As random and arbitrary as Netflix's Top 10 can appear, it starts to become more predictable upon closer inspection. Like the media rental stores of ancient times (which were essentially the streaming services of their epoch), new Netflix originals inevitably rank high before dwindling off in the same way that Blockbusters would initially stock their shelves with roughly 10,000 copies of the latest tentpole. Along those same lines, viewers frequently play catchup right before a show returns by marathoning its previous season(s), which is how a cult Syfy comedy series like "Resident Alien" ends up charting seemingly out of the blue.
Then there are the under-the-radar titles that find their way onto Netflix only to be discovered anew by its users, much like a customer perusing the aisles of their local video rental shop and stumbling upon some previously ignored movie featuring one of their favorite actors. So it is...

With the 2024 Oscars in the rearview mirror, it’s time to start looking toward 2025. It’s early, but not too early to start making predictions about what movies might contend for the Oscars next year.
The 97th Academy Awards may wind up dominated by an unusual number of blockbuster sequels to films that won big previously. There are also some period pieces, some comeback vehicles, and some movies that were featured on last year’s list that got held back for this year.
Here are 20 films to know for the 2025 Oscars. Some of them are locks, some of them are long shots, and all of them are worth keeping an eye on throughout 2024 as their Academy Awards chances rise and fall.
“A Real Pain”
One of three films on this list that have screened publicly as of publication time, road dramedy “A Real Pain” was the buzziest title out of Sundance this year.

Apple TV+ has added more than 50 licensed movies included in the price of the subscription service — the streamer’s biggest collection of back-catalog studio content to date. But the third-party titles will only be available for a limited time.
Apple TV+’s lineup has mostly comprised original series, movies and specials commissioned for the platform (as well as a smattering of live MLB games). Now it has added a bouquet of older film favorites to the mix, including popular and award-winning movies like “Titanic,” “300,” “Argo,” “Black Hawk Down,” “The Bodyguard,” “Jurassic World,” “Gravity,” “Fast & Furious 6,” “Kill Bill” Volume 1 and 2, “Star Trek Into Darkness,” “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” the original 2004 “Mean Girls” and “Zoolander.”
The movies are listed in a new section on the service labeled “Great Movies on Apple TV+” — however, the service notes, these are available for a “limited time.

The move could signal a shift in strategy by Apple to finally incorporate more library titles into its catalog.
Is Apple TV+ finally getting non-original titles in its streaming library? Yes, at least temporarily, at any rate, as the streamer has added a total of 51 movies to its streaming catalog, spanning every genre and including some true blockbusters. Apple stresses that these titles will only be available for a limited time, but it could be providing a glimpse into its own future with the additions. Having long focused on high-quality originals without the studio archives or licensing library of its competitors, Apple V+ has been a somewhat different type of streamer since it launched in November 2019.

For the past six years in a row, the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor has gone to men with more than 35 minutes of screen time in their respective films. Although four of last year’s nominees could have bucked that trend, the academy chose to keep things consistent by honoring Ke Huy Quan’s especially lengthy performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” By appearing in a whopping 58 minutes and 33 seconds (or 42.03%) of the Best Picture winner, he more than comfortably surpassed his category’s screen time average and came within nine minutes of outpacing every previous supporting male victor.
Quan’s performance is the second longest in his film, as he and his Best Actress-winning on-screen wife, Michelle Yeoh, are separated by 36 minutes and 43 seconds (or 26.35%). Directly below him is Stephanie Hsu – who earned a supporting bid as his character’s daughter – at 42:18 (30.36%). Considering all 87 featured male turns that have merited Academy Awards,...

Kumail Nanjiani has opened up about the mental toll of promoting Chloé Zhao’s Marvel movie, Eternals, amidst negative reviews, revealing that it resulted in him seeking counseling.
“The reviews were really bad,” Nanjiani remembered, during an appearance on Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum. “I was too aware of it. I was reading every review [and] checking too much.”
Unfortunately, Marvel expected the movie would be well-reviewed and lifted the embargo early, so Nanjiani and his castmates were sent on “a big global tour” to coincide with anticipated positive press. This meant the actors were thrown right in the thick of promoting the first MCU film to be certified rotten on Rotten Tomatoes.
By Nanjiani’s estimation, there was “some weird soup in the atmosphere” for why Eternals got panned, and “not very much of it has to do with the actual quality of the movie.” Still, the actor took the criticism “really,...

