Screenwriter Matt Lopez has signed with CAA for representation just ahead of the premiere of his adaptation of “Father of the Bride” for HBO Max. The new movie, starring Andy Garcia as the titular father, Gloria Estefan, Adria Arjona, and Isabela Merced, will debut on June 16, timed to Father’s Day Weekend.
Lopez also penned the script for another upcoming adaptation — this time, Walt Disney Studios’ “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” movie, with 21 Laps and the Jim Henson Company producing. Like “Father of the Bride,” the new movie will reportedly center a Latino family’s story. In 2020, Netflix acquired the rights to his spec feature script “Wraith,” based on the novel “Cyberstorm” by Matthew Mather. Sony Pictures is in early development on a new adaptation of the classic sitcom “Bewitched,” starring Elizabeth Montgomery.
Montgomery starred for eight seasons as Samantha Stephens, a witch married to an ordinary man named Darrin (Dick York and later Dick Sargent) and whose magical powers often cause — yet, sometimes solve — a few wrinkles in her life as a typical suburban housewife.
Created by Sol Saks, under executive producer Harry Ackerman, “Bewitched” ran from 1964 to 1972 on ABC and was a defining example of the genre. Its spinoff, “Tabitha” (focused on Samantha and Darren’s daughter), ran for one season.
The new film comes from producers John Davis and John Fox with a script written by Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett. Matalas has an overall deal at CBS and is currently co-running “Star Trek: Picard.” The quartet is also developing the “Witch Mountain” remake for Disney Plus.

Florida Georgia Line member Brian Kelley’s plan to bring a country-music musical to life as a legit stage production is now extending to a movie version that is being developed simultaneously.
Kelley and his partners announced not just a film iteration of “May We All” — whose planned staging has been put off due to the pandemic — but the director who’s been tapped for a movie version: Andy Fickman, whose credits include directing and exec-producing CBS’ TV series “Kevin Can Wait” as well as a number of feature films and stage productions.
The stage version, announced in Variety in 2019, was set for a developmental production at Memphis’ Playhouse in the Square in fall 2020, to have been followed by an official Nashville premiere in 2021. As lockdowns have pushed any of these stage debuts further back, producers decided to move up a film adaptation.

Dwayne Johnson became the biggest, most marketable and highest-paid star in the industry by relying entirely on the strength of his personal brand, which has worked wonders for him over the last two decades. Not all of his movies are what you would call classics, but they tend to do solid business at the box office despite many of them being completely indistinguishable from each other.
If you were asked to name one Dwayne Johnson film where he played a character in a beige shirt who was caught in a race against time to avoid a catastrophic event while forced to battle various CGI critters, would you choose Race to Witch Mountain, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, sequel The Next Level, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island or Rampage?

Exclusive: The Disney live action team is in early development on a reboot of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day with Matt Lopez writing. 21 Laps and Jim Henson Company, who produced the first film, will return as producers. The film will be developed for Disney+.
The original film is based on the Judith Viorst children’s book and is considered one of the more popular children books of all time. Disney’s first film starred Steve Carell as Alexander’s dad and followed the young boy as he went through a truly tough day when it starts with him realizing that the gum he fell asleep chewing is now hopelessly tangled in his hair, and things get worse from there, to the point he threatens to chuck it all and move to Australia.

Dwayne Johnson is no stranger to sci-fi, having tackled a number of different roles in almost every imaginable twist on the genre, and the results have been unsurprisingly inconsistent. After first dipping his toes into the water when he was still a full-time professional wrestler in a 2000 episode of Star Trek: Voyager, his next foray into sci-fi couldn’t have gone much worse.
Richard Kelly’s Southland Tales was a bizarre abomination that reeked of intentionally abstract self-indulgence and rode a wave of critical apathy to a box office total of less than $375,000. From there, Johnson has revisited the genre in the form of tedious video game adaptation Doom, the bland and forgettable Race to Witch Mountain remake, completely ignored animation Planet 51 and the surprisingly entertaining Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

A “Father of the Bride” film remake with a Cuban American twist is in development at Warner Bros, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
Screenwriter Matt Lopez is penning the script for the romantic comedy. For the remake, Lopez will draw on his experience from attending Cuban weddings. Executives Jesse Ehrman and Paul Perez will oversee development of the project at the studio.
“Father of the Bride” was a remake of the 1950 original film which starred Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor. The 1991 version of the film starred Steve Martin as George Banks as a dotting father who is reluctant to let go of his daughter when he discovers that she is getting married. Diane Keaton also starred in the 1991 film as George’s wife Nina.

Warner Bros is putting the wheels in motion on new Father of the Bride movie, with Matt Lopez penning the script. This latest reboot will revolve around a Latinx family, a first for the franchise.
This marks the third retelling of the story that began with the Spencer Tracy original in 1950 and was most recently remade by Disney in 1991 starring Steve Martin. That film spawned a sequel in 1995.
The latest film will tell the story of a father coming to grips with his daughter’s upcoming wedding through the prism of multiple relationships within a big, sprawling Cuban-American family. It will be more of a rom-com than previous versions of film.
Sources say Lopez was inspired by his own cross-cultural nuptials and the many epic Cuban weddings he has attended, some of which he’s still recovering from.
Jesse Ehrman and Paul Perez will oversee for Warners.

