The Curse of the Aesthetic
Prismark1022 February 2020
Art and ghostly goings on are the order of the day for Father Brown.

Benjamin Milton is a tortured artist. He has lost his muse Isabella but he sees her spirit wandering around the mansion.

When he unveils a bust of Isabella to the public, it has been damaged. Later art collector Conrad French who is interested in buying up anything related to Isabella is found electrocuted in Milton's studio.

Father Brown was at the public unveiling and knows that Milton is in a bad place especially over the loss of Isabella.

When Milton's former nanny turned housekeeper is found dead, it turns into a murder enquiry.

Suspects range from Milton's sister who is disputing his inheritance to a former model who also posed for Milton and was then discarded by him.

There are several obvious suspects, some good comedy from Inspector Mallory. Yet there is a dark underlying story of abuse, obsession and control. I did like the little twist regarding Isabella.

I loved it.

A tortured Artist is haunted by visions of his dead Model.

An absolutely brilliant episode, I loved it, after a jaw dropping start, we are treated to a ghostly story, a very well rounded characters, and a dramatic ending with a twist.

It's a very well written mystery, it's wonderfully clever, with a convincing plot, and a believable resolution.

As for visuals, this is the best looking episode of Father Brown I've seen, and of course the acting was first rate, Mrs McCarthy of course adding some fun, we see her without a hat for once.

Terrific, 9/10.

Grainne O'Mahony guest stars

Warning: Spoilers
Grainne O'Mahony guest stars as the ethereal Isabella Peroux in an episode that was broadcast just as the pandemic shut down much of the world. Anyway, there is an interesting Irish-centric theme in this, as Father Brown unmasks the Irish ethnic connection due to pronunciations that exposed the Irish ethnic connection.

I like Father Brown, and I've been catching up on the later seasons for daytime viewing. I'd love to see some major guest casting such as Danny Dyer or one of the Spice Girls appearing. Maybe in season 11 we'll get that, now that Danny Dyer is no longer in Eastenders.

The Curse of the Aesthetic is worth watching.
