From Stephen Kay, director of Boogeyman and Stallone’s flat Get Carter remake who went on to directing a plethora of good television, comes Cell 213, a supernatural film about a young, ambitious lawyer who finds himself on the other side of the law when he is incarcerated in the film’s titular cell. Hounded by the brute guard and the otherworldly forces of Good and Evil, a claustrophobic battle for his soul rages.

Like much of the media, horror is a slave to trends. All of the torture treatises, zombie epics and palsied found-footage flicks that have dominated the last few years look to be tapering off, and the upcoming release slate is dotted with only a meager handful of remakes and sequels, so what themes will 2011 eventually be known for? Possibly, the return of the terror-behind-bars film, with John Carpenter’s asylum-based The Ward finally poised for release and today’s arrival of Stephen Kay’s Cell 213.

Burly, beloved character actor Michael Rooker is no stranger to horror, from his grim star turn in Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer to his literal slimeball of a villain in James Gunn’s Slither. Most recently, it was Rooker’s acclaimed involvement in AMC’s toweringly successful The Walking Dead series that gave a fresh boost to his many genre credits. While sitting down with Rooker and other cast members from the upcoming thriller Cell 213, Fangoria got a chance to try and wring any information about the possible return of Rooker’s Dead character, wounded redneck Merle Dixon.

The poster for the upcoming Canadian horror flick “Cell 213″ states that it’s from “acclaimed” horror director Stephen Kay, a filmmaker whose only real genre effort is the 2005 yawner “Boogeyman”. Strange, that. Have we reached that point in the genre where anyone who crafts a mediocre horror movie can consider themselves acclaimed? It would seem so. And while I am quite curious to see how the filmmaker’s latest effort “Cell 213″ plays out, I think a person should have at least a few snazzy films under their belt before they can profess to being an “acclaimed” director. I’m just saying. Enough about that. Here’s the plot: Cell 213 becomes home to Michael Gray a cocky young attorney, after a gruesome twist of circumstance lands him in the South River State Penitentiary, framed for the murder of an incarcerated client. Unnatural forces are causing prisoners to ‘off...

It was over a year ago when we first reported that Freestyle Releasing had nabbed U.S. theatrical distribution rights for upcoming horror flick Cell 213, but we've yet to see it. There is a Canadian TV spot floating around, however, and we've got it for you while we await our Stateside opportunity to dig this one.
The film stars Bruce Greenwood (Disturbing Behavior), Eric Balfour (that lousy Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake), Michael Rooker (Henry), and Deborah Valente (Resident Evil: Apocalypse). The TV spot certainly has some promise, and Canadians can check this one out beginning on June 10.
For those of us in the Us, keep watching this space. We'll give it when we get it. And enjoy this quick look at a promising genre film in the meantime.

It was announced last year that Matty Beckerman's finance and production shingle Natural Selection (The Experiment) had set helmer Stephen T. Kay to direct horror pic Isolation, which is now in post-production for festival screenings this year. Putting a new spin on the zombie genre, the pic stars Eva Amurri (Californication) and David Harbour (Revolutionary Road). Amurri plays a medical student who awakens in a hospital isolation room having been exposed to an unknown disease, desperately ill and with no recollection of how she got there. I don’t know about other interviewers and whether they have a favorite interviewee, but mine, hands down, is Michael Rooker. The guy is the total package: hilarious, serious about his craft, a goofball at times, but always willing to talk about his latest or upcoming projects. And he’s just Such a nice guy!
So, when "The Walking Dead" started, I knew I had to interview him for that as his character quickly became a fan favorite. Then, I got the bonus of discussing Rooker’s directorial debut, also in the horror genre, Pennhurst. The interview that follows took over two hours to conduct and a few extra days of back and forth to clean things up, but it was one of the most hilarious interviews I’ve done in quite a while.
Read on for Part One, focusing on "The Walking Dead", and look for Part Two, all about Pennhurst,...

Folks, I am not ashamed to admit that I Love Michael Rooker! And I'm sure many horror fans feel the same way. From his film debut as Henry in the horrifying Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer to being covered with goo as Grant Grant in James Gunn's hilarious Slither to his current role in three-time Oscar nominee Frank Darabont's adaptation of Robert Kirkman's "The Walking Dead" for AMC, Rooker (as he is known to his fans) never fails to deliver. Dread Central recently had an opportunity to speak with the hilarious and laid-back actor while he was at home, just chillin'.

Michael Rooker: Girl, I've finished a couple of horror films: Hypothermia and Cell 213, where I play a badass mo-fo prison guard. Cell 213 is a horror film set in a prison where,...
