Luc Besson's "The Fifth Element" certainly has one of the most eclectic casts of any '90s blockbuster. On one hand, you have a variety of established actors. Then-beloved action hero Bruce Willis was the film's centerpiece, propped by British thespians like Gary Oldman and Ian Holm, both of whom had garnered recognition in major Hollywood blockbusters. On the other hand, you have a variety of unknown variables: Milla Jovovich, a young Russian model just getting her start on film; Chris Tucker, a hyperactive comedian slowly on the rise after "Friday," which also just so happened to feature "Fifth Element" co-star Tommy "Tiny" Lister Jr., an actor-turned-wrestler-turned-actor-again. Besson's call sheet of obscure talents goes on and on. However, it is exactly the director's ethno-galactically diverse, if often aesthetically disparate, vision for the film that makes the cast of "The Fifth Element" fit surprisingly well together.

Who on earth would want to release a horror movie in November?! That’s like showing up to Thanksgiving dinner on a full stomach or going for a jog after a marathon. Surely, studios don’t purposefully plan to release their movie during the four weeks After the entire world is consumed with the dead, dying, maimed and dismembered, right? The calendar says spooky season is over (although you and I know differently) and as the grumpy neighbor in Halloween II says, the general audience has “been trick or treated to death” by October’s end.
On the contrary, November Horror has had some shockingly great runs over the years. And maybe there’s a method to the madness. If horror fans are lucky, October is packed tighter than a Black Friday sale at Target during a live in store Taylor Swift performance. Why not wait a couple of weeks...

Aliens are never far from the pop culture hive mind. It makes sense that audiences would turn to the skies in the 21st century: a time of existential ennui that’s left many screaming for escape and wondering “What else?” But where the enduring nostalgia of “E.T.” or the effortless charm of “Earth Girls Are Easy” might have made emotional contact in the past, a burning need to really feel something has festered.
The scariest alien movies terrify in many of the same ways the scariest earth-bound horror movies do: building (and sometimes killing) likable characters; producing otherworldly visual displays with seriously grim implications; getting the jump scares, if applicable, timed just right; and daring to put the unimaginably terrible on screen. Alien flicks further distinguish themselves through the subgenre’s unparalleled ability to explore the unknown, conjuring up heinous fates for humans so sweepingly sadistic few other films can attempt them.

(Welcome to Scariest Scene Ever, a column dedicated to the most pulse-pounding moments in horror with your tour guides, horror experts Chris Evangelista and Matt Donato. In this edition, Matt has a close encounter of "The Fourth Kind.")
With the release of Brian Duffield's "No One Will Save You" on Hulu this week, I wanted to revisit a freaky alien abduction flick that doesn't get enough attention. Olatunde Osunsanmi's faux documentary thriller "The Fourth Kind" approaches extraterrestrial horror from both an inquisitive and frightening angle by treating the story as real. Osunsanmi uses Alaskian isolation as a backdrop for otherworldly horror, preying on our fears of little green men who the government just confessed do exist. I can't even say aliens tie into fears of the unknown anymore. What a world!

We have the highlights of what's coming and going from HBO Now and HBO Go in March 2020.
March 2020 is an extremely HBO month for HBO.
What we mean by that is that the list of new releases for the month contain a lot of the hallmarks of the HBO brand that the network has built over the years. There is the third season of an expensive and popular sci-fi series with Westworld season 3 premiering on March 15. Then there's also the requisite new David Simon series when Philip Roth adaptation The Plot Against America premieres on March 16.
If that weren't enough, March 2020 sees the arrival of a big ticket superhero movie with X-Men: Dark Phoenix arriving on March 21. It's not a good big ticket superhero movie, but still! You may want to rewatch it all the same. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw is a sort of superhero movie itself.

Raphael Coleman, who starred alongside Emma Thompson and Colin Firth in the 2005 film “Nanny McPhee,” died on Friday after collapsing on a run. He was 25 years old.
The British actor appeared in three feature films, “It’s Alive” and “The Fourth Kind” in 2009. He then studied zoology at the University of Manchester before dedicating himself to activism, working with the environmental movement Extinction Rebellion to advocate for wildlife conservation.
Liz Jensen confirmed the news over social media. “Rest in peace my beloved son Raphael Coleman, aka Iggy Fox,” she said. “He died doing what he loved, working for the noblest cause of all. His family could not be prouder. Let’s celebrate all he achieved in his short life and cherish his legacy.”
Jensen also shared an essay that Coleman had written for Extinction Rebellion titled “This is Why I Rebel.” In his writing, Coleman describes the obligation he feels toward the movement.

Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen reboot is picking up speed, filling out its cast, and moving closer to production, for an expected 2018 release. We already know that David Harbour (Stranger Things) will star as Hellboy, Ian McShane (Deadwood, American Gods) will play his adoptive father, Professor Trevor "Broom" Bruttenholm, and Neil Marshall (Game of Thrones, The Descent) will direct. Deadline is reporting that Milla Jovovich (The Fifth Element, Resident Evil) is in final talks to play the (supposed) villain, the Blood Queen herself.
Based on recent fan and media reactions, the R-rated reboot has been making all the right moves and generating a lot of excitement. So, this latest news is either spectacular or horrible, depending upon your love/hate for Jovovich's work. It's a fair concern, because she was great in The Fifth Element and A Perfect Getaway (a really taut action-thriller), but she was awful in Ultraviolet and The Fourth Kind.

“You don’t have to have a true story to make a true story movie.”
Noah Hawley’s acclaimed midwestern crime anthology Fargo returns to FX this week, along with my enthusiasm for saying oh yah and you betcha to anyone with the gall to speak to me when I would rather be watching Fargo. In my defence there are not one, but two, gloriously bad Ewan McGregor wigs. Truly, Hawley is doing the Lord’s work. Season three is set in the not too distant past of 2010, and follows the tried-and-true template of a ridiculously stacked ensemble of endearing (and woefully misguided) ne’er do wells gradually bungling their way into a shit show of their own design. As with each of the previous installments, least of all the Coen Brothers’ original 1996 film, the opening of this week’s episode features the following superimposed text:

Chucky’s back and better than ever… Mezco Toyz presents their newest Chucky doll based on his likeness in the first Child’s Play movie. Also: Wizard World and Crypt TV’s eight-city video showcase, Mondo’s Cronenberg vinyls, the Screamfest 2016 announcement, and over 10 photos from Shortwave.
Photos of Mezco Toyz’s New Chucky Doll: From Mezco Toyz: “Unlike the scarred and battle-damaged look Chucky normally bears (people have tried to destroy him in six films so far), this version represents the cleaner, earlier Chucky. His trademark outfit is un-slashed, his face is not yet mauled.
Just as he did in his films, Chucky has lots to say from his trademark “My name is Chucky” to far more sinister phrases.
The star of the Child’S Play films, Chucky stands fifteen inches tall and features real cloth Good Guys clothing, eleven points of articulation, his trademark orange hair and realistic glass-like eyes.

Icelandic cinema scored one more victory at the 2016 Harpa Awards, which took place at the Nordic Embassies during Berlinale on February 15, 2016. Composer Atli Örvarsson won the award for Best Film Score for the Icelandic film "Rams," while Johann Johannson took home the Honorary Award.
“The award for Best Film Score goes to a man with a unique sound,” said the jury who consisted of Thomas Robsahm, Konrad Sommermeyer and Christineauf der Haar. “The accordion perfectly matches the loneliness, the nature and the sound of the sheep calling out for each other - the bleating. The music, the atmosphere and the pictures fit perfectly together. It feels as if the director and the composer really are in close contact – and telling their story together.”
Grímur Hákonarson's "Rams" took home the Un Certain Regard Award at last year's Cannes Film Festival and has since screened at numerous festivals around the world charming critics and audiences alike. Cohen Media Group released the film stateside earlier this month.

