City Hunter Live-Action Film Tops Netflix's Non-English Movie Chart - Main Image
It has now been a week since City Hunter’s release, and it’s officially a big hit. That’s because the new City Hunter live-action film topped the Netflix non-English movie chart worldwide in the past week.
According to Netflix’s charts, this new anime live-action adaptation from the streaming giant was confirmed to be the most-watched non-English movie on Netflix.
This is a big achievement, especially considering that it topped the charts based on data from April 22 to 28, even though it was released on April 25.

Greg Berlanti and Netflix are going for a ride in the Mystery Machine.
The streaming giant is near a deal for a live-action TV series based on the beloved Hanna-Barbera animated cartoon Scooby-Doo. The project has a script-to-series commitment at Netflix, meaning if the script is well received, it would trigger a straight-to-series order for what is considered a live-action update of the classic cartoon.
Reps for Netflix, producers Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions declined to comment, as a deal has not yet formally closed.
Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg — who previously adapted Cowboy Bebop for Netflix and High Fidelity for Hulu — are attached to pen the script and exec produce via their Midnight Radio banner’s André Nemec and Jeff Pinkner. Berlanti and his Berlanti Productions partner Sarah Schechter will exec produce alongside the company’s Leigh London Redman. Berlanti Productions’ Jonathan Gabay and Midnight Radio’s...

Disney’s “Space Mountain” has been reignited.
Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec, whose credits including “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” and the two Michael Bay-produced live-action “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” films, have been hired to write a new screenplay based on the beloved Disney Parks attraction, TheWrap has learned.
Jonathan Eirich from Rideback is producing the feature, along with Joby Harold (who wrote an earlier iteration of the project) and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse. Ryan Halprin of Rideback is executive producing.
The original Space Mountain opened as the centerpiece of the Magic Kingdom’s version of Tomorrowland in 1975, part of the expansive Walt Disney World resort outside of Orlando, Fla. The ride is known for its strikingly graphic design — comprised of a cone and spires that jut heavenward (and can be seen as part of John Hench’s early concept art) — and its thrilling, coaster-in-the-dark aesthetic. The results are in, and Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender seems to be a hit.
The live action adaptation topped the streamer’s weekly English-language TV list with 21.2M views in its opening weekend. According to Netflix, it reached the Top 10 in 92 countries. It was edged out as most-watched title of the week by the Swedish natural disaster film The Abyss.
That’s a strong showing for the eight-episode series, which was another big swing for Netflix as it continues to dip its toes into anime-inspired content. In fact, Avatar managed to surpass One Piece in its debut weekend.
As with One Piece, Netflix was firing on all cylinders to launch the series, partnering with Serena Williams and even taking over the Las Vegas Sphere. So far, the Avatar global social campaign has reached 1.53B impressions, which is on par with both One Piece as well as Netflix’s hit series Wednesday.

Putting it mildly, "Avatar: The Last Airbender" pulls a lot from Southeast Asian mythology and history. The show can't completely escape Orientalism but at least the writers did their research.
A savior named the Avatar with a reincarnation cycle? That's adapted (and heavily simplified) from Hindu myths about gods incarnating on Earth. The Fire Nation resembles 20th-century Imperial Japan: an island-chain nation undergoing its industrial revolution and colonizing its neighbors. Then there are the details of the setting, like architecture, outfits, and the in-universe writing system, which are all inspired by real-world Asian cultures. Even the show's animation is purposefully meant to resemble anime that co-creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante Dimartino loved, like Hayao Miyazaki movies and "Cowboy Bebop."
"Avatar: The Last Airbender" is a fantasy show and the magic system also pulls from Eastern concepts. In the show, spiritually-attuned people can control, or bend, one of the four classical elements: Water,...

