Before I ever saw William Friedkin's classic horror film "The Exorcist," my mother gleefully shared with me all of the horrific urban legends and unexplained mysteries that surrounded the film's production. She believed, as do countless others, that "The Exorcist" was one of many cursed films. The face of a possessed Regan MacNeil was terrifying, to be sure, but movie magic meant to scare me couldn't hold a candle to the inexplicable dread that had me convinced filmmakers daring to tell this story made them a target for actual evil. While I'm old enough now to know better than to believe in cursed films, it's still a fascinating rabbit hole to fall into. Hell, the horror movie streaming app Shudder even has a two-season documentary series called, you guessed it, "Cursed Films" discussing cinema's most controversial and conspiracy-surrounded film sets. Now, a new narrative horror film is dabbling in the world of cursed films,...

Netflix originals have always been the biggest draw for the streaming juggernaut, and their true crime documentary offerings have been so popular that they've been spoofed by both "Black Mirror," and the brilliant satirical mockumentary series "American Vandal." Released just in time for the Halloween season, the latest documentary, "The Devil on Trial," has been dominating the top 10 charts across the globe. The film is the latest from Peabody Award-winning and three-time BAFTA-nominated British writer, director, and producer, Chris Holt, and tackles the first and only time demonic possession was used as a defense in an American murder trial. Taking place in 1981, the trial made headlines as the "Devil Made Me Do It" case, as 19-year-old Arne Cheyenne Johnson claimed that he was not guilty in the murder of his landlord, Alan Bono, because he was possessed at the time of the killing.

There's no question that the moviegoing experience has changed since the "The Exorcist" became a landmark cultural event when it was released the day after Christmas in 1973. Anyone that waltzed right in to see "The Exorcist: Believer" in theaters this October would have been shocked by the long lines snaking around the block to see the controversial original when it took the world by storm almost 50 years ago. It's unlikely that any other film will ever match that particular watershed moment in horror ever again.
"The Exorcist" marked the first time a genre film had ever received an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. Notably, the entire production garnered 10 nominations, winning two for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound. In the decades since its release, "The Exorcist" has retained its well-deserved status as one of the scariest movies ever made, having left an indelible mark on generations of unassuming spectators that...

There are some films that have picked up a reputation for being cursed. While bad things, sometimes very bad thing, happened on set or in the aftermath of their release, they, with the exception of The Twilight Zone, pale when compered to The Conquerors or The Sword Of Tipu Sultan. In the former half the cast and crew contracted cancer as a result of filming in the fallout of American nuclear tests, and in the latter 62 died when the studio burnt down. What links the so called cursed films addressed here is genre.

The legacy of The Exorcist, directed by William Friedkin, is truly immense. For example, the most popular horror saga of our times, which started with The Conjuring, owes it everything. However, the impact of the 1973 film goes beyond the screen. When I interviewed occult writer Mitch Horowitz, on the occasion of the Blu-ray release of the documentary series Cursed Films, he commented that “most people in the United States and Latin America perceive exorcism or demonic possession based upon what they experienced through that movie. Even if they’ve never seen it, the ideas from that movie have become so influential that people who speak about exorcisms are probably forming their point of view from that movie. If The Exorcist never got made, it’s very...

Shudder, the streaming service focused on horror, thrillers and the supernatural, said Tuesday it has passed the 1 million subscriber mark.
AMC Networks launched Shudder in 2015. The company has pursued a niche streaming strategy, a contrast with larger media rivals launching mass-audience services like HBO Max, Peacock and Disney+. AMC executives have projected the company will end 2020 with close to 4 million total subscribers across Shudder and streaming siblings Acorn, Umc and Sundance Now.
Another of AMC Networks’ offerings, housed in a different part of the company, is AMC+. That subscription service, formerly called AMC Premiere, brings premieres of shows ahead of their linear TV airings, ad-free viewing and other bonuses to viewers on Comcast and Dish pay-tv systems.
Original programming is always the coin of the streaming realm, Shudder’s premiere of Creepshow last September prompted a surge in customer acquisition and engagement, the company said. A second season is in production.

