A series murderer executes a killing spree ; full of gore , guts , jokes and black humor
ma-cortes28 December 2016
Fun picture plenty of killings , thrills , chills , amusement , ironical touches , and usual Zombies . Bárbara (Macarena Gómez) is a co-ed of a prestigious medicine university . She is a femme fatale fashionista at a trendy design school who embarks on a brutal and bloody killing spree . Meanwhile , Tomás (César Camíno) and Alex (Alejo Sauras) are experimenting about broadcasting vital images , these experiments lead to unexpected consequences .

Lots of gags and sketches , some of them funny but movie lacks a real freshness . Spoof movie with a myriad of silly and unimaginative gags , though it has its good moments here and there . And blending audio-visual narrative , as television style as advertisement spots ; in addition , comic-books esthetic and Split-screen (similarly to ¨Hulk¨ , 2003, by Ang Lee) . ¨Sexy Killer¨ is more a nutty comedy than a terror movie . This is a hilarious parody/crime , surrealist , extreme spoof and gross out but is also intelligent and bold . As always , the cinematographic references are numerous and provide silly laughs from start to finish , the amusement is guess what films result to be , as there are several cinematic remarks from famous movies , such as : ¨Carrie¨(at the prologue) , ¨13th Friday¨ , ¨Taxi Driver¨ , ¨Crocodrile Dundee¨ , ¨Dead Evil¨ , ¨From dusk to dawn¨, ¨Scream¨, and including the gore-feast-surgery of ¨Reanimator¨ and splatter of ¨Braindead¨.

Fun acting by Macarena Gómez as a feisty and lethal psycho-killer fashion victim, while gleefully evading the hapless cops assigned to the murder cases . Sexykiller character is a crossover of a fashion young Hannibal Lecter and Patrick Bateman including the Paris Hilton wardrobe style. She is supported by known TV actors as Alejo Sauras , César Camino , Ramón Langa and the veteran , recently deceased Angel Andrés López who played along with Macarena Gómez in ¨Platillos Volantes¨. Besides , Javier Botet who played the girl Medeiros in ¨Rec¨saga by Jaime Balagueró and Paco Plaza .

Appropriate and colorful cinematography by Carlos Gusi who has photographed hits as ¨Torrente¨, ¨Box 507¨ , ¨Cell 211¨ , ¨Take my eyes¨ , and ¨El Niño¨ . Gusi photographs splendidly the wonderful exteriors from Comillas , Cantabria where ¨Sexykilller¨ was colorfully shot . Moving musical score by Fernando Velazquez who previously composed for successful terror/thriller films as ¨The orphanage¨ , ¨For the good of others¨ , ¨Julia's eyes¨ and ¨Devil¨ . .Amusing and surprising screenplay by Pablo Cabezas . Paco is a good screen-writer such as ¨Bon Appetit¨ (2010) , ¨Spanish movie¨(2009) , ¨Sexy killer¨(2008) and a notorious filmmaker , especially known for Carne Neón (2010), and his first feature length project : ¨Aparecidos¨ (2007) , being subsequently hired by Hollywood/Nicolas Cage , where directed Tokarev (2014) . Furthermore , ¨Men with No Fear¨ and ¨Mr. Right¨ with big Hollywood name stars . This motion picture titled ¨Sexykiller¨(firstly titled Barbykiller) was professionally directed by Miguel Martí , an expert on crazy comedies , as he proved in ¨Slam¨ and ¨Fin De Curso¨ . ¨SexyKiller¨ had world premiere in 2008 Toronto Film Festival and in the Official Section in Sitges Festival . However , some reviewers panned it , describing it as a cheap pastiche .

Pure sensual candy

Warning: Spoilers
"Sexy Killer," is a Spanish genre bending film. The title begets a great deal of what the film is about, yet leaves some major developments a surprise for the viewer. As a whole, this is nowhere near perfect film making. It is however, an engrossing movie that meets most technical expectations and exceeds a few expectations regarding story. SK does not take itself seriously, as long as the audience follows suit, the movie is very enjoyable.

The goal of this film is to present the absurdist story of a female serial killer who must deal with her own views on killing, love, and zombies. In addition, the film does put forth some mild social commentary regarding consumerism and the role of determination in one's life. At this point, hopefully a potential viewer is interested, yet understands that this film is resigned to hyperbole and shocking visuals.

