Even after decades of masked killers armed with increasingly ludicrous weapons, cinemagoers still flock to theaters to experience the raw thrills of watching homicidal maniacs hunt the most dangerous game. And while there’s nothing wrong with filmmakers choosing to rely on tried-and-true formulas when depicting classic cat-and-mouse conflicts, the sheer amount of these movies means that horror fans often find themselves wishing for riskier takes on these familiar ideas.
Thankfully, there are some brave filmmakers out there that use of the basic premise of a slasher as a jumping off point to tell more creative stories. A recent example of this is Chris Nash’s highly ambitious In a Violent Nature, a Friday-the-13th-inspired horror film told from the melancholy perspective of the undead killer himself. And with the film impressing genre fans with its artsy reinvention of common clichés, we’ve decided to come up with a...

Director Erik Bloomquist’s horror film She Came from the Woods is set to reach theatres on February 10th – tickets are already available for purchase at Regal, AMC, and Harkins – and to help you decide whether or not this is a movie you’d like to check out on the big screen, we have the trailer embedded above. The film stars Cara Buono of Stranger Things – and just like Stranger Things, She Came from the Woods is set in the 1980s. Buono also had a role in the Let the Right One In remake Let Me In, which was set in the ’80s as well. Genre projects keep taking her back to that decade.
Written by Erik Bloomquist and Carson Bloomquist, She Came from the Woods follows the staff of an overnight camp as they conjure an old legend on the last day of the summer of 1987.

Stevan Mena's Malevolence trilogy will close out with Killer aka Malevolence 3: Killer. This third film follows Malevolence (2003) and Bereavement (2010); Bereavement was a prequel to Malevolence. Production on this third film was held up, due to the tragic death of actor Scott Decker. However, Killer is expected to release this October, on home entertainment platforms. The film's poster artwork and release trailer are hosted here. This indie film fan remembers hearing of some of the difficulties behind this third production. Director Mena has stated earlier about this title and the challenges of its completion: "it was difficult to continue after Scott’s tragic death." Though, the show must go on as they say. Mena finished with: "but so many good people worked very hard on this film...through some creative rewrites, additional casting, and the crew agreeing to take a deferred salary, we were able to not only complete...

Welcome to another horror round-up! In this edition, we take a look at new posters for a pair of movies making their premieres in the Midnighters section at the SXSW Film Festival later this month: The Boy (which sounds a little like Stevan Mena's Bereavement) and The Invitation (the new film from Jennifer's Body director Karyn Kusama). We also have details on Descendant, a new spec script from the writer who penned the screenplay adaptation of Clive Barker's The Midnight Meat Train.
The Boy: "It’s the summer of 1989. 9-year-old Ted Henley (Jared Breeze) and his father John (David Morse) are the proprietors of The Mt. Vista Motel, a crumbling resort buried in the mountains of the American West. Since Ted's mother left, John has drifted into despondency—leaving Ted to fend for himself. In this isolation, unchecked by the bounds of parenting, Ted’s darker impulses begin to manifest.

Director Jackie Kong, whose low-budget horror flicks Blood Diner and The Being have become cult favorites among fans of '80s horror, has stepped behind the camera once again for the romantic horror feature CoExistence – which also marks the screen reunion of Blade Runner stars Rutger Hauer and Daryl Hannah. Kong dropped off the horror map for many years to work as an activist for the non-profit group Asian-American Media Development (Aamd), but has finally returned to filmmaking with this vampiric twist on Romeo & Juliet set in California's Sonoma wine country. The modern-day retelling involves a bitter rivalry between two wine-making clans intensified by a forbidden love affair between teens from both families (played by Nick Krause & Bella Thorne), which also threatens to expose a shocking family secret. Despite the teen/vampire romance element, Kong is quick to downplay comparisons to the Twilight franchise. “I’m not just catering to teenagers,...

For myself personally, I've been a huge fan of filmmaker Stevan Mena ever since I first caught a theatrical showing of his debut feature 'Malevolence' back in 2004. You have to keep in mind what was going on in horror at the time. The two ficks I'd seen prior to 'Malevolence' were 'Aliens Vs Predator' and 'The Exorcist: The Beginning,' so I had pretty much given up on the genre at that point. But thankfully, Mena's brutal and relentless "slasher" perfectly captured the essence of the movies I grew up loving; so much so that I later had to reconfirm it was a new movie and not something from the 80's only at that time finally getting a release. But 'Malevolence' was always intended to be the middle part of a more epic trilogy. 'Bereavement' came out in 2010 and told the prequel story of how Martin Bristol became the killer we see in 'Malevolence.

