A grotesque caricature of the family of our time including drama, humor and silly messes
ma-cortes1 December 2022
¨Animales de compañia¨boasts a nice cast , such as : Miguel Rellán, Mireia Ros, María Botto, Nancho Novo, Javier Pereira, Francisco Boira and Cristina Alcázar . Rafa is turning 65 and, at his age, he knows very well that things always turn out worse than expected . On occasion of the 65th birthday of Rafa (Miguel Rellán) , his family formed by wife (Mireia Ross) , two daughters (Maria Botto, Cristina Alcázar) and a son (Javier Pereira) get together to celebrate his birthday . A series of clashes occurs due to old personal feuds among its members. His eldest daughter does not stop putting obstacles on the middle one , and suddenly the rebel son that sort of urban tribe shows up , while his wife pretends all the time that they are a perfect family.

It shows a family of middle-high social status with South American maid included in which absolutely conventional and conservative children mix with other offspring of artistic hobbies and others with alternative tendencies. The quality of the performers raises the proposal above the limitations of a dreary script that works against its own aspirations, supported by a functional and correct staging , though really claustrophobic . The plot isn't out of time , that's why it will not lose its validity because humor well done is timeless . It mercilessly presents the most ridiculous situations just like a serpent escapes while crawling here and there through the apartment . Finally, it raises the permanence in the home of adults who act as children after their twenties , as well as the reasons that unite or distance this group of people who form this peculiar family.

¨Companion Animals¨or ¨Animales de compañia¨ is an entertaining comedy that is agreeable to watch, with a good dose of humor and very defined characters that we all recognize in our families, with their clichés, defaults and greatness . All the actors are up to the task , although I would highlight the extravagant character of Nacho Novo who could well be inspired by Woody Allen or the deceased writer Francisco Umbral .

¨Companion Animals" provides a sarcastic critique of how fragile family ties can be . The father of the family's birthday serves as the setting for intelligent humor , where everyone ends up removing the mask with which they usually pose . The staging is very limited , a luxury flat and brie images from a garden . And I say "stage" almost in a literal sense, since the whole scenes take place inside a middle-class house that has come to more , that's why the film makes some boring and and tiring . Family made up of "companion animals" of the most varied : expired artist parents , a bourgeois daughter , another alternative that does not fits to her father , the rebellious youngest son without a cause , and some very well-achieved complementary figures, among which the role of Nancho Novo stands out.

It was well photographed by Teo Delgado , a notorious cameraman who has worked in important films and TV series , such as : Altamira , Los herederos de la Tierra , La Catedral del mar , Hit , El nudo, El Guardian de la cueva. The motion picture was regular but professionally directed by Nicolas Muñoz . He is a little successful director who has made a few films and shorts , such as : The Saharan Teacher ,Rewind , En el trastero, No somos nadie , Una tarde , and Animales de compañía (2008) that was nominated in Valladolid International Film Festival 2008 , Nominee Golden Spike Best Film : Nicolás Muñoz Avia. Rating : 5/10 .