Seven out of the 20 acting Oscar nominees across Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor were represented this year by people of color. For all of them — Lily Gladstone, Danielle Brooks, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, America Ferrera, Colman Domingo, Sterling K. Brown and Jeffrey Wright — it’s their first career Oscar nomination.
That ties with the same number of diverse acting nominees across acting categories at last year’s Oscars, however it’s down from the nine nominees of color in 2020.
Last year those actors of diverse backgrounds counted Brian Tyree Henry for Causeway and Ke Huy Quan for Everything Everywhere All at Once in Best Supporting Actor (the latter won); Ana de Armas for Blonde and Michelle Yeoh for Everything Everywhere All at Once in Best Actress (the latter won), and Stephanie Hsu from Everything Everywhere All at Once, Angela Bassett from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,...

When it comes to lone acting Oscar nominations, the category with the fewest examples is Best Supporting Actor. After two consecutive years of there being no new additions to that subgroup, Brian Tyree Henry (“Causeway”) became its 54th member in 2023 after having been largely ignored by other awards bodies over the preceding weeks. He directly followed Tom Hanks, who is the only other entrant from the last five years.
Within the last decade, this club has only grown by seven, with those who preceded Hanks and Henry being Robert Duvall, Sylvester Stallone, Michael Shannon, Willem Dafoe, and Christopher Plummer. 2018 marked the fifth instance of two men accomplishing the feat at once, thus tying the category’s record for most bids of this kind in a single year. Contextually, the corresponding Best Supporting Actress record is three, while that of both lead categories is four.

BAFTA released their nominations on January 18 and, it’s fair to say, they were pretty wild. There some shocking omissions, including Greta Gerwig being snubbed for Best Director for “Barbie” and Lily Gladstone missing out on a Best Actress nomination for “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
The flip of that side, however, means that there were a few pleasant surprises in the British academy’s lists. None more so than Teo Yoo, who reaped a Best Actor bid for his stirring performance in Celine Song‘s “Past Lives.” The A24 movie follows two former childhood best friends who reconnect as adults and find that they are still drawn to each other. Yoo delivers a quiet performance but is commanding and appealing on screen, at once a mysterious figure of masculinity and a gentle soul who, in many ways, still is his childhood self. It’s a delicate performance but a powerful one.

Charles Melton hasn’t had a great week. First, he missed out on the BAFTA longlist for Best Supporting Actor. Then, he was snubbed by the Screen Actors’ Guild Awards in their list of official nominees. The two notable omissions have damaged Melton’s chances of an Oscar nomination for his breakout role in Todd Haynes‘ exquisite “May December.”
The Netflix movie follows Natalie Portman as an actress who visits a couple (Julianne Moore and Melton) to do research on them for a film based on the couple’s past scandal. The 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards gave us our first true surprises of this year’s awards season. Since it is the first major kudos with five-nominee slots in each category, there was a number of snubs in the acting categories, one of whom was Sandra Hüller for “Anatomy of a Fall,” in a sea of exclusions that included Leonardo DiCaprio (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things”), Andrew Scott (“All of Us Strangers”), Greta Lee (“Past Lives”), Fantasia Barrino (“The Color Purple”), Rosamund Pike (“Saltburn”), America Ferrera (“Barbie”), and the trio of actors from “May December”: Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore and Charles Melton.
But fear not, they all still have hope yet for receiving recognition from the academy, particularly Hüller, who is the only performance from an international film in the bunch. She plays Sandra Voyter in Justine Triet‘s award-winning film, a woman who tries to...

