Exclusive: Vertical Entertainment has tapped Good Deed Entertainment’s Kristin Harris for the newly created position of Senior Vice President, Production and Development.
Harris will lead the company’s emerging production and development arm, reporting to Vertical Partners Peter Jarowey and Rich Goldberg beginning March 14. She most recently served as Executive Vice President, Distribution and Operations for the boutique studio Good Deed, there overseeing and managing all content and distribution operations for a slate of six to 10 films per year, including Extra Ordinary, Lucky Grandma, Summertime, Ma Belle, My Beauty and the Academy Award-nominated Loving Vincent.
“It should come as no surprise, film financing is a key area of expansion for us, and frankly, for all of our competitors across the globe. Vertical needed to find the right executive to help build out that sector of our business which is extremely nuanced and labor-intensive,” said Jarowey and Goldberg in a joint statement.

Hulu’s list of new releases for June 2021 is highlighted by a host of useful library titles and one fascinating original film.
The original film in question is the one that lends its delightful photo of Pierce Brosnan delivering a baby to this post. False Positive stars and was written by Ilana Glazer (Broad City). It sounds like a really fun, creepy time with a synopsis that reads: “After months of trying and failing to get pregnant, Lucy (Glazer) and Adrian (Justin Theroux) finally find their dream fertility doctor in the illustrious Dr. Hindle (Pierce Brosnan). But after becoming pregnant with a healthy baby girl, Lucy begins to notice something sinister through Hindle’s gleaming charm, and she sets out to uncover the unsettling truth about him, and her own “birth story.” Cool!
Hulu’s other original offerings aren’t too inspiring this month. Only Love, Victor season 2 on June 11 moves the needle much.

Helena Bonham Carter and Pierce Brosnan are set to star in a romantic comedy called “Not Bloody Likely” that tracks the true story of a 1914 production of George Bernard Shaw’s “Pygmalion,” the story that would eventually become the musical “My Fair Lady.”
“Last Chance Harvey” director Joel Hopkins will direct the film that is being presented to buyers at the American Film Market. Production hopes to begin on the film in the U.K. in spring 2021.
Brosnan will star as Shaw, who is determined to get actress Pat Campbell (Bonham Carter) to play the role of Eliza Doolittle in his now-classic play. But his real intention is to woo her and rekindle their past love. The whole story is seen through the eyes of a young producing assistant who is tasked with finding a “real” Flower Girl who might help Campbell become Eliza, only to spark his own romance.

Rupert Penry-Jones and Daniel Lapaine.
When Daniel Lapaine and Essie Davis were fellow students at Nida in the early 1990s, one less arduous element of the course was fencing lessons.
Neither could have imagined, all these years later, they would be jousting again in Every Cloud Productions’ Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears.
Lapaine plays rich aristocrat Lord “Lofty” Lofthouse, an old friend of Essie’s Phyrne Fisher, in the Tony Tilse-directed murder-mystery/adventure/romance, which opens on Thursday.
Phyrne and Shirin Abbas (2016 Vca graduate Isabella Yella), a young Bedouin girl whom she rescued from prison in Jerusalem, go to the UK to stay at the manor owned by Lord and Lady Lofthouse (Jacqueline McKenzie) and Lofty’s younger brother Jonathon (Rupert Penry-Jones).

Calling a film “Hampstead” invites immediate comparisons with “Notting Hill,” the Richard Curtis-penned rom-com that put that particular West London enclave on the global map back in 1999.
Director Joel Hopkins may be hoping for similar success, although I doubt the fine residents of Hampstead itself are looking forward to an influx of foreign tourists along their leafy and quaint streets.
In any case, the area of north London’s Hampstead on which this film focuses is the Heath, a great expanse of wood and wild park land that immediately features in the movie’s twinkling opening sequence, following a child’s kite as it flies across the Heath’s famous views of the city skyline, floating above picnicking families, striding dog walkers, pert joggers and recumbent lovers. It’s a shot, I suppose, intended to rival Hugh Grant’s “walk through the seasons” along Portobello Market in “Notting Hill.