Martin Bristol is back! Well, he could be back – with your support. Writer-director Stevan Mena is looking to complete his particularly violent three-film “Malevolence”/”Bereavement” series, but, in an effort to steer clear of folks who might insist he tone down the brutality, Mena is making this one totally independently. Taking a cue from the recent surge of films successfully funded via Kickstarter, Mena launched his own campaign for “Malevolence 3.” The films come from a book Mena divided into three stories. The first, the basis for the 2004 release, “Malevolence,” focuses on a group of bank robbers who hide out in an abandoned farmhouse after a heist. Little do [ Read More ]

Here at Dread Central we're inundated with e-mails every day pertaining to filmmakers who want us to cover their Kickstarter projects. Nine times out of ten we pass because if we didn't we'd be writing all day and who knows if said projects will ever even get made (that is if you're not Veronica Mars).

Alexandra Daddario certainly made for a kick-ass heroine battling Graham Sutter in Bereavement, but can she take on Leatherface? Watching a slasher run around, chopping up helpless victims is almost always a good time, but the experience necessitates a strong leading lady. With a market currently oversaturated with sequels, prequels, reboots and just a few original ideas, we’re left with a wide range of heroines -- the good old charming fighters, the ones that are there to give the killer something pretty to chase and nothing more, and then there are those that land somewhere in the middle courtesy of an outlandish twist or wacky behavior. Where will Daddario fall on the spectrum? We’ll have to wait until Texas Chainsaw 3D hits on January 4 to see, but in the meantime...

Hollywood kicks off the new year in movies this Friday with the release of Texas Chainsaw 3D. The horror sequel stars 26-year-old actress Alexandra Daddario in her first major studio lead role, a gig that came a decade into a career that began with a regular stint on the soap opera All My Children. Since then she played many supporting parts on the big and small screen (as well as on the web) before landing the job playing Annabeth Chase, one of the main demigod characters of the Percy Jackson movies (the second of which opens in August). However, Texas Chainsaw 3D actually marks her second time playing the lead in a slasher film, the first being in the indie flick Bereavement, shot in 2007 but not released in theaters until last year. Even before that, Daddario appeared in a short film, as many young actors now do when starting out. And...

Genre fans may recall first seeing actress Alexandra Daddario in Stevan Mena's 'Bereavement', a prequel to his film 'Malevolence', so considering the adversary she had to face off in that film, it seemed to be the perfect training ground for when she'd inevitably go head to head with one of the horror's biggest heavyweights. And there's no bigger one (literally and figuratively) than Leatherface! With 'Texas Chainsaw 3D' arriving in theaters on January 4th, we thought this would be the ideal time to get Alexandra in the hot seat to talk all things Chainsaw Massacre!
First off, just wanted to tell you how much I love your performance in Bereavement. I remember coming to set and (director) Stevan Mena had nothing but nice things to say about you.

Even though we missed her during our set visit for Texas Chainsaw 3D in Shreveport, Dread Central did recently have the opportunity to speak with the newest heroine of the Chainsaw franchise- Alexandra Daddario.
In Texas Chainsaw 3D, we follow Daddario's character, Heather, who has the misfortune of collecting on an inheritance from a mysterious unknown relative, only to find out she has ties to the cannibalistic Sawyer clan, including a certain chainsaw-wielding maniac with a penchant for wearing masks that he crafts out of human flesh.
Facing off against the one and only Leatherface is a daunting task for anyone so during our recent interview with Daddario we spoke to the actress about how she prepared for the role, what she enjoys about working in the horror genre and more.
Check out the highlights of our exclusive chat with Daddario below, and look for our interview with Texas Chainsaw 3D director John Luessenhop soon!

Pictured below is heroine Heather Miller (Bereavement’s Alexandra Daddario) on the run from the latest Leatherface (Dan Yeager) in Texas Chainsaw 3D, which arrives January 4 from Lionsgate and also stars Lost’s Tania Raymonde, Scott Eastwood, Hatchet’s Richard Riehle and Bill Moseley, Chainsaw 2’s Chop-Top now stepping into Jim Siedow’s shoes as Drayton Sawyer. With throngs of voracious fans quick to dismiss certain sequels and remakes in this franchise, it becomes apparent that Luessenhop knows and respects that he is treading on (un)holy ground. “I’m a huge fan of what [Hooper] did, particularly with the original,” Luessenhop tells Fango, “and it’s a bit daunting to step into their footsteps. The last thing I wanted was a 1990s horror movie. What I’ve tried to do is make a traditional horror film for the first 60 minutes, which is what I think will keep you engaged. I...

