Superman and Lois has me impressed so far. I'm surprised how much I'm enjoying it. It's not a perfect show by any means, but it's a show about a family, which is the exact show we need right now with the world still in quarantine.
Starting off with the negatives, the twins teen angst has a shelf life to it. At the very least, the angst or anger or whatever is understandable on their ends FOR NOW. I can see this turning into an Iris West-Allen situation where we're hearing "we are Superman" every other episode. For now, it's not that bad though. As long as the outbursts from these two remain realistic reactions to the events happening in their lives, I will remain cautiously optimistic that this will still be bearable. Their lives are messy and complicated, and that's how high school is supposed to be! Still, something to keep in mind about maybe tuning this down in the coming weeks.
As for the villain plan this week, we're learning a bit more about Edge's big scheme, but it's still ambiguous as it should be. Obviously, he's giving humans kryptonian abilities, but why? For what purpose? Obviously it's nothing good, but it's unknown for now, which I like. Not much more on the Edge front except that this week. I have a feeling next week will be bigger.
We got more Lex this week, and I'm excited! I've been on board with this new Lex since WEEK ONE! We're getting little snippets of his history every time we see him, and it totally works. Where in week two we learned that he served in the military with Samuel Lane, this week we learned that he was with Lois. Not sure why Sam would allow that since he barely allows it with frickin Superman, but this show hasn't had many noticeable missteps yet, so I'm willing to forgive it. I can see this new Lex going the way of Injustice Superman maybe, but that might just be me fanboying. I did like him trying to get closer to Lois in this episode too. She's apprehensive of him, obviously, but I have a feeling this dynamic can be explored further, and will probably develop into something down the road. Maybe we'll get a scene at the end of next week where she asks his name and he says...
Hang on, what do we call this new Lex? Obviously, he can't go by Lex since, you know, Jon Cryer's Lex still exists in this universe. Maybe he goes by Alex? Alexander? Maybe Xander? He looks like a "Xander" to me. Could be fun to toy around with his name a bit. Have some fun with it, writers! Go crazy! Just not too crazy, please? I trust ya, but you gotta make it reasonable.
Tyler Hoechlin is still amazing as Clark and Superman. He's a total nerd, and I love it! Seriously, you have no idea how cool it is for SUPERMAN to have nerd face! Elizabeth Tulloch is also proving to be a capable Lois Lane. I wasn't originally sold since she appears to look a bit older than Tyler Hoechlin, but she's growing on me pretty fast. The family drama and dynamic is well handled thus far, and I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would.
I also liked all the stuff with Young Clark. Dylan Kingwell absolutely looks like a young Tyler Hoechlin, so the casting department earned their paychecks this week. Seeing Young Clark dealing with the dilemma of growing up and moving out of Smallville was heartbreaking, and the flashbacks were spliced into the episode really well. I got Arrow season one vibes it was done so well. I'm not saying we should make this the norm, but I'm saying that it worked this week.
Episode overall felt a bit filler-y, but it was bearable since all the "filler" was character work and plot stuff. So I guess there isn't actually any filler. I don't know why I said that. This one was great! Solid 9/10! Can't wait for next week!
Oh, the show's going on hiatus? For how long? TWO MONTHS?? Okay, what's it being replaced with? SUPERGIRL?? BECAUSE GOD FORBID WE HAVE TWO KRYPTONIAN LEAD SHOWS ON AT THE SAME TIME, HUH CW??
