Exclusive: Sugar23 has signed Charlie Tahan, the actor, writer, and director best known for his breakout starring role on Netflix’s Ozark, for management.
For a refresher, the Emmy-winning Ozark follows the seemingly ordinary financial planner, Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman), who becomes entangled in a dangerous world of money laundering and drug cartels. When a scheme goes awry, he’s forced to relocate his family from Chicago to the remote Ozarks in Missouri to launder money for a cartel, working to outmaneuver local criminals, corrupt officials, and his own fractured family dynamics.
Tahan’s character is Wyatt Langmore — cousin of Julia Garner’s Ruth — a member of a local crime family who proves an intelligent and introspective fan favorite, in spite of his troubled upbringing. His work as part of the ensemble earned him three SAG Award nominations between 2019 and 2023.

The story behind the novel is almost as famous as the novel itself: in the summer of 1816, Mary Shelley and her husband Percy Shelley traveled to Lake Geneva on a trip with her stepsister Claire Claremont and Claire’s lover, poet Lord Byron. Because of the abnormally cold weather, the foursome were forced to stay indoors for nearly the entire trip, and to pass the time, Byron proposed a challenge to see who could write the scariest ghost story. Mary, a woman with a taste for the macabre, was inspired by a discussion of galvanism, a scientific theory that electricity could stimulate or create life, to write what she first thought would be a short story: the tale of a young, ambitious student playing God and creating an abomination in the process.
From that idea came quite possibly the most influential and iconic horror novel in history. Published two years later in 1818, “Frankenstein; or,...

Canadian actress Catherin O'Hara was bumping up against "Saturday Night Live" for years before she landed a job on the show. Early in her career, O'Hara performed with the Toronto branch of the famed comedy troupe The Second City, serving as an understudy for comedienne Gilda Radner. O'Hara stepped into Rander's shoes when the latter left to get a job on "Saturday Night Live." The remaining Toronotoites stayed back and founded their own sketch comedy series, "Sctv," which debuted in 1976. "Sctv" proved to be fertile ground for upcoming comedy superstars. In addition to O'Hara, John Candy, Eugene Levy, Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas, Andrea Martin, Martin Short, Joe Flaherty, and Harold Ramis all broke through. "Sctv" was huge in Canada, but remained secondary to "Saturday Night Live" down in the United States.
"Sctv" lasted for six seasons and ran 135 episodes, while "Saturday Night Live" (beyond all expectations) persists to this day.

The oldest post I could find for "Beetlejuice 2" in the /Film archives is from 2011, but director Tim Burton and Warner Bros. have been wanting to make a follow-up to the 1988 original for literal decades. As early as 1990, Burton was developing "Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian," which would have seen the Deetz family moving to the island state and Michael Keaton's Beetlejuice eventually winning a surfing contest. That version obviously never happened, but ideas for a sequel have been bouncing around Hollywood ever since, and the project has gone through tons of stops and starts and false positives on its way to finally receiving a confirmed theatrical release date of September 6, 2024.
A rocky development alone is not enough of a reason to doubt this movie's quality; plenty of films have been delayed for years and ended up being masterpieces. (Just look at "Mad Max: Fury Road.") But there are a couple...

In a Halloween world where every person is a monster, a vampire, a skeleton, a werewolf, a demon, or a creature that hides under the stairs, who could possibly be a villain? In Henry Selick's 1993 stop-motion animated fantasy "The Nightmare Before Christmas," Jack Skellington is the community's most famous local hero, but he is not a killer. Indeed, Jack seems to be good-hearted (if he had a heart) and secretly longs for romance. The local mad scientist Dr. Finkelstein (William Hickey) can resurrect dead skeletons, but he doesn't want to take lives. Even the two-faced Mayor (Glenn Shadix) is more ineffectual than evil.
The only monster in Halloween Town that truly longs for violence and aches to kill people with his own hands is Oogie Boogie, a.k.a. the Boogeyman (Ken Page). As imagined by the film's designer, Tim Burton, Oogie Boogie is a large, empty-eyed burlap sack full of bugs and snakes.