Atli has worked with Hans Zimmer in Los Angeles for a number of years. Since moving back to his original hometown Akureyri in northern Iceland, he has scored a number of Hollywood films and TV series as well as Icelandic films. The film "Rams" was coincidentally shot in the remote countryside village where his mother grew up and is based on a true story about two elderly brothers living on the same farm and leading a very rural countryside life - but have not spoken to each other for many decades. Atli is the son of Iceland´s most distinguished accordionist Örvar Kristánsson who passed away last year. Atli created the score to a large degree using his father’s old accordion which is heavily featured in the score.
Atli’s credits include orchestrating and writing music for some of Hollywood’s biggest projects, including the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series. He has contributed music to films from "Angels and Demons" to "The Holiday. As a composer, Atli Örvarsson displays musical diversity throughout his action-film scores in "The Eagle," "Vantage Point," "Babylon A.D.," the Morgan Freeman caper "Thick as Thieves," "The Fourth Kind," and the Nicolas Cage medieval fantasy "Season of the Witch." Atli’s most recent credits include "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones," the dark and edgy film "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters," the drama/thriller "A Single Shot" starring Sam Rockwell, the hit NBC series "Chicago Fire" and "Chicago Pd," and working with Hans Zimmer to contribute music to the Zack Snyder's Superman reinstallment "Man of Steel."
The Harpa Awards were invented in 2009. The aim was to put a spotlight on Nordic talent, skills and know-how and to promote the great Nordic film talents in music and acting for the international film industry and thereby strengthening the opportunities for cooperation between the Nordic countries and the international film market. Olatunde Osunsanmi ("The Fourth Kind" starring Milla Jovovich") has been tapped to direct "The Twisted," a thriller from Scott Free Productions' new movie division, "Ridley Scott Presents." Osunsanmi will direct from a screenplay penned by Ari Schlossberg about a troubled child psychologist and a cameraman sent in to interview children at an isolated orphanage in Sierra Nevada following reports of strange occurrences. They expect to find reasonable causes, but when the children take a terrifying and twisted turn for the worse, the pair start to wonder if it's the adults who are actually in danger. Ridley Scott launched his new genre...

Despite such bland, generic branding, the Vicious Brothers’ Extraterrestrial shies away from repeating the same mistakes of their ambitiously convoluted last film, Grave Encounters 2, by reaching for a fast-paced, fun-filled watch that’s more in line with their original Grave Encounters. Alien invasion movies have been recycled time and time again – a statement also easily said about found-footage – but the Vicious Brothers decide instead to go the route of reinvention. Why not just have a ton of fun playing with other-worldly stereotypes? Unfortunately there’s no reward without risk, as this haunting chase won’t go down in history, but if you’re looking for a confident horror flick about gangly grey men, strap in and hold on. The ride may be bumpy, but enough flashing lights and shadowy figures distract from a passable simplicity – or maybe I was just brainwashed to believe as much?

We told you about Joston Theney's sequel to his flick Axeman, entitled Axeman 2: Overkill, a few weeks back; and right now we have an exclusive interview with star Rachel Reilly ("Big Brother," "The Amazing Race") to share.
Dread Central: Mum's been the word with the producers, Joston "El Rey" Theney and Dr. Christopher Otiko, so. What can you tell us about the film?
Rachel Reilly: The film is reminiscent of a 1980s slasher film. It has a witty script and is really fun, action-packed, and of course scary. You're going to laugh and have to cover your eyes! It's everything you want in a horror flick! They take the killings to a whole new level.
DC: You play "Breaker" in the film. What can you tell us about the character? How does she fit into this world?
Rr: Breaker is one badass chic whose only loyalty is to a paycheck!

Good news, Netflix’s very funny looking original animated show BoJack Horseman featuring the voices of Will Arnett, Aaron Paul and Alison Brie will appear on Netflix on Friday 22nd August just in time to binge watch over the bank holiday weekend.
From what I have seen so far it looks promising but then so did Hemlock Grove. Expect a full report next week. In related news, Netflix have announced a whole slate of stand-up comedy exclusive to its service after the success of the recent Aziz Ansari special. So the likes of Chelsea Handler, Jim Jefferies, Bill Cosby, Bill Burr and Chelsea Peretti will be adding stand up shows to streaming between now and December. I have only heard of a couple of these acts but there again one of the best things to do with an hour to spare is browse Netflix for its plentiful supply of stand-up...

