck of a lot into 24 minutes!
