A chameleon on screen and a fashion icon off, Doona Bae has steadily stacked her repertoire over the years, starting with her breakout role in the 2000 comedy Barking Dogs Never Bite, from Oscar-winning director Bong Joon-ho. Since then, Bae has starred in South Korean box office hits like Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, The Host, The Kingdom, and she has worked across the globe, earning critical acclaim in projects like the Japanese offbeat romance Air Doll. Her most recent venture, The Silent Sea, is about a crew of researchers who embark on a mission to the moonand co-stars Gong Yoo and Lee Joon.

How on earth did the makers of The Silent Sea create a crash landing on the moon and make lunar water look so ominous that we had to ask NASA for details? What exactly is CGI and what’s real life? These trade secrets lie with Korean production company Westworld — but like Bae Doona’s Dr. Song, we’re determined to get to the bottom of it.
Founded in 2018, Westworld offers everything from storyboards and concept design to on-set supervision and digital creature development. Fans of Korean television may remember their work on Scripting Your Destiny as well as the Netflix series Sweet Homeand Mystic Pop-up Bar.
For The Silent Sea, Westworld VFX supervisor Kim Shin-chul drew inspiration from blockbuster films Ad Astra and Prometheus, as well as Ridley Scott’s Alien franchise. And to visually reproduce the characteristics and properties of the moon’s surface, the team closely...

Directed by Kohei Yoshino, The Silent Service depicts a gripping story about American bigotry. Kaiji Kawaguchi, the creator of the manga this series is based on, is something of a genius, I must say. I am not surprised that people were genuinely concerned by the idea of Japan he portrayed in the manga. To be fair, the year was 1988 when The Silent Service started publishing, and people were still very uncomfortable with the idea of Japanese remilitarization. While Japan’s stance on moving on from its aggressive past is a debate for another time, I must add that I am fascinated by Kawaguchi’s understanding of global politics. Through its narrative, The Silent Service has addressed the biggest issue in modern-day geopolitics: American hegemony. It serves as a commentary on the Machiavellian attitude of the US government and how it is the greatest deterrent to world peace. The series also...

While I truly appreciate a compelling Korean ‘melo,‘ there are times when the drama becomes overwhelming, hijacking the plot’s integrity. My anticipation for The Moon was sky-high, and with its stellar cast, including popular actors, and my high expectations from the Hallyu industry, I entered with excitement. The realms of space and the future have been thoroughly explored in Korean media, with works like Space Sweepers and The Silent Sea finding success. Personally, I encountered similar concerns with ‘Space Sweeper,’ starring Song Jong-Ki, as I did with The Moon. Both films are excessively lengthy and strain for an emotional impact that ultimately falls short. I understand that this is a cultural denominator, similar to what we have with Indian films, but the criticism still stands when the film becomes tedious and feels overstretched.
The Moon details a space expedition to the moon conducted by Korea’s very own Naro Space Center.

Netflix’s Ted Sarandos Touts the “Power of Korean Storytelling,” Says K-Content Views Are Up Sixfold
Netflix’s co-ceo Ted Sarandos will never forget the day he met director Bong Joon Ho in 2017 to discuss Okja, the sci-fi action drama that became Netflix’s first international film.
“He’s the ultimate master, and he gave me a crash course in Korean cinema. I learned so much,” he said. “And afterwards I had the great privilege to introduce him to Martin Scorsese — one of his heroes. A few years later, director Bong won best director and best picture at the Oscars with Parasite, the same year that Martin Scorsese was nominated. It was amazing to see him go from a fan to a peer.”
On his first visit to Korea since he was named the co-ceo of Netflix, Sarandos elaborated on Netflix’s partnership with Korean creators and the success of K-content abroad.

"Deliverymen must be tough." Netflix has revealed a teaser trailer for another large-scale sci-fi series from Korea, this one titled Black Knight, based on the comic series known as Delivery Knight. South Korea has had a massively successful decade in the world of horror and audiences can't seem to get enough of it. In 2021, "Squid Game" became not only the most popular Netflix original series of all time but a cultural phenomenon that inspired the streaming giant to invest over half a billion dollars into South Korean content. "Train to Busan" director Yeon Sang-ho's supernatural horror series "Hellbound" followed shortly after "Squid Game," with Choi Hang-yong's space thriller, "The Silent Sea," captivating audiences thanks to a script from Park Eun-kyo, the same screenwriter behind Bong Joon-ho's "Mother."

