Not merely about its titular character, 'Story of Kale: When Someone's in Love' offers a horrifying look into an abusive relationship. Director Angga Dwimas Sasongko excels at mood and atmosphere even when the drama underwhelms.

A bittersweet look into an unhealthy realtionship

Kale in Dinda's eyes is somewhat of a hero. He saved her from an abusive relationship she was too scared to let go of. But slowly, he began to show signs of toxicity and over possessiveness. Despite how much they loved each other, the two are just not compatible to battle their insecurities together. This movie shows that a relationship can start out healthy and strong but can start to have cracks and fall apart. That leaving the relationship is as hard as staying in it. The film teaches us that we have to learn when to let go and love ourselves first before we can be loved or before we can love others.
