Scott Derrickson (The Day The Earth Stood Still) seems to be lining up some pretty decent casts for his films of late. Keanu Reeves top-lined The Day The Earth Stood Still a few years back; Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Taylor Lautner were announced last month as closely circling the leading roles in his upcoming take on the Goliath story.
And now word comes via ComingSoon.net that Academy Award-winning actress, Charlize Theron (Monster, Hancock), is signing on to star in a remake of Dutch supernatural thriller, Zwart Water (Black Water), which Derrickson has co-written with long-time collaborator, Paul Harris Boardman.
The original Zwart Water is described as follows:
“Nine-year-old Lisa has always thought that her mother, Christine, looked at her like she was someone else. As a result, Lisa feels disconnected from her mother, but is very close to her father, Paul. When her maternal grandmother dies leaving the family a huge old house,...

The delightfully hot Charlize Theron ('Monster') is set to star and produce the remake of Dutch horror flick 'Zwart Water'. The Summit Entertainment production is set to be directed by Scott Derrickson ('The Exorcism of Emily Rose') will helm the project from the script adapted by scribe Paul Harris Boardman, who also penned 'Hellraiser: Inferno' and 'Urban Legends: Final Cut'. Charlize (below) will also be steaming up the specs of many-a sci-fi geek next Summer when she stars in Ridley Scott's new 'Alien'-esque prequel 'Prometheus'. The original ghost story from writer/director Elbert van Strien was released last year as 'Two Eyes Staring' internationally, which is surprising due to the actual translation being 'Black Water', and starred Hadewych Minis, Barry Atsma, Isabelle Stokkel and Charlotte Arnoldy. Check out the plot info from the original below.

Charlize Theron will soon be seeing ghosts.
Things are starting to get a little creepy with the "Hancock" star as she's signed on to produce and star in the American remake of the Dutch horror thriller, "Two Eyes Staring," according to Heat Vision.
"Two Eyes Staring," which was originally titled "Zwart Water" (which, in some ways, sounds more ominous), centers around a nine-year-old girl who discovers that her strange new friend happens to be her mother's dead twin (zoinks!). Theron will be playing the mother, a "troubled" woman, to say the least.
The remake will be directed by Scott Derrickson, who knows a thing or two about horror after calling the shots on the underrated "The Exorcism of Emily Rose." Derrickson is also no stranger to remakes, having directed "The Day the Earth Stood Still," which starred Theron's pal and two-time co-star, Keanu Reeves.

Charlize Theron is apparently keen to get in on the genre game. She's been involved with a few thrillers in the past, but never a full-on horror movie, but soon that will change when she takes on the lead role in an Americanization of the Dutch ghost movie Two Eyes Staring (titled Zwart Water in its native tongue). The Hollywood Reporter tells us that Theron's production company, Denver and Delilah Films, actually acquired the rights to the film last year and they've now announced a writer-director team for the project: Scott Derrickson and Paul Boardman. Horror fans will recognize Derrickson and Boardman as the team who gave the world The Exorcism of Emily Rose, though this is their first team-up since then. Derrickson is currently shooting Sinister, which he...

Just when Scott Derrickson began directing another original project — this one being the Ethan Hawke starrer, Sinister — THR informs us that he’ll jump back into the remake pool not long after. This time around, it’s an update of the 2010 thriller Two Eyes Staring, with Charlize Theron starring and producing.
The original film, known in its native Dutch tongue as Zwart Water, follows “a nine-year girl old who discovers that her new friend is not only sinister but also is her mother’s dead twin.” In the new version, Theron will star as the “not quite right in the head” mother of the girl. As it turns out, the Young Adult star has been one of the main creative forces behind this remake; in addition to picking it up through her Denver and Delilah Films, she also hired Derrickson and Paul Boardman, his Exorcism of Emily Rose co-writer, to adapt it.

Don't be surprised if Charlize Theron decides not to interrupt what looks like a promising career revival--via Young Adult/Prometheus/Snow White and the Huntsman--with an ugly step-sister. It's a remake of Zwart Water, a Dutch horror film about a little girl whose new friend is the ghost of her mother's dead twin, in which Theron (her production company Denver & Delilah bought the rights; they also produced Young Adult) is set to play the mother. Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose) will direct. This sounds like the kind of project Hilary Swank would do (see: The Reaping). We're betting that Theron won't end up in the film. - Screenwriter William Monahan shares his thoughts with Collider on the Sin City sequel, The Gambler remake with ...

Charlize Theron is getting ready to get her scare on with a new Scott Derrickson film based on Dutch horror thriller Zwart Water, which will see her as both producer and star.
Zwart Water, which was renamed Two Eyes Staring when it went international last year, tells the story of a nine-year-old girl that discovers her new friend is actually her mother’s dead twin sister. Theron is set to play the mother, described as “not quite right in the head.” Sheesh! If she’s not right now, I can’t imagine how she’ll be after she finds out her baby girl is playing with her dead sister.
Derrickson, the writer/director behind The Exorcism of Emily Rose, co-wrote the script with Emily Rose collaborator Paul Boardman.