Diane Keaton is one of those actresses whose presence in a film immediately piques the interest. Director Joel Hopkins’ latest film follows up the similar themes of Last Chance Harvey with Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson and The Love Punch with Pierce Brosnan and Thompson again. Hampstead has Keaton and Brendan Gleeson as two people who live by the famous London landmark. One in a magnificent townhouse and the other in a shack. The film kicks off when a property developer wants to demolish the shack, and the pair find their differences melt away as they realise they have more in common than they thought.

Diane Keaton is filming in Hampstead Heath, providing a cinematic sheen to a new part of the capital. But it’s a big city: here’s where Hollywood should go next
Notting Hill (the movie) is now 16 years old. That’s 16 years of attention that Notting Hill (the place) never really deserved. The success of that film meant that hundreds of thousands of foreign tourists must have found themselves travelling three stops further down the Central line than they really needed to, only to spend 15 minutes getting drizzled on outside M&S while they looked for Hugh Grant, then glumly going home again.
But all that might be about to end. The director of Last Chance Harvey – itself a Notting Hill for the South Bank in all but name – has just persuaded Diane Keaton and Brendan Gleeson to star in a film called Hampstead. It’s about an American widow...

After 2009’s Last Chance Harvey and 2014’s The Love Punch, director Joel Hopkins is turning into somewhat of a specialist in later-life love stories and the complications that arise. He’s dipping into that well again for Hampstead, which will star Diane Keaton and Brendan Gleeson as people who make a connection in unlikely circumstances. Robert Festinger is behind the script, which was inspired by a true story and developed at Ecosse Films. Keaton will star as Emily Walters, an American widow living on the edge of Hampstead Heath who, despite close friendships and a nice flat, can’t help but worry that she’s drifting through life without a plan. One day, while looking out across the grasslands and trees, she spots a ramshackle hut and its unkempt occupant, who appears to be having trouble with violent attackers. After calling the police and watching them arrive, she goes to check on the man.

Love Paunch: Hopkins’ Latest a Predictable Bore
Though its cast members seem to game for a good, silly romp, Joel Hopkins’ latest film, The Love Punch, sadly, is not such a treat. Reuniting with star Emma Thompson from his last outing, 2008’s Last Chance Harvey, this discordant rom-com caper has all the charm of a lobotomized poodle; fluffy and without all the necessary faculties to function. To use the phrase ‘by-the-numbers’ would be a generous euphemism for when their charm can’t seem to pick up the slack, the addlepated antics being performed by such talented performers is often off-putting. It’s a film of the ilk that people make comments such as, “Oh wasn’t it great to see so and so in a lead performance?”
Richard (Pierce Brosnan) and Kate Jones (Emma Thompson) are a divorced couple of eight years that seem to everyone else like they still...

For his third film, writer-director Joel Hopkins (“Last Chance Harvey”) re-teamed with Emma Thompson, casting her opposite Pierce Brosnan as one half of a divorced couple who reunite after the financial future of their retirement years is thrown into uncertainty by an unscrupulous French businessman. A screwball-tinged heist flick that not so much feeds “eat the rich” feelings which might be surging in the zeitgeist at the moment as offer up a divergent, flight-of-fancy caper for the middle-aged, ”The Love Punch” plays out like a reimagining of “The Parent Trap” by way of “Ocean’s Eleven,” and minus the kids. For ShockYa, Brent Simon recently had a chance to speak one-on-one with Hopkins [ Read More ]

The Love Punch
Written and directed by Joel Hopkins
UK, 2013
The Love Punch is the latest entry in the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel subgenre of modern British cinema, in which a group of elder-statesmen performers go to an even remotely exotic locale to partake in a series of hopefully delightful hijinks. This time, it’s Pierce Brosnan, Emma Thompson, Timothy Spall, and Celia Imrie gallivanting in France, playing a quartet of characters who are ostensibly out to reclaim the money that’s rightfully theirs. Mostly, though, The Love Punch exists to give its leading actors a chance to have a good time on set; it’s less fun to watch, however, specifically because the logistics of the central caper make very little sense or inspire much tension.
Brosnan is Richard, who’s winding down his working years as the head of a successful London company. His life is superficially perfect,...