In this weekly data series powered by Parrot Analytics, we look at the top new TV shows of the past week across broadcast, cable and streaming that have premiered in the past 100 days. Netflix’s latest South Korean drama, “All of Us Are Dead,” had a phenomenal debut in its first week since premiering on January 28. For the week of January 29 – February 5, the show had 26.5 times the average series demand, making it the fourth most in-demand new series that debuted in the past 100 days. The demand for “All of Us Are Dead” — a teen thriller set during a zombie apocalypise — underscores the rising interest in K-dramas following the global success of last year’s megahit “Squid Game,” which emerged as the most in-demand new series premiere in 2021 globally. Netflix also had two other Korean series that premiered after “Squid Game” with high demand: “The Silent Sea” and “Hellbound.” Also new...

Still reveling in the global success of “Squid Game” and “Hellbound,” multinational streaming giant Netflix has scheduled the launch of 25 South Korean shows in the current year. The total is the company’s highest to date.
The new slate includes “All of Us Are Dead,” in which zombies invade a high school, and is launching on Jan. 28, 2022; “Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area,” an undated adaptation of the popular Spanish series “Casa de Papel”; and “Seoul Vibe,” an action film in which the adventures of a special-ops team take place against the backdrop of the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games.
The bumper 2022 slate follows Netflix’s commitment early last year to invest close to $500 million in Korean content in calendar 2021, and its parallel leasing of studios near Seoul. The streamer has not unveiled a production spend commitment for 2022.
In a blog posting, Don Kang, Netflix VP of content for Korea, enthused about the 2022 releases.

Where to Watch ‘The Silent Sea’: Netflix
One way that “The Silent Sea” separates itself from its space story counterparts is that it almost never relies on claustrophobia. Even though much of the eight-episode series takes place at a research station on the moon, the interiors have high ceilings, the corridors are relatively wide, and the science labs are well-stocked with a decent amount of space. When this team travels around the lunar base, in search of an important artifact to bring to Earth, you usually get to hear some echoing footsteps in hallways with plenty of space.
So without that sense of feeling trapped hundreds of thousands of miles from home, “The Silent Sea” taps into one other distinct element over the course of its season. Before the group, led by Captain Han (Gong Yoo) and featuring Dr. Song (Bae Doona), leaves on their mission,...

In this weekly data series powered by Parrot Analytics, we look at the top new TV shows of the past week across broadcast, cable and streaming that have premiered in the past 100 days. Disney+’s new “Star Wars” spinoff “The Book of Boba Fett” made its entry into the top 10 ranking in its first week with 25.7 times the average series demand. The series, starring Temuera Morrison as the fan-favorite bounty hunter, released its first episode on December 29, following which it saw a 61% increase in demand, even before the second episode drops on January 5. If this surge in demand is any indicator of what is to come, we expect to see “The Book of Boba Fett” at the top of the charts very soon. Another new entry on the charts is Netflix’s Korean-language sci-fi saga “The Silent Sea,” which boasted an incredible 380% increase in demand just a few days after its December 24 release.

This The Silent Sea article contains Major spoilers for the Netflix k-drama.
Netflix got in one more grim K-drama before Christmas: moon mystery The Silent Sea. Because nothing says Christmas like a spooky, abandoned lunar base! The drama stars Bae Doona as Dr. Song, an astrobiologist-turned-ethologist who agrees to go on a mission to the lunar base where her sister died in order to retrieve a mysterious “sample.”
The story is set in a probably-too-near future in which climate change has rapidly reduced the Earth’s water supply, leaving the surviving population to fight for the unevenly distributed resource. Song is part of a team that includes a doctor, two pilots, some engineers, and several seemingly experienced astronauts, including Captain Han, played by Gong Yoo. While Captain Han is in charge of the mission, Dr. Song has control over any decisions having to do with the unstable and very dangerous “sample.

Comparisons between “The Silent Sea” — Netflix’s latest Korean-language drama — and this fall’s streaming phenom “Squid Game” extend well beyond their common tongue. On “The Silent Sea,” a group of desperate individuals enter into a perilous situation as a last-ditch attempt for salvation; their quest begins with the painful recognition of the economic inequality of their world.
The comparison between the two K-dramas becomes somewhat reductive beyond an initial gloss on themes, however, as the shows differ in genre. While “Squid Game” was a violent thriller, “The Silent Sea” is a sci-fi epic, depicting an attempt to harvest water on the moon to slake the thirst of a desert-ifying Earth. But as the runaway success of “Squid Game” indicated, more powerfully than ever, there’s a global audience for entertainment with aggressively underscored themes that transcend language.

"We need to do what we're told, so focus on the mission." Netflix has debuted the full-length official trailer for a mysterious Korean sci-fi series titled The Silent Sea, arriving on Netflix this month. Set in the future, when the planet suffers from a lack of food & water. Yoon Jae is a soldier for the space agency. He is selected for a team to travel to the moon. Their mission is to find a mysterious sample from an abandoned research station. During a perilous 24-hour mission on the moon, they try to retrieve samples from a research facility steeped in classified secrets. But one by one, they start to end up dead...