One of the films to play Fantastic Fest in Austin last month was the Dutch ghost story thriller Zwart Water, aka Two Eyes Staring. Germain wasn't thrilled with the film, calling it a good story that wasn't handled well. It's one that sounds like prime material for a remake, and indeed that is something that is already in motion. Even as the film played Fantastic Fest, the remake rights were in the hands of Charlize Theron's production company. Now The Exorcism of Emily Rose writer/director Scott Derrickson has been hired to co-write and direct the remake, which will star Theron.THR [1] says that Theron's company, Denver and Delilah Films, has tapped Derrickson and his Emily Rose co-writer Paul Boardman to write, and Derrickson will direct. The film is about "a nine-year girl old who discovers that her new friend is not only sinister but also is her mother's dead twin.

Charlize Theron is diving deep into genre projects these days, already onboard high-profile upcoming flicks such as Ridley Scott's Prometheus and playing the Evil Queen in Snow White and the Huntsman. Now she's adding another one to the docket: according to the The Hollywood Reporter she will star in and produce a remake of the Dutch horror movie Zwart Water, which was retitled Two Eyes Staring for its international release. Theron's Denver and Delilah Films picked up the remake rights to Zwart Water last year and hired the Exorcism of Emily Rose team of Scott Derrickson and Paul Boardman to write the script. Its not a surprise that it is a role that Shia Labeouf was probably tired of. Now it looks like he is ready to branch out to other roles. Besides starring in next years The Wettest Country in the World, Labeouf will appear in Gil Kenan’s love story titled A Giant. Charlize Theron’s planned remake of the Dutch horror flick “Two Eyes Staring” (aka “Zwart Water”) has found its director in Scott Derrickson, director of “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” and “The Day the Earth Stood Still”, as well as the upcoming “Goliath”. (Yeah, we’ll pretend he never directed “The Day the Earth Stood Still” and move on along…) Theron snapped up the remake rights to the film back in 2010, with plans to remake it and star, and it looks like she’s making progress on both fronts. Theron would play the mother of a nine-year girl old whose new friend turns out to be the ghost of her mother’s twin sister — who happens to be dead. That’s…not so good. Her father, meanwhile, begins to suspect that all might not be right with his wife. Oh, really? Genius, this guy. It’s a juicy role, to be sure,...

The original Dutch title of this supernatural thriller is Zwart Water (Dark Water), and this is a similar tale to that of the haunted apartment building in the original Japanese film. I don't think this is a remake, there is enough changed about the film to assume that it isn't, but it does use some of the same tools. Two Eyes Staring is really nothing too special. The pace is far too contemplative to really inject any adrenaline into the viewer, and there is very little in the way of genuine fright in the film, so I'm left feeling a bit confused as to what I've just witnessed. Is it horror? Is it a thriller? Supernatural thriller? Was it supposed to be scary? I don't...

You have to go all the way back to 1997's The Devil's Advocate to find a horror movie on Charlize Theron's CV (unless you count Reindeer Games). London -- Oscar winner Charlize Theron has proffered a Dutch wink to remake rights to writer/director Elbert van Strien's "Two Eyes Staring," a movie originally named "Zwart Water" in the Netherlands.
Theron snapped up remake rights through her production banner Denver & Delilah and is, according to Dutch sources, meeting "A-list directors" to attach to the remake.
The original Dutch pic, fresh from a circuit of international festival airings including screenings at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, Fantasy Filmfest in Germany and the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival, starred British born Barry Atsma alongside Hadewych Minis, Isabelle Stokkel and Bart Slegers.
Written by van Strien and Paulo van Vliet, "Two Eyes Staring" details the story of a nine-year-old girl who discovers her sinister friend is the ghost of her mother's dead twin.

Two highly-anticipated second feature films from U.S. underground filmmakers will be making their World Premieres all the way over at the 64th annual Edinburgh International Film Festival, which will run for twelve days on June 16-27. The films are Rona Mark’s The Crab and Zach Clark’s Vacation!.
The Crab, which screens on June 21, is the touching story of a verbally abusive man born with two enormous, mutant-like hands; while Vacation!, which screens on June 20, tracks four urban gals let loose in a sunny seaside resort down South.
Both Mark and Clark previously screened their debut features at Eiff. Mark’s Strange Girls screened there in 2008 and Clark’s Modern Love Is Automatic screened in 2009. Both films also ended up as runners-up in Bad Lit’s annual Movie of the Year award, again Strange Girls in 2008 and Modern Love in 2009. Sadly, these two masterpieces are still unavailable on...

With its story of a young family moving to a big old house in the country only to discover a ghost in the attic - a ghost that preys primarily on the family's young daughter - Elbert van Strien's Zwart Water may seem a touch familiar. We've seen this basic story done many times now in locations all around the globe. But, really, when it comes to ghost stories it's all been done before meaning it's not so much about novelty any more, but execution. And Van Strien seems to be doing just fine on that count.
With the Dutch release coming soon the first trailer for the film has arrived, showcasing the handsome visuals, slowly building mood, and a few legitimately disturbing images. Check it below.