Actress Alexandra Daddario takes on one of horror's biggest bad-asses, Leatherface, in Texas Chainsaw 3D, opening in theaters January 4, 2013, and spoke with the star who has previously appeared in the horror film Bereavement and shows such as White Collar and Parenthood. While we didn't connect with Daddario while on the set of the new Chainsaw, we did, however, speak to her via phone about her character.
Daddario plays young woman named Heather who learns that she has inherited a Texas estate from a grandmother she never knew she had. After embarking on a road trip with friends to uncover her roots, she finds she is the sole owner of a lavish, isolated Victorian mansion. But her newfound wealth comes at a price as she stumbles upon a horror that awaits her in the mansion’s dank cellars. Head inside for more!

Bereavement
Stars: Alexandra Daddario, Spencer List, Brett Rickaby, Michael Biehn, Kathryn Meisle, John Savage, Chase Pechacek | Written and Directed by Stevan Mena
What makes somebody evil? Is it just in their nature to be that person, to have the ability to harm others without remorse or is it their environment that builds the monster inside. This is the well-known argument of nature vs. nurture and Bereavement is a film that pushes for the belief that its nurture that creates the monster, that the parent is to blame.
Bereavement is actually the prequel to a movie called Malevolence, looking at the tale of Martin Bristol. In Bereavement we see him as a six year old boy with a rare disease; he lacks the ability to feel pain. When he is kidnapped by a serial killer he is taught that torturing and killing is ok because pain is not felt, which of course he understands.

f you can’t get enough genre staples crammed into a single film, I don’t blame you. The more the merrier (one of the reasons I can get into most of Rob Zombie’s work). Anchor Bay is about to treat those dedicated to the macabre to a wildly promising grindhouse flick written, directed and starring none other than super bad ass, Michael Biehn (you know, the dude who tears shit up in Terminator, Aliens, Planet Terror, Bereavement, The Abyss, The Seventh Sign… well, you get my drift), and believe me when I tell you, there are quite a few familiar faces to gaze upon in this little shocker!

It's been a little while since we've heard from our friends over at the CarnieVille camp. But earlier this week they treated us with a brand new poster for the film and two new stills. Check 'em out!
CarnieVille was written/directed/produced by Victor Mathieu and stars Brett Rickaby (The Crazies, Bereavement), Victor Miller (Friday the 13th) and Jeremy Jackson ("Baywatch"). Check out Bonzo the Clown in the teaser below.
Synopsis
After having witnessed her neighbor murder his own wife in his clown outfit, Corey has been dealing with coulrophobia (fear of clowns) ever since she was a child. On Halloween night her boyfriend and his friends decide to help her overcome her phobia of clowns by taking her to a nearby carnival. However, they soon discover that the price of admission is their lives.

Who’s ready for more nightmares courtesy of Brett Rickaby? The actor’s responsible for a number of particularly chilling characters including The Crazies‘ Bill Farnum and Bereavement‘s Graham Sutter, but based on the new teaser for CarnieVille, Bonzo might give both a run for their money. When a neighbor murders his wife dressed as a clown and a young Corey catches it all, she’s left with an intense case of coulrophobia (fear of clowns). Years later, Corey’s boyfriend and his friends decide it’s time for her to overcome the fear and take her to a local carnival. Well, if the gang runs into Rickaby’s Bonzo at this carnival, I’d like to...

2011 was somewhat of a quiet year for the horror genre and me and I still haven’t seen everything I would’ve liked to – but so far, here’s the top 5 horror films of 2011 that made quite an impression on me.
5. Final Destination 5
Let’s face it, they never meant The Final Destination to be the last one.
After all, you really can’t stop death, can you? – Haven’t these film makers learnt anything from their characters?
But seriously, Final Destination 5 was a return to form for the series, after the drab and dreary last two installments. Tony Todd’s return was a welcomed one and the writers threw in this interesting little twist to shake up the familiar formula.
Not all of it worked but damn if it wasn’t tense as all hell – and with one of the year’s best horror soundtracks,...

For almost 30 years now actor Michael Biehn has been a beloved fixture within the world of genre films (and outside as well), and his performances in movies like The Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, The Seventh Sign, Tombstone, Jade, The Rock, Clockstoppers, Planet Terror and even last year's thriller Bereavement have only further cemented his status as an icon of modern cinema.
Biehn's latest work in Xavier Gens' explosive apocalyptic flick The Divide is another example of just how truly badass the actor is. He portrays Mickey, a grizzly-natured landlord who ends up playing reluctant host to several tenants in his building's basement after a nuclear bomb is released in New York City.
Dread Central recently had the opportunity to sit down and talk with Biehn about his performance as Mickey in The Divide wherein the actor discussed how the original character from the script was tossed out and he...