Although it is not very typical for a protagonist in anime to pass away, there are a number of anime series where the protagonist’s demise plays a major role in the plot. The most significant event in the program is nearly usually the death of the main character, whether it’s through dealing a severe emotional blow or advancing the plot by giving the reins to a new character.
Even though some of them might live again in the future, their deaths had a profound effect on everyone in their immediate vicinity. The protagonist’s death doesn’t always mean the series is going to end. It just hands over the reign to someone who is either related to the character or becomes more significant to the series.

An HBO series from A24, starring Park Chan-wook, & Robert Downey Jr., scarcely requires marketing. However, the latest trailer for The Sympathizer, based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, excites fans to watch the show.

A Spy Has Countless Faces in the Latest Trailer of HBO & A24’s ‘The Sympathizer’
The trailer for The Sympathizer makes it hard to figure out what is happening, which is the film’s goal. The buzzy upcoming Max series crosses genres and tones, tilts from tragic to satirical, and covers the complicated history of the post-Vietnam War era—all anchored by a mysterious, unknown spy (Hoa Xuande) in its center.
The fact that Downey portrays multiple different scary avatars of American imperialism is only the tip of the iceberg regarding The Sympathizer’s several levels of mystery and deception.

While it might seem like Ghost Stories was only acting on the emerging J-Horror trend, this 2000 anime was in fact another adaptation of Tōru Tsunemitsu’s popular series of children’s books. After four live-action films based on the teacher-turned-author’s books, animation was the obvious next step. The anime — technically the second after a standalone ’96 Ova — has since gone on to become a favorite among Western audiences, although not for reasons the Japanese showrunners could have expected. No, this series is best remembered for its off-the-wall English adaptation that many fans liken to South Park.
Admittedly, Ghost Stories didn’t leave a big mark upon and after its initial release (other than a controversy regarding the ultimately unaired Kuchisake-onna episode). In its defense, though, many anime back then had a hard time standing out or living up to new expectations. As a reminder, that previous decade gave rise to...

In a world replete with quick-spreading disinformation and the subsequent, dangerous proliferation of kooky conspiracy theories, the 2021 animated series "Inside Job" — created by Shion Takeuchi (a writer on "Gravity Falls" and "Disenchantment") — was perfectly timed. "Inside Job" posited that every single conspiracy theory you've ever heard — whether it be Reptilians, JFK, the Mandela effect, the flat Earth, or the faked moon landing — were all 100 percent real. Clones were out there, severed heads were being kept alive in labs, and aliens regularly visited Earth. Just like in "The X-Files," ordinary citizens weren't allowed access to this knowledge.
Earth's conspiracies were overseen by a mysterious underground organization called Cognito, Inc., one of six major shadow governments secretly in charge of the world. The other five were the Catholic Church, the Illuminati, Atlantis, the Reptoids, and the Juggalos (tee hee). The central joke of "Inside Job" was that Cognito, Inc. was staffed by flawed,...

In the late 1990s, Bandai Entertainment and the Japanese animation studio Sunrise approached young director Shinichirō Watanabe to make a sci-fi action show (mostly so they could sell spaceship toys). Watanabe took that directive and led the creation of "Cowboy Bebop."
This 26-episode show followed down-on-their-luck bounty hunters in the year 2071, when mankind has colonized the solar system and left behind a ruined Earth. It brought Western and noir storytelling together into its sci-fi setting, fused with an existential mood and jazzy music composed by Yoko Kanno.
"Cowboy Bebop" first aired in Japan 25 years ago, from 1998 to 1999, and Bandai Entertainment soon imported it stateside, where it debuted on Cartoon Network block Adult Swim in 2001. If anything, it's become an even bigger (and more enduring) hit in the U.S. than in its homeland. A big reason for this popularity was because the English dub was excellent: The characters speaking the...