When Henry Selick's animated fantasy "The Nightmare Before Christmas" was first released in October of 1993, it wasn't an overwhelming hit. Made for a budget of $20 million, the film only opened to about $191,000 in its first weekend. It would eventually crawl its way to a respectable but not mind-blowing $50 million overall. Disney, the film's distributor, clearly had little faith in the project and released it under its Touchstone label, feeling it was too weird for little kids. Only a small segment of passionate teenage Tim Burton fans latched onto it (Burton designed the film and wrote the poem on which the script is based), and it was the weirdos and Goths who bought it on VHS and committed the film to memory. For a few brief, sweet years, "Nightmare" was little more than a legitimate cult phenomenon.

Tim Burton didn't enjoy seeing Nicolas Cage as Superman in 'The Flash'.The iconic filmmaker was just weeks away from working on 'Superman Lives' in 1998 when the plug got pulled after two years of pre-production work, while the actor did play the role - albeit with a lot of CGI - in a multiverse sequence in the 2023 movie, which also saw Michael Keaton reprise his role as Batman.Asked if he has regrets over missing out on the 'Superman' movie, he told the British Film Institute: "No, I don’t have regrets."I will say this: when you work that long on a project and it doesn’t happen, it affects you for the rest of your life."Because you get passionate about things, and each thing is an unknown journey, and it wasn’t there yet."But it’s one of those experiences that never leaves you,...

Andy Muschietti's recent superhero flick "The Flash" hoped to lure in audiences with a sprawling story that spans several parallel universes. It was the same approach taken by John Watts in "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and Sam Raimi in "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," in that all three films assembled multiple versions of certain superhero characters culled from various extant movie franchises. "The Flash" contains the Ben Affleck version of Batman as he appeared in Zack Snyder's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," as well as the Michael Keaton version of Batman as he appeared in Tim Burton's 1989 film called merely "Batman." The Flash, he finds, can run so fast that he can travel into alternate timelines.

In his 35-year career, Tim Burton has carved out a niche for himself making quirky, eccentric films that are often box office bonanzas. Let’s take a look back at all 19 of his films, ranked from worst to best, in our photo gallery.
Burton began his career as an animator for Walt Disney Studios before making the short films “Vincent” (1982) and “Frankenweenie” (1984). He directed his first feature when he was just 26 years old: “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” (1985). Burton followed that success with the macabre comedy “Beetlejuice” (1988) before entering the world of blockbusters with the dark, ominous superhero adventure “Batman” (1989).
From the beginning, Burton displayed a talent for crafting visually stunning worlds unlike any seen before. Four of his films, in fact — “Batman,” “Sleepy Hollow,” “Sweeney Todd,” and “Alice in Wonderland” — have won Oscars for their art direction.

Tim Burton will never forget Paul Reubens. Burton has shared a tribute to Reubens, who starred in and co-wrote Burton’s feature directorial debut Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, following Reuben’s death Sunday following a years-long battle with cancer at age 70.
“Shocked and saddened,” Burton wrote in a post on Instagram alongside a photo of the two on the set of Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. “I’ll never forget how Paul helped me at the beginning of my career. It would not have happened without his support. He was a great artist. I’ll miss him.”
Pee-wee’s Big Adventure‘s Pee-wee Herman character became known following the 1981 The Pee-wee Herman Show comedy special on HBO. The film character was a quirky man who dressed in his trademark gray suit, red bow tie and white loafers, and in the film went on an adventure as he hunted down his stolen bike.

The character of Pee-wee Herman — a chuckling, hilarious man-child invented by comedian Paul Reubens — made his debut in 1977 in the film "Cheech and Chong's Next Movie," and cemented his legacy in 1981's "Nice Dreams." In the latter film, clearly strung out on something, the Pee-wee-like character asked if Cheech was the "guy from the hamburger train."
The same year, still playing the Pee-wee shtick, Reubens debuted "The Pee-wee Herman Show" at the Groundlings Theater in Los Angeles, cementing the character in the local pop consciousness. The stage shows were quite expressly adult, even if Pee-wee himself was quirky and childish. Characters that debuted on stage would eventually appear on the popular TV show "Pee-wee's Playhouse" in 1986, including Jambi the Genie, Miss Yvonne, and Cowboy Curtis.

