Unique, haunting love letter to Hollywood myth and reality
sos1226 June 2011
A unique, almost unclassifiable mixture of ghost story and poetic mood piece, writer/director Steven Peros's FOOTPRINTS opens on a dazed young woman (Sybil Temtchine) who comes to her senses in the forecourt of the Chinese Theater, then follows her as she wanders up and down the boulevard trying to piece together who she is, how she got there and what her future might be. Besides the Chinese, the film touches on many familiar landmarks (to Angelenos, at least) of the real, geographical Hollywood: the Egyptian Theatre, Hollywood Book & Poster Company, the Scientology Center, tour guides and street performers. In that sense FOOTPRINTS is very much a movie about the actual Hollywood, a gaudy and more than slightly seedy neighborhood where people live and work. Peros shows a real knowledge and affection for the neighborhood: you can almost smell the exhaust coming off the boulevard and hear the sounds of people jostling and hawking up and down the street.

On a deeper level, though, FOOTPRINTS is about the Myth of Hollywood, the dreams and delusions that young hopefuls bring there. Dreams that sustain them through years of rejection and disappointment, and dreams that in the end can break them. In an extremely savvy bit of casting, Peros draws on two Hollywood survivors -- actor H.M. Wynant (a familiar face to fans of classic 1950's and 1960's TV from appearances in "The Wild Wild West," "Playhouse 90," "Perry Mason" and many others) and actress Pippa Scott (THE SEARCHERS, AUNTIE MAME, "The Virginian") -- to play key roles in the story. Wynant and Scott both lend a quiet grace and rueful charm to their parts, and when they talk about Hollywood you get the sense it comes from a lifetime of hard experience.

It's not too much of a stretch to compare the film to THE WIZARD OF OZ, with Temtchine's lost, amnesiac lead character standing in for Dorothy as she wakes up in a strange wonderland filled with sometimes helpful, sometimes sinister characters, and trying desperately to find her way "home," wherever that may be. FOOTPRINTS is also a ghost story of sorts (although definitely not a horror film) -- and especially in an indie film world too often filled with overly literal, kitchen-sink dramas, it's really refreshing to see an independent film that's as poetic and haunting as this one is.

Not just another film about Hollywood. Just another GREAT film about Hollywood.
Tenbenny@aol.com7 December 2009
I walked into this at a recent film festival, not expecting too much. The movie poster is a girl laying on the sidewalk...or maybe she is she sleeping. I couldn't tell. But, anyway, to the point. I LOVED this movie. It was sweet, imaginative, endearing... and most of all - REFRESHING. It has been so long since I've seen a film, even at a theater, let alone a festival, that has really stayed with me. But this one has. The writer/director delivers a very original and incredibly interesting take on show business, and all of her many pawns. Anybody who has a dream can get something out of this movie. It is truly inspiring.

Unexpectedly Sweet
swestley24 April 2011
Footprints, written and directed by Steven Peros (who also wrote the Peter Bogdanovich film The Cat's Meow), is a modern day fantasy, set in a town inspired by fantasy, and filled with a great many broken dreams. Sybil Temtchine is very affecting as a woman who wakes up one sunny morning on the footprints of Hollywood's famous Grauman's Chinese Theater. Ironically, or, perhaps, expectedly (?), the first person to greet her in this Tinseltown landmark is a rather irate, if comical, homeless person.

Our Gal, Temtchine's name in the credits, embarks on a journey of sorts to try to find out who she is. Not necessarily a heartwarming story, Footprints certainly tugs at your heartstrings, especially when we arrive at it's revelatory moment. And, without giving anything away, it is one of those moments that stays in your mind.

Wow...

It's mid-Dec. 2011 and we're just *now* getting this great little flick from 2009 in San Francisco?! What is up with that?! It gets a rave in today's Chronicle (Fri. Dec. 16), same day the new Rbt Downey Jr Sherlock Bombs flick gets totally trashed...but still gets a humongous front page, top-of-the fold photo placement...what the...? Brothers and sisters who love quirky, indie flicks that are well produced, acted and directed: Find this little beauty on DVD (the director and female lead were in the house for a really cool post-screening Q&A, and he said it'd be out on DVD soon). Can't wait to watch it again and share it w/friends. Go! Get! Enjoy!

An Inspiration

See this movie! I wasn't sure how I would feel going in and was so happy to find myself on a funny, unique and surprising journey up and down Hollywood Blvd. I won't spoil any plot points but audiences will have something to talk about after they leave the theater.Cool stuff. Hearing the director, cast and crew speak about it after the screening I have to say this is a must see for filmmakers who are tired of waiting for someone else to say yes to their project. When you see the quality of the performances, locations, camera work, costumes, everything top to bottom you can't help but find yourself inspired by what they achieved. Decide you won't be stopped and get it done, oh, and write a great script!

A Must See!
Ron-Mac3123 January 2010
It's something special when a film stays with you for awhile.

I caught a screening of "Footprints" with my friends at the Denver Fest last year.

We still talk about this finely-crafted indie when we get together. It resonates.

All of us were smitten by its charm and admired the film-making.

From the very opening sequence we were hooked and intrigued by its mystery.

We were particularly impressed with the lead's graceful and honest performance. We rooted for her during her journey every step of the way!

A beautiful film.

A must see.

Original and Engaging!

