Parents will use whatever tools are at their disposal to help their children, so despite what Gaby Hoffman shouts at Benedict Cumberbatch in the first trailer for “Eric,” it makes perfect sense that a New York puppeteer would a big blue puppet to help find his missing son. Right? Right.
From creator and writer Abi Morgan comes the latest Netflix limited series, “Eric,” an original series set in 1980s New York and following Cumberbatch’s panicked father as he embarks on a unique odyssey to save his lost child. Edgar (Ivan Howe) is 9 years old when he heads off to school and isn’t seen again. His parents, Vincent (Cumberbatch) and Cassie (Hoffman), call the cops, make a plea on television, and do everything in their power to help locate their son, but the investigation keeps hitting dead ends. Frustrated and desperate, Vincent’s guilt curdles into something dangerous — or...

Jane Campion, director of “The Power of the Dog,” is the recipient of this year’s Pardo d’Onore Manor at the Locarno Film Festival — its award for outstanding achievement in cinema. So yes, the “Dog” director is getting a cat trophy: Pardo d’Onore translates to “Leopard of Honor” in English.
The award will be bestowed on August 16, 2024 at the 77th edition of the festival. Locarno will also feature screenings of two Campion movies as selected by the director herself: 1990’s “An Angel at My Table” and 1993’s “The Piano.” It will be a brand new 4K restoration of “The Piano” that audience in Switzerland sees.
It’s quite an honor, but certainly not Campion’s first big award. She was the first woman to win the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival (for “The Piano”). Campion is also the first woman to be nominated twice for...

“Civil War,” the new acclaimed drama from director Alex Garland, is dominating theaters everywhere, and the film’s star Kirsten Dunst gives one of her best performances in her long and varied career. In honor of her latest movie, let’s revisit her many awards races, including her first Oscar nomination for “The Power of the Dog.”
Dunst’s first role that brought the actress lots of awards attention arrived in 1994 in Neil Jordan’s “Interview with the Vampire,” starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. Dunst’s performance as the young outspoken vampire Claudia earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress, up against Sophia Loren in “Prét-à-Porter,” Robin Wright Penn in “Forrest Gump,” Uma Thurman in “Pulp Fiction” and Dianne Wiest, who won the trophy for “Bullets over Broadway.”

Alex Garland returns in a film that’s reminiscent of his earlier works that kicked off his career. The plot of Civil War has been kept under wraps for the most part, with the synopsis of the upcoming film being, “An adrenaline-fueled thrill ride through a near-future fractured America balanced on the razor edge.” However, there’s enough mystery and intrigue about Garland’s latest that can make this political thriller a sleeper hit in 2024. The cast is mixed with unknowns and well-established veterans: Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, Nick

[Editor’s note: this list was originally published in September 2019. It has been updated with new entries to coincide with the release of “Civil War.”]
Kirsten Dunst has many talents as an actor, but one of her best virtues is quite possibly just how cool she is. From her days as a teen star in “Bring It On” and “The Virgin Suicides” to her current era as an adult who takes on adventurous, ambitious roles in movies like “The Power of the Dog” and “Civil War,” Dunst has always had a charm and ease to her that has made her feel both relatable and glamorous. Part of it is her wry, catlike smile which gives her movie star looks some individuality. Part of it is her interviews, in which she projects a down-to-earth nature that feels authentic rather than put-on. And most of it comes from her choice of projects, which shows a great sense of taste and a desire to do truly great, ambitious, and weird work.

Aardman Academy Pacts With New Zealand’s Canterbury University for Stop-Motion Animation (Exclusive)
New Zealand’s University of Canterbury has signed a five-year exclusive agreement with the Aardman Academy, the training arm of the Aardman Animations, the British film and TV studio behind “Wallace and Gromit” and “Shaun the Sheep.”
The agreement enables the Christchurch-based university to become the only educational institution in New Zealand to specialize in Aardman’s unique version of stop-motion animation. It has the potential to upend the country’s animation industry.
The Aardman Academy was created at a time when the studio urgently needed more animators to produce “Chicken Run.” Released in 2000, the film went on to become the highest-grossing stop-motion film of all time. The Aardman Academy has since trained hundreds of world-class animators, directors, model makers and other specialists.
Training will be offered to animation students studying for the university’s Bachelor of Digital Screen with Honours degree. And it creates the opportunity to receive training...