Directed and written by Joel Hopkins — whose earlier films “Jump Tomorrow” and “Last Chance Harvey” demonstrated both perfect comedic timing and a warm understanding of human imperfection — “The Love Punch” gets by in no small part thanks to the individual charms and collective chemistry between leads Pierce Brosnan and Emma Thompson. Playing divorced couple Richard and Kate, Brosnan and Thompson depict the semi-stable state of long separations: occasional conversations about new developments or old resentments, living separate lives. But when captain-of-industry Brosnan sells his company to a larger megacorp whose CEO (Laurent Lafitte) then robs the entire pension fund...

To the best of my knowledge, Emma Thompson is the only Oscar-winning actress (and screenwriter) who’s ever said that extreme vulgarity in modern comedy is “just like watching somebody getting their dick out and putting it on someone’s shoulder.” (You only get to read it, but I had the pleasure of hearing it spoken aloud, as if by Jane Austen herself.)
In The Love Punch, Thompson and Pierce Brosnan play a long-divorced couple who begin to fall back in love with each other as they try to steal a diamond from the unscrupulous billionaire who sank their financial fortunes.

The jokes are as creaky as the aching bunions and bad backs onscreen, but Emma Thompson and Pierce Brosnan are incandescent together. I’m “biast” (pro): love Thompson and Brosnan
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Emma Thompson and Pierce Brosnan plot a jewel heist. In the French Riviera. No, it does not make any sense. Yes, it requires lines of dialogue akin to “Hey, good thing you knew a guy who could create a replica of a $10 million diamond necklace on short notice.” And a mess of kittens in a place where kittens would never, ever be (seriously). And for Brosnan (A Long Way Down) and Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks) — and their pals Timothy Spall (The Rise) and Celia Imrie (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) — to disguise themselves as Texans, for Scooby-Doo or — at a stretch — Bugs Bunny values of “disguise.

While only making a small handful of films across his career, Joel Hopkins has never had any trouble drawing in the stars, as having worked alongside Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thomspon in his preceding endeavour Last Chance Harvey, he now reunites with the latter once more in The Love Punch, also throwing Pierce Brosnan into the mix for good measure.

Director: Joel Hopkins; Screenwriter: Joel Hopkins; Starring: Emma Thompson, Pierce Brosnan, Tuppence Middleton, Timothy Spall, Celia Imrie; Running time: 94 mins; Certificate: 12A
Pierce Brosnan and Emma Thompson stay young at heart as a divorced couple plotting a jewel heist in this British Channel-hopping comedy. It's only old-fashioned in the sense that writer/director Joel Hopkins (who previously cast Thompson in grownup rom-com Last Chance Harvey) pitches it like the sort of mad screwball caper that Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant might have made in the 1930s.
In essence, that means the plot is a bunch of nonsense that contrives to get our creaky-boned heroes into impossible positions, both physically and figuratively. It's a bald-faced, cheeky approach by Hopkins that may grate on some viewers' nerves; feeling that perhaps a couple of virtual OAPs shouldn't be able to scale a cliff face – at least, not without being bitten by a radioactive spider first.

International theft or marriage counseling? The new international trailer for "The Love Punch" suggests that the two might not be too far apart. The film stars Pierce Brosnan and Emma Thompson as a divorced couple who reuinite to steal a diamond in France following the loss of their pension to a corrupt businessman. Timothy Spall and Celia Imrie co-star as their friends/accomplices. Joel Hopkins of "Last Chance Harvey" fame directed, and the trailer suggests a mix between that film's twinkly amiability and a lighthearted farce caper. The film debuted at Tiff in the Gala section, and is distributed by Ketchup Entertainment. No U.S. release date has been announced.