“I particularly love Wednesday because she shares my worldview on things. And that was fun to explore,” shared Tim Burton in a behind-the-scenes featurette about making the Netflix series. It marks the director’s first foray into TV after a film career that spawned classics like “Beetlejuice,” “Batman,” “Edward Scissorhands” and “Ed Wood.” His animator’s apprenticeship with Walt Disney Studios in the early 1980s laid the foundation for Burton’s two Oscar nominated films, “Corpse Bride” and “Frankenweenie.” Forty years into his storied career, the multi-talented writer, producer, animator and director stepped behind the camera for his first television series.

Director Tim Burton has tapped into the feelings of teen angst and estrangement in his classic romantic fantasy "Edward Scissorhands" and with his animation work in "Frankenweenie" about a weird boy and his dog. Burton explores that territory once again with "Wednesday" starring Jenna Ortega, as the precocious, whip-smart Addams daughter who's sent off to Nevermore Academy, a school tailor-made for outcasts.
Burton has almost become the goth version of John Hughes, and his macabre sensibility and grotesque aesthetic have become immediately recognizable trademarks. His taste for darker imagery and his attention to detail made his work a standout at CalArts when he was a student, and made him somewhat of an outlier at Disney when he first started at the company. Burton may be done working with the House of Mouse for now, but his involvement with "Wednesday" and Netflix looks to be continuing with season 2 hopefully coming soon.

Fans of Joe Dante's 1984 Christmas horror comedy film "Gremlins" may know that screenwriter Chris Columbus initially wrote the script as a mere writing sample. The script was so elaborate — and so horrifying — that it wasn't meant to be even possible. The website CutPrintFilm published an oral history of "Gremlins" in 2016, and a lot of the film's behind-the-scenes details were revisited. The story goes that Columbus wrote a straight-up horror movie that had a lot more violence and had Gizmo — the adorable central mogwai — transformed into the murderous gremlin, Stripe.
A behind-the-scenes feature on the 2002 DVD special edition of "Gremlins" revealed that Steven Spielberg had somehow got his hands on the script, and had expressed interest in actually making it. Spielberg changed a few things about it, however, to make it less horror-forward. Notably, Gizmo was to stay cuddly and marketable throughout, and the character of Lynn Peltzer (Frances Lee McCain...

Oscars: ‘Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio’ could lead stop-motion renaissance in Best Animated Feature
From prestige critical darlings like “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” to gonzo arthouse fare like Phil Tippett’s “Mad God,” stop-motion filmmaking is in the midst of a renaissance. As opposed to traditional and computer-generated animation, stop motion is achieved by physically manipulating puppets, clay models, and other tangible materials between frames. While some level of CGI is necessary to simulate, for example, a natural disaster, the bulk of what audiences see on screen is designed by hand.
Gold Derby’s projected Best Animated Feature lineup poses an exciting possibility: With “Gdt’s Pinocchio” out front, “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On” in third, and “Wendell and Wild” on the verge of breaking into the top five, stop-motion projects could outnumber computer-animated features for the third time since the category’s 2002 induction. It will be just the second time, however, that this has happened in a lineup of five.

Tim Burton is one of the greatest directors of our era. A former animator for Disney, his early shorts, Vincent and Frankenweenie, marked him as one of the most promising up-and-comers in the business. His first film, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, helped turn Paul Reubens’ Pee-Wee Herman into a household name. It would mark his first collaboration with composer Danny Elfman, who would remain one of his most frequent collaborators. His next film, Beetlejuice, was an even bigger hit, but when Burton was chosen to direct Batman and picked the star of Beetlejuice, Michael Keaton, to be his Caped Crusader, people were wary. However, the resulting film became one of the biggest hits of the eighties and changed the superhero film forever, with many still counting Keaton as the definitive Batman.

