Without a doubt, MUCH better than High School Musical
ANightToRemember7 March 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I was "eh" on this film until I bought the soundtrack for 12 bucks at a local Wal-Mart, and I was surprised to find that the songs were actually not just great, but Spectacular! (Yes, that was cheesy, quiet now). They are actually rock songs you would accidentally find on limewire and fall in love with. They're just plain better.

Nikko (Funk) is a wannabe rock star with his eyes set on the future, but when he is dumped by his band, he meets up with Courtney (Sursok) who invites him to be in their show choir, Spectacular! to win a music competition. But the rival choir, Ta-Da!, has other plans to win the music competition, with Royce (Curtis) and Tammi (Justice) in the lead of the show, and they plan to win for another year. Nikko completely changes what the band once was, but will that be good enough to win? Okay, I won't lie, the situations were not exactly original, but it was pulled off in such an original way. And the acting in this film is incredibly impressive for people this young. Props to Simon Curtis and Tammin Sursok, who I believe made the film. And Nolan Funk's rock voice was what made the film a hit for me. The only thing a bit disappointing was Victoria Justice, who plays her part well, but has about 10 minutes of screen time in this 90 minute movie, and she doesn't really seem like that "bad girl" that Sharpay Evans was in HSM.

The direction is, at most, basic. The editing is decent, and the placing of the songs is great, however, "Everything Can Change" has got to be one of the most boring finales ever done. They just stand there in the studio and sing. I figured it'd be some "You Can't Stop The Beat" or "Hot Honey Rag", and explosive incredible finale! But it wasn't.

All in all, it was a great, entertaining film, and I will be the first in line for the DVD, because it's one heck of a TV movie.

Nothing Terribly Spectacular, But Nice
bkoganbing20 February 2009
Shot in Canada with a mostly Canadian cast, Spectacular! is Nickelodeon's effort to compete with Disney for the High School Musical market. It remains to be seen whether any of the characters come up to the iconic level that the principals of the High School Musical franchise enjoy.

Music class has certainly improved since I was in high school way back in the early part of the Sixties. Nolan Gerard Funk is a would be rock singer whose band gives him the gate and sends his career sputtering into stall. Britney Irvin likes his voice and likes him and wants him to join her jazz choir which do all kinds of choreography and glitz in their work. They're in competition and she thinks his presence could put them over.

Of course when young Funk gets several opportunities to advance his own career and get back with his old girl friend, Tammin Sursok, what choices will he make?

The only difference between this and the first High School Musical film was that Zac Efron had to choose between singing and sports, basketball to be specific. Here it's simply different musical venues, but the conflicts in the young teen mind are the same.

In producing Spectacular!, Nickolodeon will of course be accused of stealing the playbook from Disney's High School Musical which in point of fact they have. There's nothing terribly Spectacular in this film, but its nice enough and the cast is talented enough to put it across.

Now let's see if they become the icons that the High School Musical characters have become.

Spectacular, Great. but not Spectacular. Warning: Spoilers
This movie is great, as I've already pointed out. Its completely different from anything before it. It does not compare to HSM in the way of musicals. Though is well written and perhaps not the best acting, but good enough for a teen drama fest, if you ever had a dream or have one now it really makes you feel better where HSM doesn't. It can hold its own. As long as you give it a chance. There are some really good scenes in it and some nice camera work. but i think what really needs to be looked at is the choreography the dancing in it and how well it ends up working. especially on the rooftop. the song do your own thing is probably what makes this musical. it makes it worth watching just to hear the song. And to see how well it flows in the storyline.

Spectacular fail
chocokitty1115 May 2011
I sat through all 3 High School Musicals, both the Camp Rock movies,Bandslam, and Lemonade Mouth. I even sat through Mean Girls 2. It was painful, but I managed to do it. This movie, however, I had to stop watching in the middle of it. At first, the movie was stupid yet enjoyable. Niko had some amusing snarky comments. However, after the first half an hour you realize that the characters are incredibly annoying. Niko is an egotistical whiny douche bag, and Courtney is a controlling selfish bitch. The plot is predictable and the acting is painful to watch. I think I need to stop watching these awful TV movie musicals. If you want to watch a good movie musical, go to your local movie rental and pick up Grease, Cry Baby, Rent, Chicago, Rocky Horror Picture Show, or Dream Girls. Don't watch some cheap squeaky clean garbage made by a kid's network. I give it a two because I'm in a good mood.

Nothing New, But Not Horrible Either
zachoskins18 February 2009
Spectacular! has been called Nickelodeon's answer to "High School Musical", and indeed seems to be aimed at the same audience. I've been told that it resembles another Disney TV-musical "Camp Rock" as well.

