The Christmas season is a special time for many. A chance for friends to gather and spread cheer, or clans to gather in the warm glow of familial love. Sometimes, however, the warm glow cools down, love turns to hate, and the carving knife is put to more insidious uses. Welcome to ABC’s Home for the Holidays (1972), a fun murder mystery filled with proto-slasher goodness.
Originally broadcast November 28th as part of the ABC Tuesday Movie of the Week, Home for the Holidays was up against CBS’s Hawaii Five-o and NBC’s The Bold Ones: The New Doctors (whatever that was) and had a solid showing, as ABC often did with this particular brand. However, you won’t find any Snoopies or undernourished trees in this Holiday special.
Let’s open our eggnog soaked TV Guide and see what’s going on around the tree:

Some weeks ago a Hilton manager made a very big mistake. Once Hilton Corporate realized who and what they were dealing with, I was asked what I wanted. This question, always asked in situations where litigation is an option, is a ploy devised to test you. Your answer determines their resolve, your intelligence and rather or not a hotel offers you $50.00 off your next stay or $50 million for you to go away.

Good news, my creeps: Michale Graves‘ new horror rock opus When Worlds Collide is almost here, and I’ve had a chance to let it fill up my eerie earholes! Read on for a full review, an interview with the man himself, and more!
Michale Graves – When Worlds Collide (Music Review)
• Release Date: Available Now
I can’t even describe how excited I was to get my greedy lil’ claws on the latest release from Michale Graves. Not only is this the newest entry in his legacy of horror-punk-terror tunes, this album promised a first: a sequel to a song he penned back in his tenure in the group that started the whole shebang, the Misfits… and not just any song, my fiends—this would be a follow up to what is undoubtedly his signature song, Crying on a Saturday Night! Admittedly, that is a s–t-ton to live up to,...

With the death of horror film legend Christopher Lee, the last of the legendary honor guard of horror has passed on. He was part of an elite group that created the horror genre. Lee’s passing is a reminder that it’s been a long time since we had a new horror film superstar. Is the day of the horror film specialist gone forever? Where are the big-screen boogie-men for the 21st century?
Once upon a time there were a group of actors, known as the ‘screen boogiemen’ who created the horror film/monster movie genre (starting in Universal Studios and later in Hammer Studios.) They were specialists who understood the psychology and performance style of horror cinema and became legends in the industry. The first was silent film star Lon Chaney Sr. (Phantom of the Opera, London After Midnight, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, the Unholy Three, the Monster,...

If youre interested in a super strange flick about what I think is ultimately good and evil Dark House may work for you. If youre an absolutely diehard fan of Victor Salvas work Dark House may work for you. If youre a relatively sensible fan out to discover a clear quality understandable and frightening tale that breaks the mold youre just not going to find it here. Sadly this is some of the most underwhelming work Ive ever seen from Salva who really is a talented dude contrary to anything you may have heard. Was Dark House better after a second viewing I think it may have actually been a tad worse.

Today's MPAA ratings bulletin begins with the latest rom-com starring Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler in the PG-13-rated Blended while Dreamworks' video game adaptation Need for Speed also scores the expected 13-and-under rating. And with an R-rating is the Toronto Film Festival standout, Denis Villeneuve's Enemy starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Perhaps a little more interesting to some is the PG rating for the upcoming Pixar short film Party Central which will play in front of Muppets Most Wanted on March 21. The short features Mike and Sulley from Monsters University with a story described as such: Mike and Sulley are back at Monsters University for a fun-filled weekend with their Oozma Kappa fraternity brothers. The gang is throwing their first party, but no one's showing up. Luckily for them, Mike and Sulley have come up with a plan to make sure "Party Central" is the most epic party the school has ever seen.

It’s been twenty-five years since Charles Lee Ray first possessed a Good Guy doll in a Chicago toy store whilst on the run from the cops and in that time we’ve had a further four Child’s Play movies – the last almost ten years ago (has it really been that long?) – each of which has successively watered down the creepy tale of Chucky, taking the series from its tongue-in-cheek slasher beginnings to a mocking parody of its very own franchise. Thankfully Curse of Chucky, from series creator Don Mancini, returns to the “fun and fear” formula which made the original film such a success.