As with all movies, SK relies on a few assumptions to keep its narrative engine going. The first is that murder as a whole is easy to get away with. The heroine kills a great many people in some very public ways and just cannot get caught. Any sense of realism is quickly jettisoned so that the audience can focus on the quirks and endearing behaviors of the sociopathic heroine. A second assumption is that whatever needs to happen surely will. The film as a whole is somewhat dues ex machine. On the surface this sounds like a terrible script or story. The actuality is that the film is an almost stream of consciousness ride through absurd crime/horror/zombie genre mixing. The effect is very humorous and at times laugh out loud funny. Following from the previous example, the film requires that the audience be open to and accepting of zombification via "brain machine" and the drug ecstasy. How does it work? What does it mean for the world of the film? These are questions that go unanswered and frankly shouldn't even be asked.

There are three noticeable and annoying faults with the film. First, the Spanish dialog is very fast. Being a non-Spanish speaker, this lead to some difficulties with the sub-titling. A cautionary note, be prepared to read very quickly. Second, at some points the CGI is outright laughably bad. Depending on view, this may not be a fault. I found the poor quality funny but also somewhat of a cheap cop out from more creative story telling techniques. Lastly, the messages about consumerism and determinism are reduced in weight due to the story telling style. Attempting a serious social commentary while having tongue firmly stuck in cheek leads to what would literally happen: garbled speech.

The film does overcome the above faults. As a whole, the story is well paced and the audience is given very little time to be bored or quietly contemplative. The characters, albeit strange, are developed to the point that they are not two dimensional fluff. Rather, the characters are a likable mixture of faults and strengths balanced by idiosyncratic personality. In essence, the film as a whole is funny, exciting, and filled with interesting visuals. If you are a fan of mild satire, zombies, and attractive people doing strange things, this is the film for you.

On a personal note, I will be pushing this film on friends until I am yelled at for being obnoxious. This is a film you should see. 6.5 stars out of ten.

TIFF 08: Like killing, but backwards…Sexykiller, morirás por ella
jaredmobarak17 September 2008
Warning: Spoilers
It is going to be very hard to delineate the film Sexykiller from the experience I had seeing it. My screening at the Toronto International Film Festival was the first time I had ever been to a Midnight Madness event. The atmosphere was fantastic, the theatre filled with kindred souls, all ready to have a blast and check their brains at the door. While we waited in line for seats, a couple people dressed in makeup as zombies walked by, talking to themselves about where they should go, and do the people in charge know that the zombies had arrived? Right then we knew we were in store for a good time, they had hired "actors" to pose with the director and lead actress on the red carpet, adding that much more fun to the evening. Before the film started rolling, director Miguel Martí and actress Macarena Gómez took the stage and introduced their work. Definitely excited to see the finished product for the first time with an audience, Martí was beyond words, as far as his grasp of English went, reverting to Spanish with a brief translation from Gómez. The stage was set and the fun was just starting.

Our entrance to the film is of course inside a women's locker room. How much more clichéd can you get for a horror/slasher flick? There is gratuitous nudity, some funny quips, and did I mention gratuitous nudity? When it appears all the girls have left, in comes someone dressed up like the killer from Scream. He goes through the locker room looking for naked girls, waving his knife around until he finds Gómez's Barbara screaming and running away. It all starts here as we discover the "killer" is just a boy from the school trying to see unclothed girls and the victim Barbara is in fact the sexy killer of the title, unafraid to show her constitution for blood and carnage.

It is a hokey beginning that the audience completely ate up. I will admit that I wasn't necessarily impressed, it all seemed obvious although mildly humorous. We next arrive at the school and are introduced to Barbara's clique of friends, an interesting mix of people just finding out about the murder of their fallen classmate. It is no match for the excitement about a costume party happening that evening, though, one which sees our killer dress up in goth and carry a see-through bag, of course containing her latest victim's real decapitated head. Moving down the street she encounters a gentleman driving recklessly who proceeds to anger her, something you don't want to do. She asks if he wants to dance, as in fight, and continues to twist his arm around, break his fingers, and shoving a sharp object through his hand to hold him to the car. It is all well and good until something happens that truly grabbed my attention … Barbara turns to the screen and talks directly to us, the audience, deciding where to begin her tale, the journey that led to that moment. We now are treated to flashbacks with the occasional return to her and her captive to narrate and keep us up to speed. I'll admit, I'm a sucker for fourth wall breaking, it just makes the film experience that much more visceral, involving me on a personal level. I loved it in films like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and I definitely enjoyed its flair here.

