José María Villa was born in the municipality of Sopetrán - Antioquia, on October 18, 1850. He entered the School of Arts and Crafts of Medellín and then the School of Engineering of the University of Antioquia. Later, thanks to the support of Pedro Justo Berrio, governor of Antioquia, he traveled to the United States and enrolled at the Stevens Institute in Hoboken, New Jersey.

Pedro Nel Gómez Agudelo was an engineer, urban planner, philosopher, sculptor and Colombian muralist. He studied painting in France and Holland, executed several oil works: Anatomy Lesson, The Amazonomaquias, The Martyrdom of St. Jerome, Miss Inoccenti and others; works that were exhibited in Rome two years later.