Eileen is an unsettling and hypnotic piece, wrapped in a thick blanket of New England snow but with creeping tendrils of toxicity throughout. Anchored in two compelling performances by Thomasin McKenzie and Anne Hathaway, it lingers like smoke. Its subject matter is more than difficult, content warnings should apply. The cruelties of institutions, be they the boys' reform school that brings them together or law enforcement or families and repeatedly their intersections, are writ large in action and small in gesture.
Adapted from her own book by Ottessa Moshfegh with co-writer Luke Goebel, there are significant changes made to the text. Goebel and Moshfegh have co-written before. 2022's Causeway was an original idea. Though Eileen was a (prize-winning) début novel it does seem that experience with film has allowed changes for the better. They both in their own way tell you what their endings will be, but how they get from.

A24 has confirmed that they’re re-teaming with Halina Reijn, the director of their slasher satire Bodies Bodies Bodies, on a erotic thriller called Babygirl – and an impressive cast has already been assembled for the film. Here’s the line-up: Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos), Antonio Banderas (Desperado), Harris Dickinson (The Iron Claw), Sophie Wilde (Talk to Me), and Jean Reno (Léon: The Professional).
According to Deadline, Reijn will be working from a screenplay she wrote herself. The story she crafted for this one centers on a successful CEO who begins an illicit affair with her much younger intern. Given the “thriller” part of the “erotic thriller” description, we have to assume that this affair goes terribly wrong in some way… probably in a way that involves more than just hurt feelings.

Novelist Ottessa Moshfegh is still in the midst of adapting her hit novel “My Year of Rest and Relaxation” into a feature film.
The sensational 2018 book follows an unnamed woman who, just after the turn of the millennium, escalates her use of sleeping pills to try and stay mostly unconscious for a full year. So far, it’s only been turned into a 2020 stage play in Switzerland.
After Margot Robbie’s production company LuckyChap optioned the rights to the book in 2018, rumors swirled of “Poor Things” auteur Yorgos Lanthimos being attached to direct. (IndieWire has reached out to check up on this.) Moshfegh with her partner Luke Goebel more recently adapted her own novel, 2015’s “Eileen,” for the forthcoming William Oldroyd film starring Anne Hathaway and Thomasin McKenzie, out from Neon in December. “Eileen” premiered at Sundance in January and centers on two women who form a dark bond in 1960s Massachusetts.

The searing confrontation amplifies the dimensions of racial conflict in America in this adaptation of the stage show first presented...

It is a rare thing when just the studio attached to a movie can get butts in seats, but that is just what Independent Film Company A24 has done since they were formed in 2012. From humble beginnings with the Roman Coppola directed A Glimpse Inside The Mind of Charles Swan III to break out hits like Ex Machine and The Witch. More recently the studio became the first one to ever sweep the top six awards at this past years Oscars when their films Everything Everywhere All At Once and The Whale took home Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director and Best Picture. As their latest film Talk To Me continues to put up impressive numbers at the box office, we wanted to know: What A24 releases has been your favorite? We compiled a pretty comprehensive list, but if you don’t see your favorite listed,...

Sarah Paulson will return to Broadway in Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ play, Appropriate.
The play, directed by Lila Neugebauer, will begin previews at Second Stage’s Hayes Theater starting Nov. 28, with an opening set for Dec. 18. Paulson was last on Broadway in the 2010 run of Donald Margulies’ Collected Stories, where she starred opposite Linda Lavin, and most recently on stage in the 2013 off-Broadway run of Lanford Wilson’s Talley’s Folly.
This production is the Broadway debut for Jacobs-Jenkins, whose plays, Gloria and Everybody were both Pulitzer Prize finalists. Appropriate first premiered off Broadway in 2014 and won the Obie Award for best new American play, an honor it shared with An Octoroon, also written by Jacobs-Jenkins. Exclusive: Apple TV+ Has Grown Its Library by 35% in the Past Year as Streamer Hits Viewership Highs
When it comes to keeping subscribers happy and engaged, one of the tried and true methods that streaming services have employed since the dawn of this era of media is to offer libraries so chock full of steady streams of content, that it would be impossible for any one viewer to ever watch it all. However, one subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service has bucked that trend, and in doing so has remained relatively small in comparison to its competitors, but is becoming increasingly invaluable to contentious customers. By keeping its streaming offerings limited — and not to mention star-studded — Apple TV+ has cultivated a reputation for consistently delivering some of the best series and films on streaming without the unnecessary swings and misses that other streamers force viewers to wade through.