Actor Peter Spellos had over 150 screen acting and vocal performance credits to his name, but genre fans are most likely to remember him as Orville Ketchum from the slasher movie Sorority House Massacre II and its companion piece Hard to Die, as well as the brief appearance he made as the character Tracy’s father in Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare. Outside of horror, he’s best known for providing the voice of Sky-Byte in 39 episodes of the animated series Transformers: Robots in Disguise. The end of the 2023 actors’ strike seems to have opened the floodgates on promotions — the last 24 hours have been packed with trailers and teasers for upcoming series, including Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg’s TV reunion and the latest adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
A quirky spy drama, an urgent documentary short, and Netflix’s answer to The Summer I Turned Pretty round out our favorite trailers of the week.
Netflix’s Geeked Week is in full swing, offering sneak peeks and more info on the streamer’s biggest genre properties. The new Avatar: The Last Airbender is easily one of the most anticipated titles, even if Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop recently made viewers leery of live-action adaptations. But the trailer for the new series based on Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko’s animated show, which premiered in 2005 on Nickelodeon, has an equal sense of wonder and foreboding.

Netflix's track record with producing live-action anime is mixed, at best. The streamer's "One Piece" series has already been renewed, but the live-action "Cowboy Bebop" was a swiftly-canceled mess.
Their most infamous project, however, is probably "Death Note." This story, first told by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata in a mega-popular manga, focuses on the Japanese teenager Light Yagami. One day, a notebook falls from the sky into Light's lap. Dropped by a Shinigami (a Japanese death god) named Ryuk, the "death note" will kill anyone whose name is written on its pages. Light decides to purge the world of evil by using the Death Note to kill high-profile criminals, becoming a serial killer himself in the process. Dubbed "Kira" (a Japanese pronunciation of "Killer"), he gains allies (deludedly loyal pop idol Misa Amane) and adversaries (eccentric master detective L).
This 2017 film, directed by Adam Wingard, transposed this story to Seattle.

It looks like Netflix won't be giving "One Piece" the "Cowboy Bebop" treatment. The new live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda's manga has just been renewed for a second season, as announced by the author himself. "Two weeks after the launch, I just received some great news. Netflix has decided to renew the show!" Oda shared in a message via "Transponder Snail." He added: "The adventures of Iñaki and the live-action Straw Hats will continue onward!"
The live-action "One Piece" premiered on the streamer in late August and has been met with praise from fans of both the manga and Toei Animation's long-running anime adaptation. With 20 seasons of that series and counting, plus 106 volumes of the manga, there's plenty more source material for the latest iteration of the story to pull from. The series follows a crew of adventurers called the Straw Hat Pirates, led by semi-superpowered Monkey D.

“One Piece” has officially been renewed for a second season after dominating Netflix’s global Top 10 charts for the past two weeks.
The streamer announced the renewal on X in a video with the property’s creator, Eiichio Oda. In the video, Oda censors his face — a move that has become part of the creator’s brand — and picks up a signature “One Piece” snail phone.
“What did you think of Season 1 of the live-action ‘One Piece?’ I spent a long time working on it with Netflix and Tomorrow Studios,” Oda says. “To everyone who’s been a fan of ‘One Piece’ for years, and to those who experienced ‘One Piece’ for the first time, thank you so much.”
The manga creator then announces the series has been renewed for a second season. “The adventures of Iñaki [Godoy] and the live-action Straw Hats will continue onward. It’ll still take a...

The Streaming Era began with a promise of nurturing shows without fear of ratings pressure and quick cancellations. Of course, that was a lark. Soon enough, the streamers began slashing shows as quickly and brutally as any Nielsen-obsessed broadcaster, and they were all flooded with same complaint: “The streamers just cancel everything! Nothing gets more than a season anymore!”
How true is that really? After all, the streamers are looking for hit shows, just like traditional networks. If a show gets high viewership relative to the cost of producing it, it gets renewed. Otherwise, it is canceled. That is how it has worked since the days of black-and-white TV.
To get to the heart of the matter, Variety Intelligence Platform (VIP+) and Luminate collaborated on a data exploration to determine how often the leading U.S.-based streaming and linear programmers have canceled series TV series over the past three years.