December was a slow month for horror additions to the Netflix streaming library, but we wanted to let readers know about a handful of new titles that were recently released, including The Devil Inside, Night of the Living Dead: Reanimation and The Grudge 3. Don’t forget that all completed seasons of Supernatural are still available on Netflix, along with Seasons 1 and 2 of The Walking Dead.
There are also four seasons of The Twilight Zone available, which we always recommend to horror fans that don’t own the entire series already. Below is a list of many of the newly released titles, along with titles we previously covered. Keep in mind that this list is from the Us Netflix streaming library and may differ depending on the deals Netflix has in place in other countries.

At the very least, it’s finished. According to the La Times, Something Wicked, an indie project with the ignoble distinction of being Brittany Murphy‘s last film appearance before her death in 2009, has been completed and is currently seeking distribution. The only problem is that the project has little going for it other than that distinction. Director Darin Scott has been behind the camera for a handful of middling flicks (Dark House, Caught Up), and Murphy was the only notable name in the cast. Even the synopsis, “As a young couple embarks upon their wedding plans, gruesome secrets from their past collide with sinister forces of the present to ensure these newlyweds do not live “happily-ever-after,” isn’t all that rousing — leaving this movie as little more than a curiosity. Maybe Murphy fans will rally for its release?...

Rites of Spring (2011) Mpi Home Video DVD Available Now
After abducting the daughter of a wealthy socialite, a group of kidnappers seek refuge in an abandoned school in the middle of a wooded nowhere. Little do they know that they’ve chosen the hunting grounds of a ravenous creature that can only be sated by ritualistic sacrifices every spring. Writer/director Padraig Reynolds’ crime thriller/slasher hybrid received mixed reviews during its short festival run, but it’s a solidly crafted piece with some good performances and impressive cinematography by Carl Herse. The one-sheet art is a thing of beauty.
Heaven’s Gate (1981) Criterion Blu-ray and DVD Available Now
Michael Cimino’s critically panned revisionist western has slowly gained a reputation as an overlooked gem. While it’s no masterpiece, his director’s cut is far better than the confusing...

American Horror House starring Morgan Fairchild and Alessandra Torresani premieres tonight at 9/8c on Syfy.
Synopsis:
On Halloween night a sorority house is overrun with ghosts while a vengeful housemother goes on a killing spree. The American Horror House Original Movie is directed by Darin Scott (Dark House) and stars Morgan Fairchild and Alessandra Torresani.Entertainment Weekly says:
Continuing Syfy's schlock legacy, Horror pits buxom sorority pledges against an evil housemother (Morgan Fairchild) who's harvesting the souls of unfortunate visitors. The gore, acting, and screenplay are decidedly camp — which I suspect is kind of the point — making for silly, brainless Halloween fun. And to prove it's ultra-contemporary, it's all set to dubstep! No, really.
And from Shock Till You Drop:
American Horror House works because it does not take itself seriously and has modest ambitions. With healthy doses of sniping sorority girls and plenty of pop culture references, very often it is intentionally funny.

Syfy's 13th Day of Halloween proves dreadfully unlucky for the partygoers and sorority pledges in tonight's original movie, American Horror House. Morgan Fairchild and Alessandra Torresani co-star in this ghostly tale directed by Darin Scott (Femme Fatales, Dark House).
Last week screen icon Morgan Fairchild spoke with reporters about her wide-ranging career, this film and what it was like making it.
She began by revealing her fandom for these kinds of films, which was the primarily reason she agreed to play Ms. Margot here. "I must confess I’m quite a devotee of the Syfy movie channel. I watch Syfy movies on the weekends. I’ve always enjoyed these kinds of fun movies. Even when I'm not at home, my boyfriend knows to record their new nine o'clock movies for me every Saturday. I like monsters and ghosts and I’m a big vampire fan. I loved Dracula and Frankenstein and all of that.

With Syfy’s Original Movie American Horror House debuting tomorrow, October 13th, at 9Pm, we caught up with Latin actress Isabel Cueva, who stars alongside Morgan Fairchild and Alessandra Torresani in the Darin Scott-directed ghost flick.
Cueva, who previously appeared in Jack the Reaper and will next appear alongside Danny Trejo in American Flyer, said of her experience with American Horror House, “I love playing dramatic characters, and I loved the experience of playing a character that changes throughout the story; the killer in this movie is very creative in the way he/she kills! You will see people die, but not in the common ways we see in horror films, and while I don’t get to do any screaming, I do cry.”
Check out the exclusive clip and photo below as well as the trailer for American Horror House.

