No Safe Havens: Letitia Wright’s Breathtaking Refugee Turn
Frank Berry’s Aisha is the superbly moving record of a Nigerian refugee’s quiet fight for dignity in Ireland’s inhumane Direct Provision system for asylum seekers. Thoroughly-researched but fictional, gently-paced but absorbing, Berry’s affecting narrative is anchored by standout performances from Letitia Wright (The Silent Twins) and Josh O’Connor (Mothering Sunday). Haunted by forces they can’t control, these two unlikely soulmates form an unexpectedly tender bond; by film’s end, they embody a tragic authenticity reminiscent of Italian neorealism. Even though Irish writer/director Berry is known for socially conscious work (2014’s I Used to Live Here and 2017’s Michael Inside), Aisha is far more than an ‘important’ film bolstered by real-world injustice.…...

Aisling Walsh, director, Elizabeth is Missing (2019): As a girl, I’d seen Glenda on screen as Elizabeth in Mary, Queen of Scots and I never thought for a moment I’d get to work with her. It was the greatest privilege of my career.

Movie musical biopics are a beloved Hollywood tradition and one that — unlike erotic thrillers — shows no signs of slowing down.
Over the years we’ve seen Sissy Spacek win an Oscar as Loretta Lynn in “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” Jessica Lange earn a nomination as Patsy Cline in “Sweet Dreams,” and Reese Witherspoon win Best Supporting Actress as June Carter Cash in “Walk the Line.” And that’s just the country music biopics.
Portraying a musical icon is just the next step in an evolving way to showcase triple-threat talent. Jamie Foxx took home the Best Actor Oscar for his transformation into Ray Charles for the 2004 film “Ray.” Joaquin Phoenix showed a new facet to his talent as Johnny Cash in “Walk the Line.” Marion Cotillard burst onto the international scene (and won a Best Actress Oscar) as Edith Piaf in “La Vie En Rose,” and more recently Rami Malek and...

Neon, Double Agent and Film4 are partnering to co-finance and exec produce 2073, a new documentary from Academy Award and BAFTA-winning director Asif Kapadia (Amy).
2073 is billed as a genre-bending thriller set in a dystopian future, which will tackle some of the biggest challenges imperiling our future. The project is inspired by Chris Marker’s iconic 1962 featurette La Jetée — about a time traveler who risks his life to change the course of history and save the future of humanity — which previously served as the basis for Terry Gilliam’s sci-fi pic 12 Monkeys, with Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt.
Kapadia and George Chignell are producing. Davis Guggenheim, Nicole Stott and Jonathan Silberberg will exec produce on behalf of Concordia Studio, alongside Riz Ahmed’s Left Handed Films.
Said Kapadia: “I want to make an epic about the state of the world, using elements of science fiction as a lens through which...

As we revealed earlier this year, the film will tell the story of world-renowned journalist and human rights activist Anna Politkovskaya (Peake), who went from being a local print journalist to braving the Chechen killing fields and exposing Russian state corruption under Vladimir Putin. She refused to give up reporting on the war in Chechnya despite numerous acts of intimidation and violence, including being poisoned. She was ultimately murdered in the elevator of her block of flats and it remains unclear who paid for the contract killing.

HBO Max is adapting Netflix's "The Staircase" documentary and turning it into a scripted TV series. The limited series - starring Colin Firth, Toni Collette, Michael Stuhlbarg, Juliette Binoche, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sophie Turner, Parker Posey, and Odessa Young - explores the mysterious death of Kathleen Peterson in 2001 and the subsequent confounding murder trial of her husband, Michael Peterson.
Young - whom you may know from "Mothering Sunday," "The Daughter," and "Looking For Grace" - plays one of Michael's adopted daughters, Martha Ratliff. She was immediately attracted to the project after reading the script and watching the original Netflix documentary. "I had heard the legends of the Michael Peterson case, 'The Staircase,' the author who had murdered his wife, and then been released from prison on a technicality," Young tells Popsugar. "I'd heard of the big absurd parts of the case before, but...

What looks at first like period drama, a steamy “Downton Abbey,” set in England in the wake of World War I, morphs into something deeper and more far-reaching, as Mothering Sunday follows the changing life of a young maid, tracing the awful legacy of that devastating war and the transformations it wrought, and also depicting a literary awakening and three stages in an artist’s life.
Mothering Sunday starts out in1924 at a British country manor house on Mother’s Day, known there as Mothering Sunday, when aristocrats traditionally gave their servants the day off to visit their mothers. Young Jane Fairchild (Odessa Young) was raised in an orphanage so she has no mother to visit. However, she has other, secret plans, to visit her lover,...

It’s a rare Sunday when three original films debut with strong grosses. Since Covid devastated theaters, it is a first.
Paramount’s “The Lost City” starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum in a latter-day “Romancing the Stone” opened with $31 million, dislodging still-strong “The Batman” from #1. The $70 million production continues Paramount’s 10-month string of successful openings of mid- to lower-budget releases that prosper in theaters, most with a window of 45 days or longer.
“The Lost City” is also the first Covid film to open at this level that was propelled by both females (61 percent) and older (about half over 35) viewers. That’s no small deal.
It also means Channing Tatum had two strong films (along with “Dog”) in less than two months. There’s an obvious lesson here that goes to the core of what is missing from so many studio films. Put two attractive actors in a story-driven original film,...

Everything Everywhere All At Once grossed over half a million dollars on 10 screens in NYC, LA and San Francisco for a hefty $50,965 per-screen-average — a number rarely seen since the pre-Covid old days of theatrical releases and the biggest of the year so far. The mind-melding Michelle Yeoh-starrer directed by the Daniels (Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) played to sold out crowds including Imax engagements.
It moves to 30 to 50 screens next weekend ahead of a nationwide expansion April 8. The film marks A24’s Imax debut. It’s planning a March 30 big screen event across top markets with special appearances by cast and crew.
This is A24’s best launch since Uncut Gems (2019) and one of its best ever. It’s the biggest limited opening 2022, and the third highest per screen average since 2019. The sci-fi drama scores 97% with critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Exit polls were in the 90’s across...

The new spark of life that the specialty box office saw last weekend has found more momentum this weekend with the release of A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which was released in 10 theaters this weekend and has earned the best per theater average of any film since “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”
A24 reported an estimated total of $509,659 for an average of just under $51,000 for the weekend. By comparison, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” had a per screen average of just under $60,000 thanks to its historic $260 million opening in wide release in December.
Meanwhile, A24 opted to take the traditional path with a platform launch for “Everything Everywhere” after the film won overwhelming acclaim from its premiere at SXSW in Austin. The result is the best average for a limited release film since MGM’s Oscar contender “Licorice Pizza” earned $55,832 during its initial New York/Los Angeles run in early December.