At this point, one would figure that the slasher aspect will carry on until the end, deaths will pile up and laughs will be had. Instead, however, Tomás is brought into the fold, having just created a machine that will allow the user to see a deceased person's final vision, most likely his murderer. Of course things can't be that simple as we soon learn the injection used causes the rebirth of the victim into a zombie, coherent and aware of his previous life, fueling even more funny moments. The rest of the movie involves these plot threads as Barbara looks sexy and kills without remorse. It is a lot of laughs and a good time, especially with the uproarious crowd on hand trying to make the director and actress in attendance feel great, but it just isn't all that special in my book. There is a wealth of gore-fests, playing on the irony and humor of graphic death, and Sexykiller doesn't necessarily separate itself from the pack.

My favorite scene comes at another time, when Barbara and Tómas, a nice turn from César Camino, are on a date. His working with his machine in a morgue with dead bodies allows the conversation to veer to a point where she believes him to also be a killer. After seeing a dress she wanted on a woman going to the bathroom, Barbara follows her in and kills her, taking the dress and returning to her table. Tómas of course believes this to be a joke and when she says he should go for the tuxedo that just walked into the men's room, he jumps at the chance to impress her. Once he enters the bathroom, the exchange between he and the man he is "supposed to kill" is absolutely hilarious. From the line of Tómas begging for the suit because he will never get a woman as hot as Barbara again to the question of whether they are both Trekkies, I couldn't stop laughing. There are definite moments of brilliance, but I honestly can't say I truly loved a film of this kind; there are just too many inherent problems with the genre and preconceptions creating a stigma of campy schlock. Better than it should have been, however, I will recommend it for a good time late night.

No walls
kosmasp8 November 2009
The movie is almost to clever for itself. Breaking the 4th wall very early on, it still tries to be a "relatively" normal movie. It's a parody of course, but as it is very self-aware and self-conscious, the jokes are hit and miss.

It's a nice change to have a woman being in the lead role, in a movie like this, but in the end, even that joke is worn off, pretty quickly. It's actually pretty silly and you can have a lot of fun, if you stop thinking about a few things. So just try to enjoy it if you can and not see the many mistakes/flaws the story has. A funny horror movie that dares to be bloody and funny at the same time then ...

The type of film best enjoyed with a few cervezas.
BA_Harrison10 October 2014
Having overheard him talking about cutting up bodies, sexy serial killer Bárbara (Macarena Gómez) gets the hots for pathologist Álex (Alejo Sauras), believing him to be a kindred spirit. Álex, blissfully unaware of the lovely lady's true nature, is more than happy for the attention, but his life gets a whole lot more complicated after he tests his experimental brain impulse decoder on Bárbara's victims in an attempt to discover the killer's identity: the machine has the unfortunate side-effect of bringing the dead back to life as ravenous zombies!

Sexykiller, from Spanish director Miguel Martí, definitely doesn't have any lofty pretencions: it simply wants to be a whole load of schlocky fun for the midnight movie crowd—and in that it mostly succeeds. From opening immediately with a changing room scene full of hot Latino girls in various states of undress, to breaking the fourth wall by having sexy psycho Bárbara talk to the viewer, to impromptu song and dance routines, to the sudden switch from serial killer flick to zombie movie, to the copious amounts of gore, there is plenty here to lend the film cult appeal. Director Marti does seem to be trying just a little too hard to please at times, some of the morbid humour and absurdist elements feeling a bit strained, so the film is probably best watched with a few cervezas in the belly, when it's easy to be more lenient about such things.

Bizarre Spanish comedy horror
Leofwine_draca25 April 2015
SEXY KILLER is a one-of-a-kind Spanish production that tells the story of the titular character, a female serial killer who goes around bumping off everybody who falls foul of her. The story is told in a light-hearted and jokey way despite the copious amounts of spraying bloodshed and gore, with the star frequently breaking the fourth wall of cinema by turning to address the viewer.