The love story of Hollywood star Kirsten Dunst and her husband Jesse Plemons feels like a script straight out of a romantic comedy. After a five-year engagement and welcoming two sons, they finally exchanged vows in 2022. Recently, Dunst opened up about the enchanting experience of falling in love with the Peter Parker of her life.

Actress Kirsten Dunst headlines Alex Garland’s political thriller Civil War. The film sees Dunst play the role of a photojournalist during a second Civil War in America which prompts Texas and California to secede from the USA and try to overthrow the government. The film also stars Nick Offerman, Wagner Moura, and Stephen McKinley Henderson.
Apart from the main cast, the film also features Jesse Plemons as a white nationalist militiaman. Plemons reportedly appears in one scene in the film, which was reportedly extremely uncomfortable for the cast and crew. It was reportedly more so for Dunst as she is married to Plemons.

We’re all still far off from knowing for sure what the most likely 2025 Oscar contenders are. But the ripple effect of the WGA and SAG strikes is a spring film season of buzzy, auteur-driven dramas. This is still true of “Dune: Part Two,” the film that has set the tone of this year’s awards conversation, though with six Oscars already under the Warner Bros. franchise’s belt, its chances at more Academy Awards nominations are all too predictable.
An Oscars wild card is “Civil War,” the latest A24 film from writer-director Alex Garland. While his most recent film with the company, “Men,” underperformed critically and commercially, his first collaboration with A24, “Ex Machina,” netted Garland his sole Oscar nomination, for Best Original Screenplay, and won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

Writer/director Alex Garland explored the near future in two of his previous three features. In Ex MacHina he pondered the possibilities of emerging technology and the rise of sentient artificial beings. Then in Annihilation, he tackled the results of alien contact and the impact on the ecology and the military response to it. With this new film, Garland goes “back to the future”, though it’s not centuries ahead, but rather a time that could be “just around the corner”, spawned from events happening right now. And it’s not gizmos or ETs that propel the cautionary fable. No, it’s the dangers of hatred and intolerance that divide the country and lead to a Civil War. It’s not the first time, but it could be the last…

Alex Garland belongs to a certain class of filmmakers that fascinates me because, regardless of the more positive or negative opinions about his films, all his narratives have an undeniable impact and are practically impossible not to debate. Personally, I believe that the worst type of movie is one that doesn’t provoke any kind of discussion… those that quickly fade into oblivion. A trait that doesn’t fit into the career of the mind behind Ex Machina, Annihilation, Men, and now, Civil War.
The title of this film couldn’t be more explicit and direct to its premise, set in a future dystopian America in full crisis. A24 is a studio that has built up a good name over the last decade and change in Hollywood. It's a name that means something to moviegoers, and that's no small thing. But as the studio looks to compete in an increasingly volatile Hollywood landscape, minor theatrical successes like "Priscilla" and disastrous flops such as "Under the Silver Lake" aren't going to cut it anymore. So, the studio is going bigger and making its biggest bet ever with Alex Garland's "Civil War." The question is, can this politically-charged, unconventional war film break through like a more conventional blockbuster?
Given that Garland's latest carries a $50 million budget, A24 is certainly hoping so. The good news is that the initial numbers suggest that this one will be a winner, at least in the early going. "Civil War" is eyeing an opening between $18 and $24 million when it arrives next weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Cailee Spaeny recalls staring at the back of Taylor Swift’s head at the Golden Globes 2024, starstruck that the singer-songwriter was right in front of her.
During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to promote her upcoming film, Civil War, the Priscilla star explained she was on cloud nine at the awards show, where she was nominated for her role in the Sofia Coppola-directed biopic.
“I heard that I was sitting at the Poor Things table, and I was like, ‘Oh my God, that’s a winners table.’ It’s a very big deal, so I sort of wandered in, and I was trying to find my name tag, and I saw Emma Stone,” she told the late night host. “I’m like all right, Ok. So, someone had moved my name tag, but it was totally fine. Then, Taylor Swift ended up sitting at that table, so the jury’s still out.

With such a long and illustrious history of working in the film industry, Kirsten Dunst has witnessed a tremendous amount of success in Hollywood, most popularly solidifying her legacy by playing the role of Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man trilogy.
But in recent history, it seems like the actress has only been working with filmmakers of the industry who are masters of their craft in the art of filmmaking and no one else.