Debuting out in Toronto last year to slightly mixed early reviews, Joel Hopkins’ romantic-comedy/heist film, The Love Punch, is soon set to arrive in cinemas on our shores.
Emma Thompson and Pierce Brosnan lead the cast as a divorced couple who scheme to recover the retirement money stolen from them, bringing in the heist part of the equation. And with its release date on our shores on the horizon, eOne have released the first trailer.
Academy Award-winner Emma Thompson plays Kate, whose biting banter with ex-husband Richard (Brosnan) suggests that the embers of their former ardour haven’t been fully extinguished. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for their retirement nest egg, which is well and truly wiped out when Richard’s investment firm is defrauded and the employee pension fund is siphoned away. Learning that the unscrupulous French financier behind the scheme has just purchased a $10 million diamond for his bride-to-be,...

Liane Balaban made an impression as Dustin Hoffman’s sweetly sad, set-to-wed daughter in “Last Chance Harvey,” and will be recognizable to plenty of folks from her recurring role on the small screen’s “Supernatural.” In her latest film, however, Balaban gets to channel a wild, daffy femininity whose unhinged, slightly damaged siren call will strike a chord of familiarity in many a guy. In the vein of “Mad Love” and “Sweet November,” “Finding Joy” finds disillusioned author Kyle (Josh Cooke) returning home and having to cope with various indignities tossed his way by his estranged father (Barry Bostwick) and new stepmother (Lainie Kazan), when he meets Balaban’s spunky bohemian title character. Toronto -- At least Dustin Hoffman is honest when asked why it took him so long to make his directing debut.
"I don't know," Hoffman said.
The 75-year-old Hoffman went behind the camera for "Quartet," starring Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay, Billy Connolly and Pauline Collins as aging British opera divas at a retirement home for musicians who put aside past differences for a reunion concert.
"Quartet," which premiered at last September's Toronto International Film Festival, opened in a handful of theaters Jan. 11 and expands to wider release Friday.
Hoffman always wanted to direct, optioning stories, working on scripts, developing projects. He even started out to direct the 1978 ex-convict drama "Straight Time," in which he also was starring. Hoffman cast the film, worked on the script with several writers and said he "even got myself secreted into San Quentin – which is another story – in a convict's outfit for about five hours before I got found out.

Last night, the 35th annual Kennedy Center Honored Dustin Hoffman among others. We are very proud of Dustin Hoffman. His new film and directorial debut,”Quartet,” is doing very well and it has been recognized by many organizations. Dustin Hoffman has long harbored a desire to direct a film, and having only ever done so on stage, he can officially call himself a Director this year with the release of his first feature film “Quartet.” Debuting at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, “Quartet” stars Dame Maggie Smith, Sir Tom Courtenay, Pauline Collins, Billy Connolly, and Sir Michael Gambon. Based on the play by Ronald Harwood, the film follows four retired opera singers as they attempt to put on a concert to save their beloved home — and celebrate Verdi’s birthday in the process. Of his experience with the first time director, Connolly explains, “Dustin’s a brilliant director because he’s such a brilliant actor,...

One of the best pleasant surprises of the initial Toronto International Film Festival announcement this morning? The surprise reveal of a new Noah Baumbach film. While Baumbach, the filmmaker behind "The Squid and the Whale," hinted to us in a recent interview that something was up his sleeve, we didn't imagine it was something we'd be seeing so soon. Titled "Frances Ha," co-written by Baumbach with his girlfriend Greta Gerwig, plus starring Gerwig herself and Mickey Sumner ("Last Chance Harvey"), we've finally received a first look at the under-the-radar picture. And first and foremost, we'll all note that the picture is shot in black and white (this time instead of cinematographer Harris Savides, Baumbach has Sam Levy, of "Wendy and Lucy" fame, shooting the picture). And clearly this is the picture Gerwig was talking about when she hinted a few months ago that she was at work on a "secret" picture.