One Piece, the live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s best-selling manga, just wrapped its second week at No. 1 in Netflix’s Top 10 with another dominating performance internationally. And, in what is becoming a right of passage for every series that hits it big with young adults these days (like Netflix’s Wednesday), One Piece sparked a TikTok craze with tributes to its demented villain Buggy.
In an interview with Deadline, One Piece executive producers, Tomorrow Studios’ Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements, spoke about how the tide turned on TikTok, with skeptical fans of the manga and anime series embracing the live-action adaptation of the story about a young man and his pirate crew’s search for the fabled “One Piece” treasure.

“One Piece” continues to lead the list of titles during the Sept. 4-10 viewing window on the Netflix Top 10 chart. Picking up another 19.2 million total views in its first full week of availability, the figure pushed the series to the most viewed title of the week.
In its first four days of availability, the live-action adaptation of the Japanese manga quickly sailed to the top of Netflix’s top 10 chart with 18.5 million total views. The Straw Hat Pirates are growing their ranks.
The audience for Netflix’s One Piece ballooned during the series’ first full week on the service, tallying 19.3M views from September 4 to September 10 and easily making it to the top of Netflix’s English-language TV list for the week. The audience is up nearly a million views from last week, when the adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s manga accumulated 18.5M views in its premiere weekend.
The eight-episode series still has a ways to go before it could land on the all-time most popular list, but 37.8M views in less than two weeks is still quite a feat. And there’s plenty of time left in the series’ 91-day premiere window to make it happen.
This is quite the win for Netflix, which threw significant resources into the adaptation. There was certainly a lot riding on One Piece, since it was a...

One Piece has been a huge hit for Netflix, with fans clamoring for more, but what arcs from the anime would a second season likely include?
While a second has yet to be confirmed, the show left a huge tease for fans with its post-credits scene. It's helped that, unlike Netflix's other live-action anime adaptation, Cowboy Bebop, this series was retrieved fairly well by critics and fans.

Though the fate of Netflix’s “One Piece” remains unknown despite its successful Aug. 31 launch, producers reveal that scripts for a potential season 2 are complete, therefore ready for production, shall they receive the green light.
“We’ve got scripts ready,” Marty Adelstein, CEO of Tomorrow Studios — which produces the live action pirate adventure with manga creator, Eiichiro Oda, and publisher, Shueisha — told Variety on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Tomorrow Studios president, Becky Clements, is confident that season 2 could premiere as early as next year, once production is able to start upon the SAG-AFTRA strike reaching an agreement with the AMPTP.

On the heels of its splashy debut, the producers behind Netflix’s “One Piece” say scripts for a possible Season 2 are completed and that the next season could be “ready to air” in a year, once production is able to begin.

Though production on a potential second season would not be able to begin until the SAG-AFTRA strike against the AMPTP has been resolved, Tomorrow Studios president Becky Clements says once they’re allowed to get going again, Season 2 could launch as early as next year.

(Welcome to Ani-time Ani-where, a regular column dedicated to helping the uninitiated understand and appreciate the world of anime.)
I've written before about how horror anime doesn't always work because the medium of animation (except for stop motion) inherently makes it harder to create a feeling of dread and horror. While that is true, it is not the same with melodramas, of which there are many in anime. There are many shows that deliver truly stunning pieces of emotional art that make tears flow like rivers (and I've covered some right here).
Yet there are few anime dramas that are capable of ripping your heartstrings and tying them in knotty messes while also delivering feature film-level quality in TV form quite like "Violet Evergarden," a show that is part tech demo for Kyoto Animation, and part experiment in empathy (seeing how much a show can make the audience cry in...

Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s bestselling manga “One Piece” launched Friday, giving fans their long-awaited chance to compare the eight-episode first season to its print and anime versions.
The manga takes place in a fantastical world where pirates and marines battle for control over the Blue Sea. Young boy Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) grows up aspiring to be the next king of the pirates, despite his inability to swim — a side effect of the magical “Gum Gum” Devil Fruit he ate as a child, which gave him an extraordinarily stretchy body as a gift from the sea, along with the curse that he cannot survive in its waters. We've seen so many live-action adaptations of stories that have been previously told in animation in just the past decade, from Disney classics to beloved anime. And it's easy for creatives to feel the need to try and "fix" or change elements of the characterization for live-action. Sometimes these changes are for the better, like correcting caricatures from insensitive times, but sometimes they feel arbitrary and make the characters unrecognizable. Somehow, the live-action "One Piece" show has the perfect balance of changing just enough to make these cartoon characters work in real life while staying true to the 2D characters audiences have loved for over 25 years.

Film and television adaptations of stories from other media consistently face uphill battles. Even the most faithful of adaptations can ruffle the feathers of the source material’s die-hard fans or lead audiences to question the point of the adaptation in the first place. Anime and manga have had an even harder time on this front as their live-action adaptations not only have to figure out how to ostensibly bring cartoons to life, but also take into consideration a multitude of sensitive cultural issues.
Audiences are used to writing off live-action anime adaptations after decades of being burnt by projects like Dragon Ball Evolution, Death Note, Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop, and this year’s Knights of the Zodiac, with live-action versions of Yu Yu Hakusho and My Hero Academia already in development. The first episode of Netflix’s “One Piece,” an English live-action adaptation of the long-running Japanese manga series from artist Eiichiro Oda, starts off the same way that the first 47 installments of said manga’s anime adaptation begins. The franchise is set in an unnamed world covered almost completely by sea, where piracy runs rampant thanks in part to the execution of the King of the Pirates, Gold Roger. Before his death, Roger told onlookers that his life’s treasure, the so-called “One Piece,” was hidden away somewhere, and whoever found it would be his worthy successor.
In the anime version of this moment, Roger’s final moment is handled via a roughly 20-second intro to the show’s credits sequence, portrayed as a series of finely-detailed drawings on a long piece of parchment paper. The Netflix series, which releases all eight of its episodes on Thursday, opts to fully...

As a school of adaptation, the live-action take on anime and manga is only slightly less cursed than the live-action series or film based on a video game. Yet remarkably, 2023 is set to be a banner year for both. In January, HBO premiered “The Last of Us,” the hit drama that takes the same somber, character-driven approach to a zombie apocalypse as the 2013 game. With rave reviews, major ratings and a raft of Emmy nominations, “The Last of Us” successfully bucked a multi-decade trend. A few months later, “The Super Mario Bros.” movie would repeat the feat at the box office, if not quite with critics.
Netflix may have eyed this trend with some interest as the global streaming service has prepared the launch of “One Piece,” a series adapted from the long-running manga written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. Similar undertakings have a checkered history, a fact Netflix itself...

Two years ago, Netflix debuted Cowboy Bebop, a live-action adaptation of the beloved Japanese anime about spacefaring bounty hunters in the 22nd century. I found this new version lively and thrilling, but I admittedly had never seen the original. For the most part, it seemed, the most interested audience for it were fans of the anime, and they did not like any of the changes made. Unsurprisingly, Netflix did not order a second season.

Eiichiro Oda, One Piece creator and executive producer on Netflix’s upcoming adaptation, says that he changed his mind about whether his long-running manga could get a live-action adaption after both technology advances and seeing Shaolin Soccer.
In a rare interview with The New York Times, the Japanese artist behind the best-selling manga in history discusses how Stephen Chow’s 2001 Hong Kong sports comedy inspired the live-action take and how he ensured his upcoming series — which follows a stream of live-action manga adaptation misses — would be satisfactory to fans.
“When I first started, I didn’t think there was any point in drawing a manga that could be remade in live-action,” Oda said. “But when I saw the movie [Chow’s] , it felt like a manga-esque world brought to life.”

