"Its not cricket"

Cricket is held up by some in England as the 'Touch Stone' of 'Society' marking what it is and means to be English.. Indeed its particularly apt to have the tune Jerusalem, sign off this episode.

This episode revolves around something that could be considered by some as distinctly un English, a Coup in the Cricket Club.

Between two English archetypes Alex and Roger, for the first time competing to be Club Captain.

Both men assumes that he personifies England, in an odd way they do a particular type of England. Pompous, stuck in the past, and totally out of touch with reality.

Alex pretending to be of "the Old School" but, stupidly doing it where he can be found out.

Cricket also still stands as something of a Bastion of male Society, men on their proclaimed "Field of Battle". With their lady wives doing the catering.

Dennis attitude towards his better half Shirley being fairly typical, and indeed 'Par for the Course'.

Mixing my sports if not my metaphors, but not to be outdone Shirley manages to have the last word in rather spectacular fashion.

A final point on the show Outside Edge on the whole, not being particularly fond of cricket as a sport the significance of the title totally eluded me.

But it doesn't stop me thoroughly enjoying the show, because its a great comedy of people and of their foibles.

I mentioned this because of a comment about the show possibly by an American, that the title could be off putting to presumably Americans.

But his suggestion of I think Whirling Dervish is far from "more familiar" than what pray?

The "focus" of the show is of course cricket as its about a cricket club. The blokes comment about "cookie cutter" neighbourhood and lives, speaks volumes to me of his own life stateside.

The show is about these wally's lives or what, they consider to be an important part of it.

We are looking at them via this interest cricket, this frames their very lives and relationships.