By qualifying for Best Animated Feature, A24’s “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” became the first stop-motion/live-action hybrid to enter the Oscar race. Now it could make history as the first hybrid nominee. If nominated along with “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” — the favorite in the category — and Henry Selick’s “Wendell & Wild,” this would be another milestone for the technique, tying the record for most stop-motion Best Animated Feature nominees set in 2013, when “Frankenweenie,” “ParaNorman,” and “The Pirates! Band of Misfits” all vied for the award.
“What constitutes animation as it relates to the Oscar qualification is an important discussion,” director Dean Fleischer Camp told IndieWire. “We got to show the process. What some people don’t understand is how animated it is. They think it’s a stop-motion character and some objects composited into a live-action world. Writing and directing a short is a potential passageway to creating a full-length feature film.
Aspiring directors use this medium to create a proof of concept on a small budget that can go on to win on the short film festival circuit and be picked up by investors, leading to larger projects and paving the way to a career in Hollywood.
Shorts are not uncommon to be made as proof of concept for a feature film, especially by first-time directors. Multiple Oscar-nominated actor Bradley Cooper, for example, had to prove to the studio heads that he was capable of directing A Star Is Born, also starring Lady Gaga, in 2019 by creating a short.

"Ozark" is one of the best drama shows in recent memory. Although "Ozark" tested viewers' willingness to sit through disturbing content, it surprisingly took its familial storylines seriously. The combination of interpersonal family drama and complex criminal conspiracies made it one of Netflix's most unique shows.
"Ozark" follows the story of Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman), a selfish financial advisor who gets in over his head because of his involvement with a Mexican drug cartel. To pay back the cartel's lieutenant, Camino Del Rio (Esai Morales), Marty decides to move his family to the Ozarks and start a money laundering scheme. His wife, Wendy (Laura Linney), and children Charlotte (Sofia Hublitz) and Jonah (Skylar Gaertner) initially have no idea about his secret connections.
"Ozark" concluded earlier this year with its divisive series finale. One of the things that distinguished "Ozark" from its inception was the incredible cast. Here are some...

In March of 2010, Deadline announced that Tim Burton was officially in production on a stop-motion animated version of "The Addams Family," based on the famously macabre Chas Addams comic strips that ran in the New Yorker. The ghoulish characters were to be designed to look like their original drawings, and it was to be released in black and white. The project was canceled, rumor has it, when Universal lost the film rights to the property. Burton did not make "The Addams Family," but he did end up leaning into a black and white, stop-motion animated film in 2013 with "Frankenweenie," a remake of his 1984 live-action short film. MGM eventually took the reins on the "Family," and released a CGI animated film in 2019. MGM's film, which starred Charlize Theron and Oscar Isaac, was popular enough to warrant a sequel in 2021.

We recently told you about director Scott Goldberg‘s upcoming werewolf movie The Forest Hills, set to star Edward Furlong (Terminator 2) and Dee Wallace (The Howling). Deadline brings us a surprising update this afternoon, reporting that Shelley Duvall (The Shining) will also be appearing in The Forest Hills – Duvall’s first movie appearance in two decades.
The Forest Hills follows Rico (Chiko Mendez), a man who is tormented by nightmarish visions after enduring head trauma while hiking in the Catskills.
Deadline notes, “Duvall will play the mother of the mentally and emotionally disturbed Rico, who serves as his inner voice.”
Shelley Duvall retired from acting in the wake of Manna from Heaven back in 2002, the actress of course also known for Popeye, Time Bandits, and Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie.

It sounds like Tim Burton won't be making more Disney movies anytime soon. Per IndieWire, the filmmaker spoke about his relationship with the massive corporation at the Lumière Festival this week after winning the festival's Prix Lumière. There, the director explained that "Dumbo" was what sounds like the last straw in his working partnership with the major studio.
"My history is that I started out there," Burton said, in reference to his early days spent storyboarding and animating for Disney. One of his short films, the live-action 1984 "Frankenweenie," was produced by Disney, but he was let go from the company right after, for wasting money on a movie that was too scary, according to Yahoo News. He soon went on to make his first feature for Warner Bros., "Pee-wee's Big Adventure," and has since directed many more films, many of which have dark themes yet are perfectly kid-friendly.