Apple TV+ scored a nomination at the Emmy Awards for their commercial starring Timothée Chalamet.
“Call Me with Timothée Chalamet” is competing in the Outstanding Commercial category. The spot was produced by Mjz and created by Tbwa/Media Arts Lab.
The ad shows Chalamet enjoying the programming on Apple’s streaming service that included the Best Picture Winner Coda, Jennifer Lawrence-starring film Causeway and Selena Gomez’s documentary My Mind and Me.
Chalamet then starts questioning why he doesn’t have a documentary like Gomez or imagining himself doing tv after seeing a billboard that celebrates Ted Lasso for winning an Emmy.

In the fall of 2021, Olivia Colman scored her first career Emmy for “The Crown” despite not having succeeded on her Oscar bid for “The Father” that spring. This made her the 16th performer to prevail at the Emmys directly after going home empty-handed at the Oscars and the fourth to do so during the 21st century. Now that the 2023 Emmy nominations ballots have been released, eight of the 16 actors who lost Oscars at the most recent ceremony officially have shots at joining Colman on this list.
Gold Derby’s Emmy odds currently indicate that the man and woman with the best hopes of following in Colman’s footsteps are Brian Tyree Henry and Hong Chau, who just received their first career Academy Award nominations for their respective supporting turns in “Causeway” and “The Whale.” Henry is seeking his second comedy supporting Emmy notice for “Atlanta,” while Chau could pull double...

Jennifer Lawrence is hilarious. Sure, she made her name as an actor in dead-serious indie dramas (The Burning Plain, Winter’s Bone), franchise tent poles (The Hunger Games trilogy, those X-Men 2.0 blockbusters), the kind of nerve-shredding films that fall somewhere between horror and thriller (House at the End of the Street, Passengers), and whatever category you care to slot Mother! into. Filmmaker David O. Russell figured out early on that Lawrence was a perfect fit for his skewed, neurotic dramedies, and it’s impossible to think that Silver Linings Playbook and...

J-Law is headed back to theaters this weekend! The newest Jennifer Lawrence flick “No Hard Feelings” makes its theatrical debut on Friday, June 23. Fans haven’t seen a new movie from Lawrence since “Causeway” premiered on Apple TV+ last fall, and her latest film will be a big tonal departure from that drama.
Lawrence plays Maddie in “No Hard Feelings,” an Uber driver whose car gets repossessed. On the brink of losing her childhood home, Maddie discovers an intriguing job listing: wealthy helicopter parents looking for someone to “date” their introverted 19-year-old son, Percy, before he leaves for college. To her surprise, Maddie soon discovers the awkward Percy is no sure thing.
As of now, the film sits at 64% on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers praise Lawrence’s dramatic and comedic skills, but say the film’s plot is somewhat hollow (which is par for the course for a raunchy comedy like...

There are few things certain in this world, but we know this much: comedy remains, as always, the most subjective of genres. Also, Jennifer Lawrence’s status as a generational talent remains unchanged. Fresh off two straight-to-streaming efforts, Don’t Look Up, a wan sci-fi satire, and Causeway, a character-driven drama, Lawrence brings her supply of comedic talent, along with her often untapped dramatic range to No Hard Feelings, a middling raunch-com that works best, when it works at all, as a highlight reel for Lawrence’s fearless willingness to embrace her character, Maddie Barker, a directionless 30-something who can’t see beyond the childhood memories entombed in the family home left to her by her late mother. To be fair, it’s neither Lawrence’s nor co-writer and director Gene...

Jennifer Lawrence has a number of accolades under her belt. She is known for her work in a number of successful films, with credits including the Hunger Games film series, the X-Men franchise, "Silver Linings Playbook," "American Hustle," "Don't Look Up," and most recently, "No Hard Feelings," which is out in theaters now. Among her many accomplishments, the Oscar-winning actor is also a mom to a son with husband Cooke Maroney, whom she married in October 2019 after dating for a little over a year.
Despite being a high-profile star, Lawrence is notably private about her personal life, and unlike many celebs, she doesn't have any public social media pages. This privacy extends to her child, Cy Maroney, whose name was revealed months after his birth in February 2022. Regarding privacy and parenting, the "Causeway" actor explained to Vanity Fair in a January 2022 cover story, "Every instinct in my body wants to...