The documentary series Cursed Films explores five different horror movies that, for one reason or another, have been considered 'cursed.' After several difficulties emerged during the filming of The Exorcist, such as the death of Max von Sydow’s brother and a fire that destroyed the set, this William Friedkin film was sold on controversy, becoming one of the most influential and stigmatized (just think Linda Blair) horror movies of all time. Weird stuff surrounded the production of Richard Donner’s The Omen as well, after a religious consultant told them that the devil itself was going to try to stop the shooting. Daily Dead had the opportunity to catch up with Cheel recently and during our interview, he discussed how Cursed Films came together at Shudder as well as his experiences during the interview process for the series, the controversy surrounding the tragic deaths on Twilight Zone: The Movie, and more.
First of all, congratulations on season two. Getting to come back, that has got to be a really good feeling for you, I'm sure.

Writer/director Jay Cheel's love for the strange has been on display in pretty much all of his work, including his two feature documentaries Beauty Day and How to Build a Time Machine. And so his venture into TV feels like it was perfectly suited for the director, especially on the heels of his short film Twisted in which he explored a bizarre 1996 event in which a drive-in theatre playing the movie Twister was destroyed by a tornado.
Written and directed by Cheel, "Cursed Films," currently streaming on Shudder, is a five-part documentary series, exploring the myths and legends behind some of Hollywood's doomed productions, often thought to be cursed. Over the course of the series, Cheel takes a deep-dive into The Exorcist, Poltergeist, The...

The thing about curses is that when you obsess over them, their omens appear to multiply. Such is the case for Cursed Films, the cult docuseries on the Shudder streaming service in which some of the most famous “curses” associated with popular Hollywood films are re-explored and in some cases recontextualized. The series, which is one of the streaming service’s biggest hits is also coming back for more, with Shudder announcing Cursed Films Season 2 is a go Thursday afternoon.

I am not one to usually write up how well a show or series premieres on a given network. But, I was quite taken with the new Shudder original series Cursed Films, the docu-series that looks beyond popular myth and legend of some of our favorite horror films. I must be in good company because another record number of viewers watched the premiere last week. Cursed Films was the second most-watched series premiere for Shudder and the most-watched documentary premiere. If these numbers were bolstered by new subscribers taking advantage of the one free month Shudder is offering, or, the sheer number of us obeying stay-at-home orders provided a true-to-word captive audience, should not matter. Cursed Films is a good series and worthy of...

As a child of the ‘80s, the so-called Poltergeist curse looms largest in my memory amongst films supposedly plagued by supernaturally bad luck. And as a paranormal pop culture researcher, the fact real skeletons were used in the finale’s swimming pool scene makes the notion of a curse all the more compelling. As purely a storytelling device, a curse would make sense; it tracks. Of course there is most likely no truth to it either.
To be sure, there is indeed tragedy connected to the film. Most notable is the murder of 22-year-old actress Dominique Dunne in November 1982–five months following the film’s June release–and the death of 12-year-old Heather O’Rourke during the filming of Poltergeist III due to complications from an undetected bowel obstruction.
The premature deaths of the two were enough to create the notion of a cursed franchise, which was only exacerbated by the revelation of the skeletons…...

Hello again, dear readers. Right now, we’re living in unprecedented times, and it’s nice that, if nothing else, we still have entertainment to help us through all of this. Most of us are preparing for another month of self-isolation and thankfully we have a ton of horror and sci-fi titles hitting various VOD and Digital platforms throughout the month of April. Also, I decided to feature some special streaming events here as well, beyond the regular digital releases we usually get, as I thought it might be helpful to have as many distractions as we could possibly get over the next few weeks or so.
Later today, the Salem Horror Fest is hosting a virtual premiere for Mass Hysteria over on Facebook Live and the very next day, Shudder’s new series, Cursed Films, kicks off with their first episode on The Exorcist. The next installment of Blumhouse’s Into the Dark series,...

If you’re a movie fan, then chances are you’re already familiar with the concept of “cursed films,” which is when a project’s legacy has something of a sinister undertone to it due to extenuating circumstances beyond any sort of normal production woes. And for their new series entitled Cursed Films, Shudder is diving into whether or not films like Poltergeist, The Omen, The Exorcist, The Crow, and Twilight Zone: The Movie were actually doomed from the start, or victims of being dealt an unfortunate hand by fate.
The two episodes this writer had the opportunity to check out were for Tobe Hooper’s Poltergeist as well as Richard Donner’s The Omen, and for the most part, I found them extremely entertaining, although admittedly, neither one was very in-depth as a whole.
