Beginning of the Adventurer

Warning: Spoilers
Warning do not read unless seen episode.

This episode is an honorable mention and is another one of my favorite pilot episodes as it was written by one of my favorite script writers Christy Marx, but also it does what it should do and best which is set up the main plot and protagonist and get them on their way.

Really like how it sets things up as it's flows gradual and naturally making it feel organic. There are a lot of good memorable moments from Conan lifting the stone to retrieve the Atlantean sword. It's basically the whole "Sword in the Stone" motif only here it's the reverse where it's a test of being not just physically but spiritually stronger than the stone. And we see Conan passes on both counts, it's such a rewarding feeling not just in finally getting the sword but knowing it was your own strong will that made it possible.

Another moment is when Wrath Amon then turns Conan's family to stone to make an example of them but also to get a sick laugh which he does, that moment you just want Conan to wipe that sick smile off his face. Conan just draws out that sword and we just see the Star Metal energy shoot out, you can say it was a "I have the Power!" moment which we know Conan does. In a way you can say Wrath Amon has both set him of on Conan's journey but also has somewhat made Conan as he's now his oncoming threat.

We of course see other establishing factors from one decent scuffle with a few snake men as well as a rock troll, both you can say are like the video game tutorial run. Meet up with Ebametrious the Sage who of course is part of Conan lore which leads to the shield and more explanation to the plotline which also helps bring more weight to it, showing how serious this war with this force of evil really is. But also, we see Conan unfortunately get into his first fix as someone slipped a Mickey into his dinner and he is now a slave in one of Wrath Amon's slave ships.

Will Conan find a way out of this fix before his quest ends abruptly, you'll just have to wait till part two.

Rating: 3 and a half stars.

Conan for kids
pbloome781 February 2023
A lot of people over the years give this show a lot of flack and they don't see it for what it is a kid's primer to the world of Conan.

Conan in general is traditionally a very grown up character and it's hard to adapt to a kids world but it does. It falters and flawed like any show from the 90's. Like any adaptation of that time it uses the source material as a tether and takes a little creative liberties. In this instead of a barbarian he is an adventurer, he uses a sword, still takes out the bad guys but by sending them to another dimension instead of that other way. He learns from his grandfather about his travels and this instills a wanderlust Conan is still famous for. He is still stubborn and hard headed. He enjoys a good time and a sucker for a pretty face. He still doesn't trust society. He is still fighting lizard people, vile wizards and horrendous monsters just with his fists instead of a battle axe. He travels with odd assortment of friends but learning life lessons instead of getting into serious trouble. The elements are there just toned down alot so you could watch this with your little ones.

I first watched this show when I was 11 or 12 and I had seen Conan the movies many times when they played on tv. I knew there were comics but wasn't really collecting them at the time I usually got what I could at Jewel or Dominick's when they had comics with the magazines and a few books that were paperback sized. I had more interest in Spider-Man and the X-men than Conan at the time. I would watch this show after school and yeah it was alittle kiddy for me but it was fun I really liked this stuff and you didn't see much of it after this with Hercules amd Xena. Years later I was in the final days of college my favorite Avengers writer was going to start a new Conan series at Dark Horse Comics and I thought I would give it a try. Nearly twenty years later I have about 60% of all the Conan comics that have been printed through various companies. A lot of that has to do with how fondly I thought of this show. Is it the greatest cartoon of all time no but what is? It is fun and has a conclusion which is rare for cartoons of the day. If you are a fan looking for a true adaptation of Howard's work sadly you won't find it here but you'll find it's heart. I think alot of people watch this and forget that the hero in Howard's world was never fit for children you can't try to fit it in that lens you'll never be happy. What you can do is kick back turn on tubi watch this with your kids, siblings or nieces/ nephews and introduce them to this world. Then in a few years when they are older they can dust off an old adventure or comic jump back in as they never left.

Conan the He-Man
zeppo-229 May 2007
Nothing like the original books, or the comics or the film, apart from the name, there is little to associate this with the Conan character. But if you try to judge it on it's own merits,it's not a bad little cartoon series, certainly better than a lot of the pap that is out there.

Also, working in the confines of the TV cartoon industry is not the easiest of tasks,no violence,no swearing,no womanising, which cuts a lot out of the original Conan myth! Here in the origin story, meteorites fall and Conan's dad makes him a sword from them, hence a magic sword which draws in the He-Man connection. Evil Wrath-Amon wants the meteorites to bring the serpent man back into this world that they used to rule,a plot taken from the Kull books from Conan author,Robert E.Howard. This sets up the running quest as Conan goes up against Wrath-Amon who wants the sword and has turned Conan's family to stone.

To enable some battles with the sword,it's touch sends the serpent men (disguised as men) back to their outer-worldly dimension. Nice little touch which gets the sword into use without any bloodletting. As mentioned,it's difficult to work round all the regulations laid down for kid's cartoons.

So,taken on it's own standards, this isn't a bad little series and judged on those,it's works pretty well and I quite enjoyed it.

Just, repeat, don't expect the real Conan in this and you might be pleasantly surprised.