Putting comparisons aside, I actually didn't hate "Spectacular!". It was a fairly well done musical with enjoyable music, some good acting and done without a Disney-sized budget. Nolan Gerard Funk plays cool, tough-acting rocker Nikko, with almost the right amount of attitude. Tammin Sursok plays spunky, energetic Courtney, who recruits Funk's character to her "show-choir", thus setting the stage for the movies (surprisingly numerous) pop-rock numbers.

Tammin Sursok is much more enjoyable to watch than blah-bland HSM actress Vannessa Hudgens. Sursok's energetic portrayal steals the show away from the good, but not 'spectacular' Nolan Gerard Funk. Funk is not unattractive, and has a very different appeal than Zac Efron, with a more rocker-ish way about him. Victoria Justice (of "Zoey 101" fame), also has a role in this movie, and does a good job of portraying the movies "villain", Tami.

The songs are not quite as catchy as the original High School Musical's were (which isn't necessarily a bad thing), but have there own appeal to them. The way that the songs are executed is more believable than HSM's were (though still unavoidably cheesy), being performance based rather than "randomly start singing about what we're thinking"-based.

Spectacular seems a little more grown up than High School Musical is, with a grungy (yet still candy-coated) feel to it that will likely be more interesting to older viewers (teenagers).

It's not for everybody, but Spectacular is a quick, enjoyable film that will likely find an audience with those who didn't care for High School Musical.

Spectacular! NO!
neffkaine1 October 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Okay so lets start at the beginning that Victoria Justice and Avon Jogia are in this movie and you think "Hay maybe they will be funny and sing well." No the songs are bad in the beginning and they just keep going down. But lets start with the charters. Five year old's on crack could have prouder a better set of charters the lead who is playing a "Rocker" is stereo typical along with Avon s character and basically every one else in this film so they could have basically left out about 98% of the people and still had a alright movie. then you have to deal with the repetitive story line you watch ten minuets of this move and you can call every thing that will happen. ow they will fall in love and Shes going to dump him after they win and of course he will leave his dreams and go back to a Dumb concert at the last minute to try to win it for them(witch they don't). but there was one spot that actually surprised me when there teacher reveled he was a rock star that quit his old band and became a public school teacher (Ya right). This show is a mutant offspring of Victorious and Glee Plus throw in HSM. I love Victoria and Avon and Victorious and Glee are great shows but this movie was just really bad with no moments that actually made you wont to continue to watch it. I counted to watch just to hear Victoria Sing two auto tuned songs and apparently see Avon beat box in the end game. but after all that what disappointing me the most about this movie is that it is 90 something minutes long. Most people could easily seal up whats happening in about 30 tops. if you don't agree watch the movie again and just barley try to look for these things and you'll find them. this "Movie" is nothing short of the worst Nick movie ever. It probably could have been better from Victoria's charter's point of view or maybe anyone Else. In the end the movie provides little satisfactions on there short jornney with no twists or turns that you cant figure out. THIS MOVIE SUCKS!

Spectacular!
supervolt2surge28 February 2009
Nothing like HSM. It's a musical, but it's completely different. Show Choir, sounded really stupid before watching, but I think the point gets made, to each their own. Even better, when different tastes and talents mix together for one big Spectacular! It's a great storyline, the kind we need more of. It wasn't corny or stupid. Well, the cow costumes were "lame." I'll admit that one. One comparison though, the writer of this movie, enjoyed the final stage performance on Sister Act II. It works though. It was different enough from what's already been done, to have made it worth watching. And it would be worth it for Nickelodeon to make a Spectacular 2!

Good Music Spoke for the Movie
ronnel21952 July 2009
The thing with movies characterized by music and performing arts is that its essence depends largely on the relevance and the timing of its performances in relation to a particular issue in the story. Spectacular! may be underrated and under-appreciated but a deeper analysis of the film may reveal quite a degree of sense and heart in it lying behind its seeming superficiality.

The movie can be summarized through its four (4) songs strategically performed in different parts of the story.

The first song contains lines such as "I'm living my life just the way I like", "Don't tell me what I got to do, who I wanna be 'coz it's me who'll choose", "No more rules coz I just don't have the time", "I wanna go crazy and no one's gonna stop me." As it was performed, we are practically introduced to the band singer, Niko, a teenager aspiring to be a recording star who got dumped by his own band and girlfriend at the same night. Soon, however, he was recruited by a performing choir leader who has been accustomed to performing inside a 'box', so to speak, and to living strictly by the rules.

