Horror movies use different tropes to scare the audience, with the most obvious of them being jumpscares that are waiting for a viewer around the corner together with a loud nasty sound. However, some genre’s staples manage to creep you out and haunt your mind without using this technique.
Here are 7 inventive, yet extremely frightening horrors, handpicked by Redditors.
1. Sinister (2012)
First comes Ethan Hawke’s supernatural flick, following a disgraced true-crime writer, who finds films depicting relentless murders in his new house.
It’s notorious for having “one of the scariest soundtracks ever” made for a movie , as voiced by @BD_Sanchez.
2. Rec (2007)
This Spanish movie is truly a gem of the subgenre of found footage horrors. It centers on a reporter following the exploration of an infection spreading inside a dark apartment building and the aftermath of a quarantine introduced for its inhabitants.

Anyone who knows me would say my taste runs ever so slightly counter to the popular opinion but up top I wanted to shout out some big titles that I appreciate but didn’t quite make my favorites list. Oftentimes it feels like the days of true-blue horror icons are behind us, but Gerard Johnstone and Akela Cooper’s M3GAN was a veritable hoot that gave us an instantly iconic tiny terror in tights who more than lived up to the memes and showed everyone that hasn’t quite come around yet on HBO’s Girls just how #mother Allison Williams is. Also, that Skatt Brothers “Walk the Night” needle drop took up residence in my head last January and has not left. Talk to Me was one of the more intense in-theater experiences I had this year, and though it lost something the more I sat with it, what...

“You need spiritual realignment— you’re too far from Christ,” has become an increasingly rare statement to hear in contemporary horror films, yet in this year’s Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism— in which a woman with diagnosed schizophrenia is subjected to a violent exorcism of her internal “demons” that goes awry— once again, we’re being confronted with just how scary it must be to completely lose autonomy over one’s own body and belief system. Exorcism movies enjoyed a long streak of popularity in the mid-2000s and early 2010s, as movies like The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Last Exorcism, and anything else with the “E” word in the title seemed to attract both the casual and devout horror crowds and dominated box offices. But for the last handful of years, mainstream horror has largely evaded these types of movies, save for The Conjuring franchise and things less...

Horror films generally do little to add layers to their characters. But I think I’ve seen an anomaly of the highest caliber in Demian Rugna’s When Evil Lurks, where the characters are deeply immersed in the world and they need not explain too much to gain our trust that something truly wicked is going on in the film. The film has some of the most fascinating characters, and they are made all the more potent by their placement in the context of a neo-noir western. When Evil Lurks knows exactly when to turn the proceedings up a notch, and even though it becomes too obscure during some moments, especially when dealing with the origins of evil, it keeps us engaged in the plot. It wouldn’t have been possible without complex characters that had enough gas to keep the events interesting. Most of the film rides on Pedro’s shoulders,...

When brothers in a rural Argentinian town discover a possessed man, they decide to move him away with the help of some townspeople in the hopes of saving the town from being “infected”. What follows is the consequence of their arrogance, which may lead to the birth of true evil. When Evil Lurks is a Spanish-language Argentinian film directed by Demian Rugna (Terrified), starring Ezequiel Rodríguez and Demián Salomón in lead roles. I’d say that as a horror enthusiast, I’ve seen quite a few questionable films in my time, but this one has to take the cake for the most anxiety-inducing one. I could say this film is deliciously evil, at least for those who like to dabble in the world of horror, but it would be a disservice to how grotesque the whole thing is. When Evil Lurks is unlike anything I’ve seen before. It’s...

Plot: In a remote village, two brothers find a demon-infected man just about to give birth to evil itself. They decide to get rid of the man but merely succeed in spreading the chaos.
Review: Every year, there are certain movies that come along with the ability to evoke extreme emotions. When Evil Lurks is a movie that made me feel low in a way I wasn’t expecting. Every character has a darkness to them, and there’s no one to root for. So long as you really prepare yourself for a dire hellhole, there’s much to appreciate. There’s an edge to it that few films have these days. I was genuinely shocked at several moments, which rarely ever happens. There’s also a lot of frustration, as this is very much a Movie, and the characters don’t act with much logic. But it’s hard...