I’ve started and stopped, deleted, began from scratch, it must be a year end list. I let these things stress me out far more than I should. I have a real problem with ranking films. I feel as, every film I watch, even some bad ones, are enjoyed at different levels, for different reasons. It seems wrong to me to slap an arbitrary number next to it. How do I rank my enjoyment? Especially if it’s due to different factors? Well, the answer is, I don’t. I’m going to list for you, 10 films of 2011 that I feel should be seen. Please don’t take it as an extensive list, as there are still Far too many flicks that were released at some capacity during the year that I gotten around to yet. Keep in mind that that there is no ranking involved. Movies are listed as they come to me,...

Well, folks, 2011 is officially in the can, and surprisingly it wasn't such a horrendous year. It was definitely better than 2010, which was a huge step up from the putrid 2009. We laughed, we applauded, we were left dumbstruck, and of course we were infuriated. Read on for our cheers and jeers!
Now, with a fresh movie-watching start before us, we're taking our usual yearly look back at the good, the bad, the Wtf, and everything in between.
And don't be lazy by just reading along! Get off of your asses and give us your lists in the comments section below. We wanna hear from you if only to compare notes. Lots and lots of notes.

Year: 2010Director: Stevan MenaCast: Michael Beihn, Alexandra Daddario, Brett Rickaby, Spencer List, John Savage
Six year old Martin Bristol is abducted from his yard by psychopath Graham Sutter, who has a penchant for hanging women in his basement and brutally butchering them. He keeps Martin as a protege of sorts, exposing him to the slaughters and eventually teaching him what it takes to murder. When Allison moves in with her uncle who happens to reside next door to Sutter's slaughterhouse, her curiosity about the creepy neighboring property gets the best of her, resulting in a blood soaked climax.
The long-awaited prequel to 2004's Malevolence, a fabulous homage to Halloween and Friday the 13th and easily one of the best slasher films of the last decade, extremely high expectations were had going into Bereavement. Director Mena proved to have a real talent for creating Carpenter-like tension and suspense with Malevolence, but...

Director: Christopher Leitch.
Writers: William Penick and Chris Sey.
Secrets in the Walls is a film starring Jeri Ryan (Dead Lines), Kay Panabaker (Fame), and Peyton List (Bereavement). This is director Christopher Leitch's umpteenth television film and Secrets in the Walls was developed as a television film for the Lifetime Movie Network. If you are unaware, the Lifetime Movie Network and channel produce and distribute entertainment specifically for women and their families. Therefore, male characters are on the periphery and the messages involve issues of gender e.g. single mothers, coping with stress. This leads the film into, understandably, PG-13 territory, with Secrets in the Walls losing some of its edge in favour of a predictable plotline. However, let us put a spin on this review by looking at this myth of improper burial leading to hauntings and cleansing rituals, which are issues raised in this somewhat slowly paced thriller.

The slasher genre of horror deserves its due respect for lasting so long as a staple of film and giving us some truly iconic characters like Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger, but those villains are ultimately two-dimensional. You can flesh out their back stories as much as you’d like, but once they pop up onscreen they’re little more than menaces lurking in the dark to slay sexually awakened teenagers. So while their visages may be the most recognizable faces of horror, they’re far from the most terrifying. That distinction belongs to the killers who seem very real, the ones that can more easily be explained by a stunted or very twisted intellect and whose treachery isn’t fully known until the victims are too close to run. Though the killer of Bereavement doesn’t have the complexity or depth of Hannibal Lecter and the film is a bit lacking in great performances,...

Bereavement is the prequel to Stevan Mena's 2004 feature debut Malevolence. In Bereavement, we see how Martin became the brutal psychopath he was in Malevolence. We spoke exclusively to Mena about working on a shoestring budget, directing kids with such intense subject matter, and what we have to look forward to in Malevolence 3. You wrote, produced, directed, edited, scored this movie... Did anyone else work on this film or was it all you? I could have sworn there were some other people lurking around on set [laughs]. No, there were a lot of people. I just get to do the fun stuff. What was it that made you want to take on all these different roles? Basically, a lack of money. Unfortunately...

It’s the second part of our interview with Michael Biehn, in which he talks about his acting in The Abyss and Tombstone, and his first feature as director, The Victim…
As the first part of our interview demonstrated, the great, under-appreciated actor Michael Biehn has enjoyed a lengthy and varied acting career. His fruitful partnership with James Cameron continued after the success of The Terminator and Aliens, with the pair teaming up again for The Abyss.
Here, we talk to Biehn about the making of that 1989 epic of sci-fi, working with James Cameron, passing on Point Break, and defending strippers in his directorial debut, The Victim…
I’ve always admired your loyalty to James Cameron. And then you went on to work with him on The Abyss (1989), and I remember you’ve always defended his working style, especially after reports of a few egos getting bruised during the filming of that film.