Storytelling at its best! Very imaginative. It has heart, it has drama, it has nostalgia. It makes me wonder about what it was like at another time in Hollywood. I'm still thinking about it. Writer-Director Steven Peros took a simple idea that not too many people would think about and turned it into a believable journey that every person can relate to. Every frame grabbed my attention and kept me going till the very end. The acting was very well done. It's film making at its best where there is no need for blow-ups, violence, or robots. I would see it again just to get re-inspired by the cinematography. I hope it inspires more film makers to make more films like this. See it.

"Footprints" Is A Fabulous Film! A Real 'Must See' Movie!
charnayj29 April 2010
"Footprints" is compelling cinema at its best! It is a remarkable accomplishment that such a fine film was produced in Hollywood...with a plot that takes place in Hollywood...for such a low budget.... Its great actors, dialogue, plot, cinematography, score and other artistic elements all worked wonderfully together to create an engaging story that also artfully manages to pay tribute to the film world of the past and present and future. It is a drama in the mystery/suspense /horror/thriller genre....and a great one at that. Bravo to its producer/writer Steven Peros for his virtuoso achievement and his superbly talented cast (especially Sybil Temtchine) for their outstanding performances.

a lovely nod to Hollywood and dreams
dextersmom-112 December 2009
Footprints is a gorgeous, elegant film that looks at Hollywood from a very different perspective. Steve Peros has created a magical world that is a love letter to the city of dreams. Not to be missed for anyone who loves films. The atmosphere of the movie is mysterious, charming and full of surprises. A mix of drama and heart, the actors bring to life an eclectic and wonderful mix of characters that take us on a journey over the period of one day. From the magical opening to the charming end Peros has a beautiful tone that draws you in and makes you want to know what happens next. Christopher Caliendo's score compliments the film with subtle gorgeous cues that work with the film and don't overpower it.

Great film!
doc-605-10610510 December 2009
I saw the film when it screened at the Denver Film Festival this November. It is beautifully framed, smartly directed, and interesting. It felt like the films of the 40s (almost film noir, but not as dark) superimposed with modern times. Comfortable, yet mysterious. Filmed in Hollywood, it covered many of the familiar sights that so represent the city, yet was never old nor boring. It was well paced and made sense, and actually had not just an end, but a satisfying ending, unlike many of the screened movies... There were many nuances and undercurrents that the viewer has to watch for, and I wish that I had been able to catch the second screening to enhance those that I had already picked up on. It can be as deep, or as shallow, as the viewer wants, but will never be boring. I highly recommend this film. Catch it if you can...

Not to be missed!
djbiz110 December 2009
It's rare that I see a film at a festival that stays with me for more than a day. Most have a quick gimmick or retread well worn territory but really have nothing much else of substance to them and are forgotten usually by the next morning.

"FOOTPRINTS" is a film that breaks this mold wide open. It's graceful, poetic and resonates like very few films ever do--be they in a festival or in a theater. It's very difficult to summarize or characterize the movie beyond saying that it touches you. It certainly touched me and has stayed with me since I saw it. I don't want to try to "summarize" what the film is about, it wouldn't do it justice. Suffice it to say, the performances are delicate and rich, the images beautifully realized and the story deeply compelling.

If you get a chance to see it--don't pass it up. I'm sure it will be at many festivals and certain it will be in the theaters one day soon.

a Hollywood extra returns from the past
mraynor971 May 2010
I really enjoyed the highly original film "Footprints" at the Egyptian Theater! It's very exciting to see a filmmaker step out and make a story that cannot be compared to any other. The gradual unveiling of all the mythological elements made for a very captivating story with the perfectly crafted pieces fitting together beautifully. At the end, the film's surprise makes sense. All of the characters were well drawn and well cast- the acting was very believable and fun. I look forward to the success of Footprints and other movies that Steven Peros will undoubtedly make in the future, hopefully again starring Sybil Temtchine, who definitely belongs in every frame!!

loved it!

I managed to catch a sneak preview of Footprints at the Egyptian and I was really touched by it. Writer-Director Steven Peros takes you on a magical, mystery tour up and down the famed boulevard that reaches into Hollywood's past and reaches out to Hollywood's future. Sybil Temtchine shines in the lead role, hitting all the right notes as you follow her journey. And John Brickner--as the flunky tour guide who tries to help out--shows why his is a name to remember. It's the kind of movie that seems to have a little something for everyone, just like the industry to which it pays homage. It's got wit, it's got charm, and it leaves you thinking. One of those movies you'll want to see again once you know how it ends. But next time I'll bring a date!

A terrific film!!!
Cutter8826 December 2009
I found "Footprints" to be an intelligent, beautiful, and compelling film. Confidently told, the film is not easily defined, which for me is one of it's many strengths. It evokes a world experienced "in-between-the-lines," a place of longing, unresolved issues, ambition, and hope. Somehow it looks both backwards to the nostalgia of old Hollywood, and forward to a new kind of ethereal, trans like film-making.

The writer/director did a great job on this unusual little gem. And I thought the performances were terrific. The lead actress especially gave a strong, nuanced and honest portrayal of a young woman lost and struggling between two worlds. The cinematography, scoring, and editing were also very good and helped the story tremendously. I really liked the music.

I'd love to see this film again in my local theater. When is it coming out?! I've already recommended it to my friends.