Before I watched “Civil War,” two publicists working on the dystopian thriller assured me that it isn’t a political film.
In the movie, Kirsten Dunst plays a dogged photojournalist muscling her way through a smoldering Washington D.C., trying to document the bitter conflict between two heavily armed factions tearing America apart. I didn’t buy that it didn’t have something to say about this moment. And neither does Dunst.
“So, do you believe that it’s not political? I mean … it’s an anti war film,” Dunst tells me with a shrug. “This movie, after you see it, you want to talk about it for a while with people. And I think any movie that does that is incredible.”

Kirsten Dunst was too honest when she admitted that money was part of the reason why she appeared in Spider-Man in 2002. While she claimed money was the reason actors mostly took up superhero projects, she also believed Sam Raimi’s movie was very different from modern superhero films. She felt that Raimi’s movies were indie films disguised as superhero films, which is what she would want if another Spider-Man movie were made.

In Hollywood, actors often find themselves trapped in a loop of similar characters. But Kirsten Dunst isn’t one to be confined by expectations. She’s not afraid to break away from what people expect of her, and that’s what makes her stand out in the film industry.

Kirsten Dunst‘s career skyrocketed after her haunting performance as a child vampire in Interview with the Vampire (1994). However, her critically acclaimed role in Lars von Trier’s Melancholia (2011) seemed to pigeonhole her into playing melancholic characters.

Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog) and Olivia Colman (The Favourite) have been tapped to star in The Roses, a reimagining of the 1989 classic The War of the Roses that Jay Roach (Bombshell) will direct for Searchlight Pictures.
Currently in development, the dark comedy’s logline is as follows: Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Theo (Cumberbatch) and Ivy (Colman): successful careers, great kids, an enviable sex life. But underneath the façade of the perfect family is a tinderbox of competition and resentments that’s ignited when Theo’s professional dreams come crashing down.
Directed by Danny DeVito and starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, the original film adaptation of The War of the Roses was released by 20th Century Fox in 1989, garnering a BAFTA and three Golden Globe nominations, including for Best Motion Picture, among other accolades.

The Western is a genre that's mostly gone by the wayside in recent decades, as portraits of straight-shooting American heroes and uncomplicated "bad guys" have become less digestible to the public. While popular neo-Westerns (like "Justified" or the works of Taylor Sheridan) and perspective-changing genre breakdowns have made a splash in recent yers, the genre has mostly died out. Of the relics that remain, few are as prolific and familiar as "Bonanza," a Western series that ran for an impressive 14 seasons on NBC in the '60s and '70s.
As a long-running TV series, "Bonanza" was able to chart the change — or stubborn lack thereof — within the genre and the country, frankly addressing topics like racism and bigotry while also delivering regular laughs and a dash of melodrama to loyal viewers. The series starred Lorne Green as widower Ben Cartwright and Dan Blocker, Pernell Roberts, and Michael Landon as Ben's three sons.

Cannes is getting into the remake business.
The Cannes film market, the Marché du Film, is launching a one-day event focused entirely on remakes and local-language adaptations of existing titles.
Together with the Cnc, the French national film board, and with support from Spain’s Institute of Cinematography & Audiovisual Arts (Icaa), Italy’s Directorate General for Cinema and Audiovisual-Italian Ministry of Culture (Dgca-MiC) and Rome-based studio Cinecittà, the Cannes market will host Cannes Remakes, a one-day event on May 20 highlighting handpicked European IP ready for new film adaptations.
The inaugural program will include a pitching session presenting a curated selection of IP titles from France, Spain and Italy judged to have the most potential for film adaptation. This pitching will be followed by a series of pre-arranged one-on-one meetings between IP holders and producers capped by an invite-only networking cocktail on the Cnc Beach.

A new series of films based on The Neverending Story is in the works, which will seek to tackle the fantasy tale in “a fresh way”.
Forty years after Wolfgang Petersen’s 1984 fantasy film The Neverending Story traumatised a generation of young movie-goers with its image of a depressed, sinking horse, a new adaptation of the original book has been announced.
See-Saw Films, the production company behind Jane Campion’s Oscar-winning The Power Of The Dog, is partnering with the estate of late German author Michael Ende to make a potential series of films based on the successful book, first published in 1979.
Both the novel and the film told the tale of a shy young boy, Bastian, who retreats into the fantasy world of the titular Neverending Story book.
“The story is both timely and timeless, and really has an opportunity to be told in a fresh way,” producer Iain Canning told Variety.