"Don't let anything get in the way of your dreams." "Not everyone gets to follow their dreams..." Netflix has unveiled one final official trailer for the live-action One Piece series, based on the super popular anime series (and manga). It's available to watch starting tomorrow on Netflix - hence this final marketing push. The seafaring story follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a boy who can turn rubber. With his crew of pirates, named the "Straw Hat Pirates", Luffy explores the Grand Line in search of the ultimate treasure known as "One Piece" in order to become the next Pirate King. The manga by Eiichirô Oda was turned into an anime series, originally in 1999, with a total of 20 seasons. The live-action series stars Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji; plus an ensemble cast with Vincent Regan,...

The breakout popularity of “Stranger Things” and “Wednesday” was a boon for Netflix execs, but also a lesson — both forced a scramble to line up marketing and licensing deals after launch. If the streamer’s upcoming fantasy-adventure series “One Piece” similarly turns into a phenom — as the early hype indicates — this time they’ll be ready.
Of all the titles promoted out of Netflix’s June 17 Tudum fan event, “One Piece” — the live-action TV series adaptation of the bestselling manga — was the most talked about, outpacing everything else featured at the São Paulo affair four to one, according to Netflix. “One Piece” lead actor Iñaki Godoy has seen his Instagram following spike from 28,000 to 450,000 ahead of the show’s Aug. 31 premiere.
“I think we were all stunned, truly stunned,” Netflix head of U.S. and Canada scripted series Peter Friedlander told Variety. “We knew that there was a big fan base,...

In the decades since Japanese animation broke through to the mainstream of Western pop culture, Hollywood has been eager to mine it for precious content. It's not hard to see why. Anime has offered us some of the most fascinating, creatively striking, and challenging entertainment of the past fifty years. Consider the cyberpunk body horror ambitions of "Akira," the space Western melancholy of "Cowboy Bebop," or the astonishing achievements of Studio Ghibli. Anime has exploded in popularity in recent years, in large part thanks to greater accessibility to the material via streaming platforms like Crunchyroll. One such series that has broken through in a major way is "One Piece," a comedy-action saga about warring bands of pirates that is almost as beloved in America as it is in Japan.

John Cho is a man of many talents, a star in any and every genre he explores. He’s built to be a leading man, even making our list of actors who need to star in a romantic comedy. Yet, in examining Cho’s impressive acting resume, his three most recent TV roles all tap into one archetype— that of the cowboy. From playing an intergalactic bounty hunter in Cowboy Bebop, to a tortured traveler in The Afterparty, or even a hunky farmer in Praise Petey, Cho is proving himself to be the modern Western hero.

Netflix's track record with live-action anime is not a strong one. "Cowboy Bebop" fans and director Shinichiro Watanabe are still reeling from that adaptation. Netflix now has its sights on "One Piece," the absurdly popular, 25+ year-long manga/anime about pirate captain Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat crew. This time, though, the series' original creator — mangaka Eiichiro Oda — is on board as an executive producer. From glimpses behind-the-scenes, this wasn't just an honorary title either.
Oda wrote a letter of support for the series, shared by Netflix on Twitter on July 21, 2023. Oda praised the work of the cast and crew, saying "There were no compromises on this show!" while encouraging fans to give it a chance despite its differences with the source material. Calling the show's producers and crew "'One Piece'" superfans, he was just as complimentary of the actors: "There were also some lines that...

Among every different literary medium out there that is used as source material for live-action adaptations, adapting manga or anime is one of the toughest things to do. More often than not, the differences in expression, visual output, and tone ruins the adaptation, and sometimes the content itself turns out to not be suitable for a live-action iteration. When it comes to Netflix’s live-action anime adaptations, their track record is absolutely horrible, given how badly they treated two of the most influential anime of all time, Death Note and Cowboy Bebop.
Understandably, there were concerns about Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Zom 100: Bucket List of The Dead, but the curious admixture of post-apocalyptic horror and humor, along with beautiful spectacle, was something that deserved to be showcased by actors on screen. And series fans will surely be happy to learn that despite some key differences, Zom 100 stands out...