After almost four years into a new decade, horror remains one of the most resilient and fascinating genres of this century. In fact, it’s fair to say that the cinema of chills has only grown in esteem. About 10 years ago, some critics were dubiously suggesting that horror movies were undergoing an “elevation.” Nowadays, though, scary movies’ popularity and respect just seems nearly ubiquitous.
In a time when everything is dubiously being stripped down and sold as “content,” horror remains one of the last refuges for filmmakers to make art—or at least a wild good time with a dancing robo-doll! With that in mind, we’ve put our heads together at Den of Geek to provide you with a list of the best horror movies of 2023 so far, for your viewing terror. Enjoy.

To describe When Evil Lurks as a horror film about demonic possession is to conjure images of projectile vomiting, spinning heads, tortured priests spraying profanity-spewing children with holy water, and, well, the Conjuring franchise. But Argentine writer-director Demián Rugna’s harrowing film isn’t interested in those things.
The distinction becomes quickly apparent when our protagonists, adult brothers Pedro (Ezequiel Rodríguez) and Jaime (Demián Salomon), encounter the possessed Uriel, the eldest son of an impoverished old woman (Isabel Quinteros) living on remote farmland. Uriel has become a “rotten,” a human incubator for a demon. His body has swollen to an immense size, covered in tumorous, oozing growths and incapable of being moved by a single person.
Here, possession functions like a disease that infests its surroundings. There are procedures to follow and even bureaucratic processes that are meant to respond to the disease’s spread, but there’s only a...

Terrified director Demian Rugna‘s new horror film When Evil Lurks just received a theatrical release from IFC Films on October 6th, and will heading over to the Shudder streaming service on October 27th. One person who highly recommends that you check it out either on the big screen or at home is Sinister and Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson, who just named When Evil Lurks as one of his top two favorite movies of the year during an interview on the The Discourse podcast.
Derrickson said (as reported by The Playlist), “I think Barbie is the best film I’ve seen this year—well, maybe that’s not true; I saw this horror film, When Evil Lurks at Fantastic Fest, but Barbie and When Evil Lurks those are my two favorite films of the year, which couldn’t be further away from each other.” Derrickson went on to talk...

The film, developed and co-produced by Chernin Entertainment (The Greatest Showman) based on a stage show by comedians Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson, caught a wave with a solid per screen average of $31,552 including sold out Q&As in NY and LA. Writer/Director Demián Rugna broke onto the horror scene with 2017’s aptly titled Terrified (Aterrados), a paranormal tour de force of shocking imagery and genuine scares. Rugna shifts from ghosts to demonic possession for his latest, When Evil Lurks, breaking all the rules along the way.
Shudder and IFC Films will be presenting When Evil Lurks in theaters on October 6, followed by the film’s Shudder premiere on October 27.
In the film, “a pair of brothers find a mutilated corpse near their property and convene with the locals to suss it out. An escape attempt ensues as the film keeps its protagonists on edge, racing against imminent danger to shake the spirit’s relentless clutches.

When Evil Lurks (Cuando Acecha la Maldad) is the new feature film from Argentinian director Demián Rugna. Rugna assured himself a place in horror history with his film Terrified in 2017 and then vanished off the scene until his segment in last year’s Satanic Hispanics. Thankfully he didn’t make us wait another five years for something new, and When Evil Lurks premiered this year at TIFF as part of its Midnight Madness program.
Appropriately enough the film starts somewhere around midnight when Pedro and his brother Jimmy are awakened by the sound of gunshots somewhere in the woods. Going to investigate the next morning they find a body, or half of one anyway, with a strange device nearby and a notebook in a language the brothers don’t recognize nearby.

When Evil Lurks, written and directed by Demián Rugna, is a no-holds-barred demon-slaying nightmare of blood and guts and unstoppable evil. Set in a world where demonic possession has become as commonplace as a zombie outbreak in post-apocalyptic Texas, the story follows a series of family under attack by a diabolic force of death and destruction.
Brothers Pedro (Ezequiel Rodríguez) and Jimmy’s (Demián Salomón) world is flip-turned upside-down when they discover a possessed man in a farmhouse next door to their property. This poor unfortunate soul has been in the grips of a demon for so long that his body has begun to rot and swell in a delectably disgusting fashion. It’s a real “My 666 Lb Life” scenario and just looking at his rotting bloat is enough to make you throw up in your mouth a little bit. As this man’s body dies, the demon’s powers grow stronger,...