Michael Ende’s novel, published in German in 1979 and in English in 1983, follows the story of a young boy, Bastian Balthazar Bux, who falls into the world of the titular fantasy book The Neverending Story, entering the magical land of Fantastica. Alex Garland's new film "Civil War" recently premiered at SXSW in Austin, Texas and to say it's going to be one of the most talked-about movies of the year might be an understatement. It's a movie with an awful lot to say, presenting ideas in very unique ways, particularly for a war film. /Film's own Jacob Hall said in his review that the film "is less about the politics of right now, and more about the horror that accompanies a world beyond politics." To that end, Garland went to great lengths to not glorify the horrors of war, and that extended to the film's soundtrack.
Garland and the cast participated in a Q&a following the film's premiere at the festival, which I attended. "Contemporary music didn't work," the filmmaker said addressing the use of a needle drop from legendary hip-hop group De La Soul in the film. "It suddenly,...

Streamers narrowly avoided getting shut out at the 2024 Oscars: Netflix came away with just one trophy and Apple left empty-handed, after they garnered a total of 32 nominations.
Netflix collected its one win for Wes Anderson’s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” an adaptation of a Roald Dahl story, in the live action short film category. The 40-minute film, with a cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, and Ralph Fiennes, is the first Oscar for Anderson (who wasn’t in attendance to receive the award).

Heading into Sunday’s 96th Academy Awards, Netflix led all studios and platforms with 19 nominations across 11 films, including seven for Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” — which was shut out. On Jan. 12, screenwriter Simon Stephenson sent an email to the Writers Guild of America’s senior director of credits Lesley Mackey asking to set up a call to discuss an important matter. The CAA-repped writer, whose credits include Pixar’s “Luca” and StudioCanal’s “Paddington 2,” wrote, “I’ve encountered a credits-related issue on quite a high profile WGA-covered project.” According to the email exchange reviewed by Variety, a call between the two took place, and, in a follow-up missive, Stephenson wrote, “the evidence the holdovers screenplay has been plagiarised line-by-line from frisco is genuinely overwhelming – anybody who looks at even the briefest sample pretty much invariably uses the word ‘brazen.’”
Stephenson was referring to his own screenplay “Frisco,” a drama centered on a world-weary middle-aged children’s doctor and the 15-year-old patient he gets stuck looking after, and David Hemingson’s “The Holdovers” — a drama revolving around a...

Since we’re talking about the short films, I’ll accordingly keep this brief. Here are five reasons why “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” will win the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film.
1. It’s the clear standout in the category.
All five nominees are exceptional — the others being “The After,” “Red, White and Blue,” “Invincible” and “Knight of Fortune.” In a less competitive year, any one of them could easily walk away with the prize. But it’s simply too hard for anything to top “Henry Sugar.” Based on the short story of the same name by celebrated children’s author Roald Dahl, the film is seamlessly adapted to the screen with the same charm, wit and magic of the original tale. “Henry Sugar” features superb acting, exquisite costume and production design, beautiful cinematography and sharp editing. It holds an outstanding 95% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes,...

So much political gamesmanship goes into an Oscar campaign that the notion of a “best” picture at all has been nearly emptied of meaning. Though, with nearly 10,000 voting members, the Academy is the one sampling reflective of the industry to get closest to what its artists and talent believe the best to be. That is, after plenty of other worthy contenders are eliminated in the nominations process.
Seven of this year’s 10 Best Picture nominees showed up in IndieWire’s ranking of the best films of 2023, which suggests that critics and audiences are more aligned than ever in terms of the year’s finest films. Many of which, here, were championed by critics, from “Past Lives” all the way back to Sundance 2023 to “Anatomy of a Fall,” beloved since winning the Palme d’Or (Neon’s fourth consecutively) at Cannes 2023. The 2024 Oscar nominees for Best Director are Jonathan Glazer (“The Zone of Interest”), Yorgos Lanthimos (“Poor Things”), Christopher Nolan (“Oppenheimer”), Martin Scorsese (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), and Justine Triet (“Anatomy of a Fall”). Our odds currently show that Nolan (3/1) is most likely to win, followed in order by Lanthimos (4/1), Glazer (9/2), Triet (9/2), and Scorsese (9/2).
Three of these five filmmakers have been nominated at least once before, with Scorsese standing out as the only previous victor in the group. Now on his 10th bid (only two behind category record holder William Wyler), he initially triumphed on his sixth for “The Departed” (2007), which is also the only Best Picture winner in his filmography. He earned his remaining notices for “Raging Bull” (1981), “The Last Temptation of Christ” (1989), “Goodfellas” (1991), “Gangs of New York” (2003), “The Aviator” (2005), “Hugo” (2012), “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2014), and “The Irishman” (2020).