Jared Padalecki’s Sam Winchester is getting some more love in Supernatural Season 8. Liane Balaban has been cast in the recurring role of Amelia, who by the sound of it is a victim turned (or returned to) cool chick, as Amelia’s character is described by the CW as “a tragedy-damaged soul” and “soon reveals herself to be a brave, sweet, smart, sarcastic woman.” This being tv, and since we are talking the brothers Winchester, she’s also easy on the eyes – Dean would haven’t it any other way, I don’t think.

When you start with Rabbit Hole but continue with Project X & Footloose, I think something didn’t go quite as planned. Miles Teller‘s minor (creative) bump in the career road could be atoned for soon, however, with Deadline pegging him as a co-star to Shailene Woodley‘s in The Spectacular Now, a drama set to be directed by James Ponsoldt (Smashed).
The film’s based on Tim Tharp‘s novel, and was adapted by Michael Weber & Scott Neustadter ([500] Days of Summer); in it, Teller will play Sutter, a developing alcoholic whose interactions with a younger girl, Aimee (Woodley), serve as the impetus to clean up before his life spins out of control. (We can all hope this is a process free of montages.) The story shares a little ground with Ponsoldt‘s last film — enough, as a matter of fact, that it convinced the Descendants star to keep Spectacular Now on her schedule — and,...

The hectic hussle and bussle of the Berlin International Film Festival and European Film Market starts today — and, in turn, there will be news pouring out from Germany left and right. So, even though we’re barely 24 hours into the event, new deals are already being announced. THR informs us that Pierce Brosnan and Emma Thompson have signed on for Love Punch, a romantic comedy from British writer/director Joel Hopkins.
The both of them will play a divorced couple who reluctantly join together to take on a businessman that has stolen their pension. Hopkins previously directed Thompson in 2008′s Last Chance Harvey, which earned both her and her co-star Dustin Hoffman Golden Globe nominations. Love Punch will start shooting this summer in the UK, Paris, and the French Riviera. Co-producer Snd, a French company, will be handling world sales and is currently shopping it to potential buyers at the Efm.

Jennifer Westfeldt makes little use of her cast of Bridesmaids and Mad Men, but this unusual romance is explored perceptively
It was once the neglected housewife of romcom topics, but no one could accuse today's Hollywood of ignoring what happens after "I do". Fortysomething actresses are falling over each other to look adorably dishevelled while multitasking in films like I Don't Know How She Does It and last year's Motherhood, while fiftysomething divorcees are loudly rediscovering their va-va-voom in Last Chance Harvey and It's Complicated.
The similarly middle-aged Friends With Kids will no doubt receive a boost in both box office and credibility from a marketing campaign which highlights the Bridesmaids cast reunion. But if the audiences at the Toronto premiere expected uproarious comedy, they were quickly disappointed. Not only is Friends with Kids light on toilet-set set-pieces, it also makes little use of that impressive ensemble cast.

Chicago – USA has a proven formula for success and they show no sign of slowing down in that department, adding new hits like “Covert Affairs” and “Fairly Legal” to a line-up of proven successes like “Burn Notice” and “Psych.” The first season of the very hit-and-miss “Affairs” and the second season of the more-consistent “Royal Pains” recently hit DVD from Universal and they’re both sets designed for fans of the network.
DVD Rating: 4.0/5.0
I’m still not sold on “Covert Affairs.” I’m curious to see if the show can develop into something more interesting in its soon-to-debut second season and the cast is certainly strong enough to do so, but the show is too inconsistent and doesn’t stand up to comparisons to the best of USA (“Monk,” “Burn Notice,” “Royal Pains,” “White Collar”). Piper Perabo is not always a convincing lead, but the supporting cast often picks...