Conflicting perspective somehow made it quite a deal for Niko. Nothing natural, however, can be hidden for long. Soon, his outlook was discovered and surprisingly appreciated by the choir members. In fact, he started teaching the choir members new dance steps for a change.

Somewhere at the middle of the movie, another song was sung containing lines such as, "For the first time, I realize something I didn't see before; for the first time, looking in your eyes, suddenly, there's so much more; something, we both feel inside, for the first time". At this point, we are drawn to the idea that Niko finally and officially got hooked into the performing choir as he started introducing new Spectacular traditions. With the choir members at his back, he actually began sharing in their dream of winning and soaring to heights. He, somehow, forgot his former band and his own aspiration and became one with the new group.

The third song is the group's entry to the national competition containing lines such as, "You give me something to believe in after all we've been through; the love you gave, it all comes back to you", "… and here with you is where I'm meant to be". As in any other group endeavoring to soar, unpleasant things sometimes happen, test of character, difficult choices to be made, truth uncovered during the worst of circumstances, break ups. Good thing is that people are almost always drawn to where their heart is. Realizing that he taught the group something new to believe in and that it's heartless to just abandon and fail them after what they've been through, Niko made the most risky decision in his lifetime.

Little did Niko knew that this unselfish act would be greatly rewarded. As he soared in his newfound career, even the ones around him who lost their radiance found their way to reinvent themselves and soar with him.

The last song is the end credits song containing lines such as, "Coz everything can change when you least expect it", "Can't stop what you can't control, gotta learn how to just let go", "some things turn out much better the way it is with us". It's practically a good summary and I guess everything that happened in the story already speak for themselves…*

Not absolutely Spectacular! but still enjoyable
greengrapey13 March 2009
Warning: Spoilers
When I first saw an ad for this movie,I wasn't that excited. But I gradually started to get more and more excited.I didn't set my expectations to high, because when I set high expectations on Camp Rock I just got disappointment instead. But once I heard the soundtrack,it was nothing like I expected. The songs were different from High School Muiscal&Camp Rock songs. They were very addictive. The only thing that was disappointing was the finale,Everything Can Change. It's a good song, but the scene was just them singing in a studio.I think they should have had a more bigger finale, maybe a scene between Courtney and Nikko then a song? But all in all,it was enjoyable and it was definitely more than I expected.I will definitely buy the DVD as soon as it comes out.

Not quite 'Spectuacular' but entertaining enough
Lily-3218 February 2009
Warning: Spoilers
So I already knew I was going in with high expectations. I can't help myself when I get excited for something. And while this movie didn't meet those expectations, I still enjoyed it and will enjoy it again through future viewings. The story seems a bit empty and disjointed and the resolution leaves something to be desired but you can tell what they're trying to accomplish with this little flick.

I gave it a higher rating probably than the actual quality deserves simply because I could watch and enjoy without worrying about the content found all over TV elsewhere. It was actually more tame than I was expecting from a Nickelodeon movie - they tend to push the limits Disney Channel doesn't - but they held back this time and it worked.

It's not the best movie ever made and if you HAVE to compare it to HSM - which you shouldn't, but many will - then maybe it's not quite up to that par. But it's enjoyable in it's own right.

And anyone who was every in show choir - as I was once upon a long ago - then maybe you'll get a nice little trip down memory lane.

The Next High School Musical?
superneptunechick22 February 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Spectacular! is Nickelodeon's attempt to compete with Disney for the High School Musical franchise. If you think it won't live up to the title.....

Guess again! Spectacular! is an amazing movie about Nikko Alexander (Nolan Gerard Funk), a wannabe rock star whose band gives him the boot. Watching the scene behind the venue is Courtney Lane (Tammin Sursok) who, minutes later, offers him a position in her school sponsored group, Spectacular! Nikko formally says "I'll think about it" upon her offer to check them out at the county fair the next day. When he does, he realizes, their rival group, Ta-Da--lead by Tammi Dyeson (Victoria Justice) and former Spectacular! member, Royce du Lac (Simon Curtis)--is much better and declines her offer.

After a meeting with a music producer, Nikko agrees to join Spectacular! after now having to convince Courtney. The rest of the journey is filled with catchy tunes and rough turns for Nikko and Courtney when several different complications pop upon along their way to the Nationals competition.

This movie is better than High School Musical in my opinion. As a High School Musical lover, it takes a lot out of me to say that, but it is the truth. It is an amazing production. The music will be engraved in your head and it will be hard to extract yourself from the sight of the movie. 10 out of 10 on this movie. Nickelodeon definitely lived up to Disney's level.