Kirsten Dunst is looking back at her time on the Spider-Man set, wishing she would’ve stood up for herself.
The actress that starred as Mary Jane Watson in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy starting in 2002, had a nickname on the set that she was not fond of. Dunst was referred to as “girly-girl,” and that’s how she was referred to throughout the filming of the trilogy.
“It was a joke, but on Spider-Man, they would call me ‘girly-girl’ sometimes on the walkie-talkie,” Dunst said in an interview with Marie Claire. “But I never said anything … Like, don’t call me that.”
Before the #MeToo movement in 2017, one of the unspoken rules in Hollywood was that young women kept quiet, with Dunst saying, “You didn’t say anything. You just took it.”

Kirsten Dunst is opening up about ageism in Hollywood and why she hasn’t been working as much lately.
In a cover story for Marie Claire as part of its 2024 Makers Issue, the Oscar-nominated actress explained that following her role in 2021’s The Power of the Dog, she was only being offered one kind of role: “the sad mom.”
So, instead of taking on any project, Dunst stepped back from acting for two years after the Jane Campion film because she wasn’t being offered the meaty roles she wanted, which she could get lost in and felt were worth her time.
“To be honest, that’s been hard for me … because I need to feed myself,” she told the publication of not working for two years. “The hardest thing is being a mom and … not feeling like, I have nothing for myself. That’s every mother — not just me.

Kirsten Dunst said in a new interview with Marie Claire that she’s finally at a stage in her career where she no longer feels “nervous” speaking her mind, adding: “I feel at home sharing everything on set now.” It’s a big change from Dunst’s experience on the “Spider-Man” set decades ago. As a young actor, Dunst didn’t have the confidence to speak up when things bothered her. Case in point: Being repeatedly called a “girly-girl” on the Marvel set.
“It was a joke, but on ‘Spider-Man,’ they would call me ‘girly-girl’ sometimes on the walkie-talkie. ‘We need girly-girl.’ But I never said anything,” Dunst said. “Like, don’t call me that!”

Kirsten Dunst Struggled with ‘Ptsd’ After ‘Civil War’ Production: The Violence ‘Shook Me to My Core’
After “The Power of the Dog,” Kirsten Dunst feels typecast; fortunately, she is no “sad mom” in Alex Garland’s A24 film “Civil War.”
Dunst plays a photojournalist documenting a post-apocalyptic American secession in the upcoming movie. How real is its combat scenes? Well, Dunst said in a Marie Claire cover story that she “had Ptsd for a good two weeks after” production wrapped.
“I remember coming home and eating lunch and I felt really empty,” Dunst said, adding that the combat scenes “shook me to my core.”
“I remember hearing them practice an explosion,” she continued. “We were in the hair and makeup trailer, which was very far away from set, and the whole trailer shook. There’s so much gunfire, and then you look at the news and it’s a school shooting again.”

The Cinema Audio Society Awards gave a boost to the Oscar hopes of “Oppenheimer” on Saturday. The film took top honors at these precursor prizes that honor sound mixing over one of its Oscar rivals for Best Sound — “Maestro”– as well as “Barbie,” “Ferrari,” “and “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
The upcoming Oscars mark the fourth year for the Best Sound category, which combines Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing. The Cas honors the latter while the Motion Picture Sound Editors salute achievements in the former.
Last year all five of the society’s favorites — “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Batman,” “Elvis” and “Top Gun: Maverick” — sounded good to the academy’s sound branch. “Top Gun: Maverick” won both awards.
In 2022, four of the five Cas nominees — “Dune,” “No Time to Die,” “The Power of the Dog” and “West Side Story” — went on to contend at the Oscars.

Exclusive: Adam Beach (The Power of the Dog) has signed on to star in an untitled new film, based on the true story of decorated Native American fire captain Paul Fullerton, which will be directed and produced by Garry A. Brown (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.).
Shooting in Dallas, Texas, the film watches as Fullerton’s life and family are turned dangerously upside down when a career-ending accident draws him into the uncharted world of marijuana, and a local district attorney and his small group of rogue police take the law into their own hands. It was in 2016 that Fullerton and his wife Maricel’s home was raided by a multi-agency task force. The couple was targeted and unjustly accused of selling and distributing marijuana, the effects of which are still being felt in an ongoing court process today.
Brown developed and wrote the project with Natalie Dickinson.