It's a simplistic tale but a madcap one, packed with high energy. The narrative is jiggled with so that various parts are told in flashback, perhaps to hide what would otherwise be a predictable tale. The main issue I had with it was that I found chief actress Macarena Gomez's acting to be a bit lacking and her character to be entirely unsympathetic; if they'd somehow managed to make the killer a likable creation then this would have been a lot better.

Still, things do pick up in the second half, with a twist in the story bringing zombies to play, and then we get some BRAINDEAD-style mayhem in the big climax. Horror fans will enjoy the many and frequent references to classics of the genre, but make no mistake, this is a simple black comedy done up to look like more than it is.

American Psycho on Acid

This is the movie that would have resulted if a Spanish fashion designer had adapted American Psycho whilst on acid. Full of jokes and nods to the genre (not all of which work), but this is still well worth a watch.

A bit too silly but has some good moments
Stevieboy66625 January 2020
Barbara is a university student who enjoys killing people even more than she enjoys sex, and as the bodies pile up the hunt is on for the Campus Killer. The opening scene spoofs Scream in a girls' changing room, good start. Sadly it soon went downhill for me when she starts narrating a series of flashbacks to her next victim. Later on a bunch of zombies get added to the mix, making this a slasher/zombie spoof. It does get rather silly and the film tries to cram in too much. It is quite fast paced, being Spanish language I found it a little hard at times reading the subtitles and trying to see what was happening at the same time. The comedy side does get too much at times but there is plenty of gore to help balance it out. I won't be giving it a second viewing.

Very entertaining Spanish horror-comedy
Red-Barracuda11 October 2016
The opening scene in this film gives a pretty good indication of the philosophy of the film-makers. In it we have a group of hot semi-naked young women in a changing room, while an ominous character in a Scream mask looks on from a secret location; it ends with the tables being turned and the intruder being killed by one of the cute girls. The reason that this scene indicates what this film is all about is that it ridicules clichés of the horror genre while simultaneously celebrating them. This Spanish horror-comedy is a film that resolutely does not take itself seriously. It feels a bit like Pieces (1982) meets Re-Animator (1984) with a female serial killer. The story revolves around a series of university campus killings carried out by a medical student called Bárbara. But that's only half the story as it also includes a development later in the story where a new serum is introduced that has the ability of bringing back the dead, meaning that all the killers victims return as flesh-eating zombies. So, it would be fair to say that this one certainly tries to cover its horror bases that's for sure.

The lead is Macarena Gómez who gives a good performance here. The role is one that offers a fair bit of fun with the character frequently breaking the fourth wall to tell us her story. The jokes are sometimes very good too, my favourite one being the fact that some male zombies can only be dispatched by shooting them in the penis rather than the traditional target of the head on account of the fact that 'some men only think with their dicks!' The combination of a slasher movie with a zombie flick is one that is of course completely absurd but it essentially works here in a film that is wilfully ridiculous from the outset. It's a fast-paced and amusing movie which at least tries to come up with something new, even if it does just mash genres up in order to do this. Definitely an entertaining film though and one which seems to have gone under the radar somewhat which doesn't seem right and, ultimately, you can't go too wrong with a premise involving a hot girl serial killer.