Falling Skies emerges from this week's episode a leaner, meaner show. Here's Ron's review...
This review contains spoilers.
4.7 Saturday Night Massacre
Major character purges aren't a thing that Falling Skies indulges in. That's something more for the less positive shows on cable, like your Walking Deads or your Game Of Thrones, which cheerfully—even gleefully—kill off noteworthy characters left and right during the course of a season. Falling Skies isn't that show. Saturday Night Massacre, however, lives up to the title, despite airing on Sunday evening. Talk about major cast changes.
At its core, Falling Skies is a really positive show where characters who mean well generally come out on top. The strong, kind instincts of a man like Tom Mason, history professor turned unlikely general in a guerrilla war, usually work out for him. Not in this case. The daughter he's fought so hard to take care of,...

Angelica Bridges: I don't want to give out too many of the gory details, but I will say they are going for more horror, if that's even possible. They will be taking the "killings" in the film to a whole other level of profoundness! People that usually don't ever cover their eyes while watching horror films will probably be starting a new trend after watching this film.

“Oh My God What Is That?! What Is It!” – I don’t know, stop shaking the camera violently and I’ll tell you!
I’ve been watching a ton of “found footage” lately, not because I’ve furiously been seeking out such subgenre work, but those are the screeners that have been falling into my lap. There’s been a nice variation, from cyber killers to zombies, vampires to the paranormal, but my most recent “found footage” watch branches into different territory – the final frontier. Alien Abduction is exactly that, a recounting of events that end with a camping family being abducted – but it stumbles into every generic “found footage” pitfall along the way. Mix that with my lack of interest in abduction stories, and you’ve got a sci-fi horror flick that’s a dizzying whirl of costumed actors, screaming children, and fuzzy imagery. Until I wake up to...

Mark Fisher disappeared from home in a blinding blue light flash. His friend Seth Hampton was the last person to see him alive. Two years later, a series of atrocious, grisly murders leads Seth to believe that Mark has somehow returned, but changed into something different, strange… not of this world. Mark has indeed become a humanoid alien receptacle for evil – and the last place you should look is in his cellar.
There are times when I sit down to watch a movie that I need to review in which I’m filled with dread, typically because the particular style of film or the (sub) genre doesn’t appeal – found-footage movies being my particular bane. Now I know...

My biggest problem with most alien abduction flicks is that they lack bite. Some lights flicker, eyes might bleed, loud noises screech through the air, but it’s typically a bunch of people levitating or vanishing. Take The Fourth Kind for example – it tries, it really does, but all we’re left with are owl faces and stories of abduction. Almost Human is not that movie, because writer/director Joe Begos brilliantly works the gory thrills of a gleeful slasher movie into a creature-heavy alien story with all the usual abduction trimmings. We get the bright lights and high-pitched screams, but afterwards, Begos gives us oh so much more.
We’ve all heard stories of alien abductions – flashy lights, missing bodies, and unsavory anal probing. This is the case one night while Seth (Graham Skipper) and his buddy are driving to another friend’s house, as Seth is the only...

Many years ago the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup folks had an awesome ad campaign that went like this:
"Hey. you got your peanut butter in my chocolate!" "Hey, you got your chocolate in my peanut butter!" "You're both right! It's two great tastes that taste great together!" The main reason I remember this ancient TV commercial is because I see a lot of horror movies. And I find myself thinking "Hey, you got your Alien in my Silent Hill!" or something similarly silly. I mention all of this nonsense because of a goofy new horror thriller called Evidence, which I'd describe thusly: "Hey, you got your found footage horror film in my boring cop story!" "Hey, you got your boring cop story in my..." You get the point. Rare is the film that feels more like two small movies wedged together, but that's precisely what Evidence is. Wholly familiar, entirely predictable,...

10- The Fourth Kind
Starting the list off at number ten is 2009’s The Fourth Kind. Directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi and starring Milla Jovovich, this movie follows Dr. Abigail Tyler, a psychologist using hypnosis on her patients in Nome, Alaska, in hopes they recall memories of past alien abductions. As the movie progresses, we uncover evidence suggesting it’s not only her patients that have been in contact with the extraterrestrials.
The movie is interesting in its style, perhaps more so than in actual content. The cast kicks off the film by saying they’ll be re-enacting actual events. These “re-enactments” are then followed by what the film claims to be actual footage of events that transpired. While the plot itself may be a bit predictable, the mockumentary mixed with sci-fi thriller gives The Fourth Kind a touch of the plausible.
Just remember to watch it in a closed basement...