Anyone hoping for a sequel to Tim Burton’s “Dumbo” shouldn’t hold their breath.
Speaking at the Lumière Festival in Lyon after receiving the Prix Lumière, Burton revealed that the 2019 film likely marked the end of his long-running creative relationship with Disney (via Deadline). He began his film career as an animator at Disney before Warner Bros. hired him to make his live-action directorial debut on “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure.” He returned to work with Disney on films like “Ed Wood,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Frankenweenie,” and most recently, “Dumbo.”
Burton believes that the entertainment landscape has shifted to the point where it no longer makes sense for him to collaborate with the entertainment giant. He explained that his experience working on “Dumbo” made him realize that Disney had gotten too big for him.

Tim Burton has a reputation for being a rather eccentric individual, so even he will admit that it’s a “strange phenomenon” that he has had so much success working within the Hollywood studio system. But while he has had some great successes, he has also had – like any filmmaker – projects that he just couldn’t get into production. One of the most famous of those lost projects is Superman Lives, which is covered in the video embedded above. A movie Burton was going to direct with Nicolas Cage as Superman. Speaking in a masterclass at the Lumière Festival, Burton revealed (as reported by Deadline) there’s another entry on his list of lost projects that sounds quite interesting: a musical remake of House of Wax that would have starred Michael Jackson!
Here’s the passage that discusses the lost House of Wax remake:
“I have worked for several months on things that got rejected,...

Being a Henry Selick fan from the time I was in second grade (and I have my battered copy of the official "The Nightmare Before Christmas" novelization to prove it), you can imagine how frustrating it was for me to watch his career go in circles for much of the past decade. No doubt, it was doubly hard for the filmmaker, who would end up having to wait 13 years to release a follow-up project to his splendid 2009 stop-motion animated movie "Coraline."
At first, the critical and financial success of his wondrous Neil Gaiman adaptation boded well for Selick. Within a year of its release, he had signed a shiny new deal to make a stop-motion film for Pixar and Disney (the studio he had worked with on "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and "James and the Giant Peach"). He would go on to pitch his idea for "ShadeMaker," a dark fantasy...

Henry Slick is back with a new, original animated feature called “Wendell & Wild.” Incredibly, this film (out October 28 on Netflix) is his first since “Coraline” back in 2009. For a while it seemed like Selick, whose singular genius was responsible for “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and the animated intrudes in Wes Anderson’s “The Life Aquatic” (among other things), would never make another movie. Thankfully that isn’t the case.
“Wendell & Wild,” based on an original idea of Selick’s, concerns two demons (voiced by Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key) who work in a hellish theme park amongst the “souls of the danged” (according to Selick they aren’t quite as bad as the souls of the damned). Together, the demons attempt to utilize a human child named Kat (voiced by Lyric Ross) as their ticket to the land of the living. Imagine “Beetlejuice” but with a wider variety of influences and,...

It’s no surprise that the film dominated the box office during its time. The film was directed by legendary filmmaker Tim Burton, who had worked on movies like Frankenweenie and Pee-wee’s Big Adventure and would eventually create masterpieces such as Sleepy Hollow and Big Fish. A24’s acclaimed stop-motion/live-action hybrid “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” could be the wild card in the animated feature Oscar race — going up against such early favorites as Pixar’s “Turning Red,” Disney’s “Strange World,” and Netflix’s two stop-motion behemoths: “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” and Henry Selick’s “Wendell & Wild” (the latter being the lone animated feature premiering at TIFF).
And why not? The feature debut from director Dean Fleischer Camp (adapting a series of shorts he created with “Marcel” star Jenny Slate), has been embraced by critics for its charm, wit, inventive stop-motion, and its adorable breakout star. The one-inch anthropomorphic shell (voiced by Slate) lives with his grandmother Connie (Isabella Rossellini) and develops a friendship with doc filmmaker Dean (Fleischer Camp), who moves in and films Marcel’s daily activities, which go viral. Marcel, who’s in search of his lost family,...

Morbidly peculiar things happen in the small U.S. towns and suburbs of director Tim Burton's films. A young boy resurrects his beloved deceased pup using the power of electricity in "Frankenweenie." A cosmetics saleswoman brings home a young man with giant scissors for hands to stay with her family in "Edward Scissorhands." Two good-natured ghosts invite a miscreant poltergeist to try to scare off their home's eccentric new owners in "Beetlejuice." But why is Burton so interested in exploring the weirdness lurking beneath the cheery facade of American society?