Jennifer Lawrence is at the place in her career where she can do, basically, whatever project she wants. Whether it’s an indie drama that she produces, such as “Causeway,” or a raunch R-rated comedy like “No Hard Feelings,” Lawrence is really able to flex whatever acting muscles she wants. And apparently, that’s not limited to the world of film.

After her return to the world of character-driven indie cinema last year with the drama “Causeway,” which she also produced, it seemed Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence had found her way back to the kind of grounded cinema on which she cut her teeth. Yet her latest film as star-producer, “No Hard Feelings,” directed by Gene Stupnitsky, is about as hard a pivot as is cinematically possible.

Had Katniss Everdeen and the “X-Men” series never gotten in the way — or, had we still lived in an era when superheroes or fantasy franchises were not seen as status symbols on the resume of a young superstar — Jennifer Lawrence would have already starred in numerous rom-coms by now, à la the Julia Roberts of the 90s. Especially after winning the Oscar for one a decade ago, with David O. Russell’s “Silver Linings Playbook.”
But better late than never says Gene Stupnitsky’s “No Hard Feelings,” a genuinely witty and somewhat clumsy romantic comedy, that feels more like an honest-to-god movie than many of the rushed and straight-to-streaming examples of the genre we’ve seen in the recent years.
Written by Stupnitsky (of the heartily funny “Good Boys”) and John Phillips, this light pick-me-up of a flick is as eager to please as Lawrence is to show off her luminous physical comedy skills,...

His profile having risen steadily over the previous ten years with “Orange Is the New Black,” “The Umbrella Academy,” “Carol,” “The Big Short,” “First Cow” and recently “Showing Up,” John Magaro is on the verge of a career break and his very first Oscar nomination for playing an empathic husband forced to navigate a love triangle in Celine Song’s universally praised debut feature, “Past Lives.” Critics have been highlighting him ever since the A24 release premiered to rapturous reviews at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.

Motherhood has been a journey for Jennifer Lawrence, and she's being honest about it. Back in April 2022, People confirmed that the actor welcomed her son with husband Cooke Maroney, their first child together. She later revealed his name, Cy, in her Vogue October 2022 cover story. According to the actor, her son is named after postwar American painter Cy Twombly, one of Maroney's - who's also an art-gallery director - favorite artists. But that's not the only fun fact we've learned about Lawrence's little one.
The Oscar winner told E! News that she's convinced "he'll love 'The Hunger Games'" when she shows it to him one day. But she's definitely straying away from letting him watch her raunchy R-rated comedy, "No Hard Feelings," in the near future. "I don't think he'll want to [watch]," Lawrence joked. "I don't worry about him pushing play on that."

One of this summer’s most anticipated comedies is the R-rated “No Hard Feelings” starring Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence. The Sony Pictures film opens June 23, 2023 and promises a change of pace for the actress best known for her dramas, like “Winter’s Bone,” “Joy” and last year’s “Causeway.” Much of her work brought her Academy Award nominations in the previous decade, so with “No Hard Feelings” on the horizon, let’s look back at Lawrence’s four exciting Oscar races.
Her first Academy Award nomination came in 2010 in the Best Actress category for her dramatic performance in “Winter’s Bone,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and became the little indie that could throughout the rest of the year. She had appeared in a few movie and TV projects before this one, but “Winter’s Bone” was the movie that put the young actress on the map.

Jennifer Lawrence is putting her past dreams of directing to the side.
The “No Hard Feelings” actress revealed during Good Morning America that she is not looking to helm a project anytime soon.

The “Winter’s Bone” breakout star was attached in 2015 to direct “Project Delirium,” based on the New Yorker article “Operation Delirium” published in 2012 about military doctors running experiments on soldiers during the Cold War. Lawrence previously revealed ambitions to direct since she was 16.
Now to GMA, Lawrence, who produces director Gene Stupnitsky’s “No Hard Feelings,” shared that she was hesitant to even jump back into working after welcoming her first child with husband Cooke Maroney, whom Stupnitsky actually introduced her to.