This girl is pretty kinky. This girl's a super-freak!
Coventry3 May 2009
This movie materializes the ultimate definition of a crowd-pleaser. I watched "Sexy Killer" in a practically sold-out theater at the Brussels International Fantasy Film Festival and the whole audience literally went out of their minds with enthusiasm and delirium. This is a pleasantly deranged, no-barrels-held, unscrupulous and 100% original miscellany of bloody horror and vulgar comedy; easily the most flamboyant movie of its type of the last 10 years or so. Many movies ambitiously try to mix horror and comedy ingredients but miserably fail, whereas "Sexy Killer" succeeds without seemingly too much efforts. I won't claim all gags and comical references are equally triumphant, but generally speaking this Spanish movie from director Miguel Martí ("Fin de Curso") and writer Paco Cabezas ("The Appeared") is a genuine winner and I hope it will find popularity and distribution outside of the Festival circuit as well. The main trump of the film is undoubtedly lead actress Macarena Gómez and her unique depiction of the eccentric yet lovable protagonist character Barbara. She's a medical student with the vanity and obnoxious ego of Paris Hilton and the homicidal tendencies of Ted Bundy. Barbara addresses to the camera and explains in great detail how she commits the murders and why (kind of like in "Man Bites Dog" but even sillier) and she considers herself to be a very normal twenty-something girl with normal needs and desires. She doesn't even need to cover up her serial killing crimes, because who would ever suspect a cute, fragile and cherubic looking student like her? But then our serial killer queen falls in love, and her brainiac-boyfriend just invented a device that brings all of Barbara's murder victims back to life as vengeful zombies. Will she be stolid enough to kill them all again and live happily ever with her boyfriend? Miguel Martí and Paco Cabezas are obviously two completely horror-obsessed geeks, as they processed a massive number of tributes, inside jokes and references towards several classics of the genre into their screenplay. The fact they couldn't decide to make a serial killer movie or a zombie flick and then simply combined the two themes into one demented movie should already say enough about their devotion to the world of horror. "Sexy Killer" is an unceasingly entertaining movie, with colorful characters and typical horror clichés that are deliberately magnified to emphasize the comedic effect. There's the stalk-and-slaughter scene at the girls' locker room at the beginning (with a fantastic twist), the zombie resurrecting sequence at the morgue, the fraternity house party turning into a bloodbath near the end and much, much more! The gore effects are explicit, the sleaze is gratuitous and the humor is often crude and tasteless, but yet this movie remains accessible and hilarious at all times. See this film, if possible with friends and a truckload of alcohol and you will have a guaranteed blast.

Parody that gets on ones nerves, but improves.
TdSmth511 March 2011
What starts off as a slasher parody ends up as a zombie movie going through a morgue and Re-Animator phases. The first couple of minutes of Sexykiller are quite charming as a slasher threatens a campus. Early on we find out that the slasher is a girl named Barbara, a medical student. Her dog is names Jason- just one of the many horror movie references- and when the dog is run over, she grabs the driver and proceeds to tell us how she ended up being a killer. At that point things go downhill quickly. The parody is piled on exaggerated strokes, the cast starts breaking out in song, there are infomercial parodies, it goes on and on, we find out a bit about her childhood and teen years. Cops arrive to investigate the crimes. Two other students created a device to visualize people's dreams and also serves to show what a victim saw during their last minutes. They hope to be able to catch the killer that way.

Barbara and one of these guys fall in love but don't express it till later. Meanwhile, the guys realize that their device when used on the dead, brings them back to live and turns them into zombies. Throughout the movie no one realizes that Barbara, who is not all that subtle about her murderous inclination, is the killer. Fortunately the parody elements slowly fade away and the movie becomes more of a good comedy with serious horror elements.

Overall, the script is smart, the parody is not all funny though. It becomes a bit funnier once it settles for comedy. The movie is gory though, and if this crew would have gone for a straightforward horror movie or a mild horror comedy, they could created a pretty good movie.

A serial killer to cheer for!
doug-69714 September 2008
Sexy Killer is a Spanish comedy about a woman who as the title states is a serial killer and very sexy. Can she continue her work of killing and find love?

This movie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival Sept 12th 2008 and was received very positively in both showings. Festival audiences generally greet films warmly, but both audiences were exceptionally enthusiastic about this film. In the showing I attended people laughed throughout and there were even a couple instances were they applauded DURING the movie, which is a rare thing. And this was even considering that it was being seen by a largely English-speaking audience and it's in Spanish with sub-titles!

I think what made people respond so strongly was first, the movie was just a huge amount of fun. If there was slow boring moment in the movie I wasn't aware of it. Secondly was the serial killer herself, played charismatically by Macarena Gomez, who is so unapologetic, certain in her own justification for killing, so gleeful in her work, that you can't help but hope the best for her! You may even find yourself cheering for her!!

While Sexy Killer, does reference a few Hollywood horror films, it is far more than a parody and stands on it's own a good solid comedy. There are some gory moments in the movie (a couple of which get huge laughs), so it might not be OK for very young children but it is all played for fun.

This was my last movie of the Festival and a great way to end it!