Another turbulent week in the world of cinemas: If you thought the recent backlash against Universal and AMC after they shook hands on a deal to shorten the theatrical window on certain mid-level titles was strong, think again, as evidenced this week when Disney dropped a bomb in announcing that it would bypass cinemas entirely by placing Mulan directly on Disney+. Deadline spoke to UK cinema owners, who called it a “f**k you to exhibitors,” while we also tracked down a Parisian operator who took a baseball bat to a Mulan pop-up poster.

July has been off to a great start for Disney Plus, especially with awesome new additions like The Mighty Ducks, The Big Green, and Race to Witch Mountain to get the nostalgia train running. Speaking of which, after debuting on Friday, Hamilton has made its way comfortably to the very top of Disney Plus’ trending chart with no signs of giving up its spot anytime too soon. This fantastic performance with the principal cast...

Dwayne Johnson fans who also have Disney Plus, we’ve got news for you. One of The Rock’s most forgotten movies has just arrived on the Mouse House’s streaming service. Race to Witch Mountain is a reboot of Disney’s Witch Mountain franchise that originated in the 70s, about a pair of teenage aliens with psychic powers trying to get home. That central premise is retained for this 21st reimagining that features AnnaSophia Robb and Alexander Ludwig as Sara and Seth, the aforementioned extraterrestrial adolescents.

Despite only launching in November, Disney Plus has already brought in nearly 55 million subscribers, who’ve been enjoying all of their content hailing from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Star Wars franchise, Pixar, almost their entire back catalogue of animated films and much, much more.
However, it’s fair to say that when it comes to original material, Disney Plus hasn’t been bringing us very much. Sure, The Mandalorian was a major hit, but apart from that, none of their in-house projects have really stirred up any buzz. Unless, of course, you want to count Artemis Fowl, which has been making waves for all the wrong reasons.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like things will be improving on that front anytime soon, either. The Mouse House has just announced what’s headed our way in July and as you can see below, the list is lacking when it comes to buzzy original titles.
However, it’s fair to say that when it comes to original material, Disney Plus hasn’t been bringing us very much. While Netflix continues to add a lot of great content, including some new original series for the summer, the platform is also going to be losing parts of its library. In particular, July will see The Matrix trilogy depart the service for the newly launched HBO Max, with some other Warner Bros. movies also making their way over to the fledgling subscription rival. What titles, then, are no longer going to be available on Netflix come July?
Well, among the films that are leaving next month, notable pics include Cloverfield, The Curse of Benjamin Button and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, as well as the majority of the Tremors franchise. Another big Warner Bros. title, Christopher Nolan’s Inception, will also be removed, part of what’s becoming a mass transfer of content over to HBO Max as the rival looks to compete with Netflix on its back-catalogue of movies. Other high-profile losses include Ghost Rider,...

With his towering height and stature, Alexander Ludwig looks every bit the action star, first appearing as Cato in “The Hunger Games,” and more recently as fierce Norse Viking chief Bjorn Ironside on History Channel’s “Vikings” and in “Bad Boys for Life,” the third installment of the “Bad Boys” franchise, with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.
But despite a superhero-esque appearance, Ludwig has been candid about his own personal struggles. Almost a year ago, in a 15-minute long video that was part of the “Bite the Bullet Stories” series, Ludwig, 27, candidly revealed his path to sobriety, which includes a stint in rehab in his early 20s. He had his first drink at age 14.
“I’m very proud of the decision I made to seek help when I was younger because I needed to. And at the time it was a huge risk for me, both professionally and financially,” Ludwig tells Variety.

"No shenanigans under my watch!" Paramount has debuted an official trailer for Playing with Fire, a new comedy from the director of such classics as She's the Man, Race to Witch Mountain, You Again, and Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2. John Cena stars in this as a "stern, no-nonsense firefighter captain" who, along with his elite team of "smoke jumpers" firemen, becomes the temporary guardians of three rambunctious kids - Brynn played by Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead from Deadpool), Will played by Christian Convery, and Zoey played by Finley Rose Slater. Sounds like a fun one, right? Get ready for some awkward laughs. The cast includes Keegan-Michael Key, John Leguizamo, Tyler Mane, and Judy Greer. This is one of those high concept, fun-for-everyone studio comedies that you'll either love or hate. Honestly, the big dog is probably going to be the best part about it - which isn't a bad thing.

From new shows and movies, to shows and movies leaving the service, it's becoming increasingly difficult to keep up to speed on all the movers and shakers.

The biggest premiere on the streaming giant in the month of July will likely be Stranger Things Season 3, which is getting a Thursday launch on July 4th.
The extra long weekend should give viewers ample time to binge the eight-episode third season of the sci-fi drama.