Late last year, Jennifer Lawrence had returned to her indie roots as she starred in an intimate character drama titled Causeway, which dealt with grief, forgiveness, acceptance, and moving on. Lawrence will be venturing into lighter-hearted material, still meant for mature audiences, but in a different manner. She is starring in the raunchy comedy, No Hard Feelings. The title is a double entendre, which plays on the concept of her character being hired to take the V-card of a socially awkward college-bound teen by his concerned parents.
The comedy comes from Gene Stupnitsky, who had co-wrote 2011’s Bad Teacher and 2009’s Year One. He recently helmed Good Boys, which was a shake-up of an American Pie-esque movie, only this time involving younger boys, and their ultimate goal was to kiss a girl. Here, Stupnitsky once again plays with conventions in a script he co-wrote with John Phillips, who had produced...

An Uber driver without a car, Jennifer Lawrence finds herself financially stuck in a new trailer for the R-rated comedy “No Hard Feelings.” That is, until a wealthy couple offers her a Buick Regal if she agrees to “date” their awkward 19-year-old son before he goes off to college.
“You won’t even rent your house out, but now you’re gonna rent out your vag?” one of Lawrence’s friends asks upon learning about her arrangement, to which Lawrence responds: “You have a Road Runner tattoo covering your entire back, I don’t think you should tell anybody what to do with their body.”
In the trailer, Lawrence frantically circles a high school party in search of Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman), barging into bedrooms only to find teenagers sitting on their phones. “Doesn’t anyone fuck anymore?” she asks, stupefied.

In August 2021, the fall of Kabul was seen in news coverage taking place in real time, as the Taliban took hold of Afghanistan’s capital only a few days after the American armed forces pulled out of the country following a two-decade-long presence. After 20 years of hard-won gains, under Taliban rule, women in the country were almost immediately barred from education after the sixth grade, could not leave their homes without a male chaperone and were barred from working.
Afghan filmmaker Sahra Mani had left her home a few days prior to Kabul’s collapse to attend a film festival in Europe. Unbeknownst to her, she would not return. “I never thought, ‘This will be the last time I pack my suitcase and close my door,’” says Mani, who is currently living in France. “Even now I don’t remember if I closed my window properly or not.”

This article contains spoilers for season 4, episode 6 of "Barry."
There have been some amazing cameos in the fourth season of HBO's "Barry," including Guillermo Del Toro, "Coda" director Sian Heder, and Fred Armisen, but we almost got a cameo from none other than Jennifer Lawrence. The "Hunger Games" and "Causeway" star would have played herself, much like Heder, and it could have given her a chance to show off both her dramatic and comedic chops. In the end, showrunner and star Bill Hader decided to take the story in a different direction that omitted Lawrence's role, and we got something completely different (and totally terrifying) instead.
Hader sat down with The Wrap to discuss the sixth episode of season 4, which he detailed as a chaotic experience that ultimately turned out great. There were several storylines that got changed or dropped, so Lawrence's wasn't the only one, but from what it sounds like,...

Hader sat down with The Wrap to discuss the sixth episode of season 4, which he detailed as a chaotic experience that ultimately turned out great. There were several storylines that got changed or dropped, so Lawrence's wasn't the only one, but from what it sounds like,...

The premise of the limited series “Class of ‘09” is a familiar form of dystopia: in the near future, law enforcement has come to rely on technology that skirts the line between police work and a police state. “Class of ‘09” shares a blueprint with classics like “Minority Report,” then adds a timely twist. The FX show’s Orwellian innovation is an algorithm powered by artificial intelligence, the kind of tool now at the center of all kinds of public anxiety, including the ongoing writers strike.
“Class of ‘09” is created and written by Tom Rob Smith, the British scribe best known to Americans as the force behind “The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” the second installment of Ryan Murphy anthology “American Crime Story.” That season, an underrated masterpiece, scrambled the typical chronology of true crime, beginning with the titular murder and winding backwards through Andrew Cunanan’s serial killing spree.