If you are looking for something original or suspenseful, do not bother with the Syfy Channel’s American Horror House, airing on Saturday, October 13th as part of the network’s 31 Days of Halloween.
However, if you happen to be in the mood for some goofy fun and, generally speaking, enjoy Syfy fare, look no further.
Penned by Syfy veteran Anthony Ferrante (Haunted High, Leprechaun’s Revenge, Headless Horseman) and directed by Darin Scott, who helmed Dark House and co-wrote Tales from the Hood, American Horror House is a convoluted mess. It kicks off with a little girl murdering her parents in bed and immediately jumps to the present. Who they all were and when the murders occurred is unclear.

From George Smiley to James Gordon to....Wiggy the angry taxidermist? You can't say that Gary Oldman doesn't continue to surprise...
The actor is teaming up with Malcolm McDowell, Dominic "Matthew Fox Beats Women" Monaghan and Joanne Whalley for "Monster Butler," which either sounds like a delightful kids' movie, a weird sequel to "Monster's Ball" or a deranged genre flick. Guess which one it is? Well, if you picked the latter, you win, because according to THR the movie will tell "the true story of Roy Fontaine (aka Archibald Hall),a bisexual jewel thief/con man/serial killer who chronicles his personal descent into darkness leading up to his eventual capture."
McDowell is in the lead role, with his character teaming up with Wiggy to commit a variety of crimes. Meanwhile, Monaghan will play Fontaine's Achilles' heel, David Wright. Genre shingle Dark House are producing the pic which will be released by Warner Bros.

For reasons that can’t quite be articulated, just watch it.
We’re all quite lucky to have Warner Archive continually shelling out lost and rare and forgotten titles, always showcasing various bits and bobs of our shared cinematic history. Sack Barrow (2011)
In Monday's Briefing, I devoted a couple of paragraphs to Ben Rivers, and today sees a double bill of Sack Barrow and Slow Action, followed on Monday by a screening of Two Years at Sea, all, of course, as part of the New York Film Festival's Views from the Avant-Garde program.
"Ben Rivers makes work that celebrates the simplest virtues of craft, self-reliance, and the solitary life in the face of a future that may expunge all traces of humanity," writes Tony Pipolo for Artforum. "Sack Barrow, dedicated to the workers in a factory that had engaged in metal electroplating and finishing since 1931, was filmed during its last month of operation in 2010. Though the site appears old and grungy, the colors and compositions of every shot are anything but. Abel Gance isn't usually associated with slapstick comedy, and Max Linder isn't usually associated with anything else, and yet here they are in 1925, at the end of Linder's significant career and near the end of Gance's golden age (Napoleon was just around the corner: his career would run on to 1972). Gance's real masterworks, like La roue and Napoleon and J'accuse!, don't tend to feature humor as a big element, and they do depend on a real epic sweep to their long-form narratives, so one could be forgiven for approaching Au secours! (1924), which clocks in at under half an hour, as at best a minor divertissement. But I'd argue that, on its own quirky terms, without making any claim of importance or significance, it's an utterly amazing piece of cinema.
Linder could be plausibly credited with introducing the concept of elegance into screen comedy, thus paving the way for Chaplin (who...

D.J. Caruso's passion project, The Goats, has cast it's leads after over ten years in development. Variety reports that Chandler Canterbury (Knowing) and Annalise Basso (Dark House) have been cast in the indie drama, which is based on the critically acclaimed young adult novel by Brock Cole.
The story follows "two kids at summer camp who fall victim to a cruel prank that leaves them stranded on Goat Island. Rather than face the humiliation of returning to camp, the duo decide to run away together; what follows is a three-day journey of self-discovery."
The Goats is being produced by Ar Films founder Alexander Rodnyansky and Media Talent Group founder and chairman Geyer Kosinski. John McAdams, Serge Bespalov, James Brubaker and Ken Aguado are set to executive produce the film, which is schedule to start this October in Georgia.
