Chuck Norris is known for his roundhouse kicks and his action star persona in the ‘80s and the ‘90s. He starred in films such as Good Guys Wear Black, Breaker! Breaker!, and The Octagon. Though he did not reach the level of other action stars of the era such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, he still held his ground. The actor was known for being proficient in martial arts and was also known to have trained many celebrities in martial arts before he became an actor.
Norris made his big screen debut with Bruce Lee’s The Way of The Dragon. The action star has a minor role as Colt, who is recruited by the antagonist to fight against Lee’s Tang Lung. Norris and Lee reportedly developed a friendship when they met at the All-American-Karate Championship tournament, where the Silent Rage star was a two-time world champion.

It was just last week we were celebrating the 20th anniversary of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which catapulted Michel Gondry into the Hollywood system with the likes of Be Kind Rewind and The Green Hornet. After the failure of that superhero tentpole, he retreated back to France, directing a handful of smaller-scale features, the latest of which, The Book of Solutions, gets meta following a filmmaker struggling with the editing of his big-budget project. Gondry is now mounting his return to Hollywood, the details of which have now been unveiled.
Deadline reports he’s directing an untitled coming-of-age musical, which is loosely inspired by the upbringing of Pharrell Williams. Set to star Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, coming off her Oscar win for The Holdovers, the Universal-backed project is set in 1977 Virginia Beach. In the "Star Trek" episode "The Enemy Within", Captain Kirk (William Shatner) beams up from the planet Alpha 177 covered in a mysterious magnetic dust. Unbeknownst to any of the Enterprise crew, the dust has fouled up the transporter and created a second Kirk inside its memory buffer. After Kirk leaves the room, the second Kirk materializes ... but displays an altered personality. It seems that Kirk has been bifurcated into a gentle version of himself and a cruel, aggressive version of himself. For much of "The Enemy Within," the Evil Kirk stalks around the halls of the U.S.S. Enterprise, startling the crew and accosting Yeoman Rand (Grace Lee Whitney). Gentle Kirk soon realizes that he needs his aggression back in order to be whole. Eventually, the two Kirks confront one another.

Seth Rogen has carved out a very unique niche for himself. As a producer, Rogen has been at the helm of some very successful adaptations of superhero comics like Invincible, The Boys, Tmnt, and Gen V. However, the actor-producer has been public about his reluctance towards working with superhero giants like Marvel and DC, but it looks like that might change with the latest project that he has put in development.
Venom, as he appears in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
It has been reported that Seth Rogen is developing yet another Spider-Man universe, this time focused on Venom, in the form of an R-rated animated film, which will be distinct from Tom Holland’s MCU Spider-Man, Tom Hardy’s Sony Venom series of films and Sony’s animated Spider-Verse films. Given Rogen’s track record with R-rated comic book properties, it seems the project is in good hands, which...

Michel Gondry hasn’t worked with a Hollywood studio since the 2011 comedy “The Green Hornet.” But he’ll do so for his follow-up to last year’s “The Book Of Solutions” for what’s arguably the most peculiar project in his filmography. Deadline reports that Gondry heads to Universal to direct an untitled coming-of-age musical set in 1977 Virginia Beach. The project is the brainchild of Pharrell Williams, inspired by the music producer’s childhood living in the the city’s Atlantis Apartments.

Michel Gondry is about to make a lot of people happy, teaming with Pharrell Williams, Kelvin Harrison Jr. and recent Oscar winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph for Atlantis, a new film that is partly inspired by Williams’ upbringing.
While no plot details have been unveiled, according to Deadline, Atlantis is “a coming-of-age musical, set in 1977 Virginia Beach, which draws inspiration from Williams’ childhood growing up in the city’s Atlantis Apartments.” In addition to Gondry signed on as director, screenwriters on board are Toy Story 4’s Martin Hynes and Tick, Tick…Boom’s Steven Levenson.
Atlantis was revealed back in 2017. While Hynes was attached even as far back as then, originally Michael Mayer – who won the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical for Spring Awakening – was set to direct.

Eureka Entertainment announced today that they will be releasing Jet Li’s martial arts extravaganza Black Mask on Blu-ray on April 23rd.
Influenced by Bruce Lee’s role as Kato in The Green Hornet, Black Mask stars Jet Li as Tsui Chik, “a librarian who leads a quiet, unassuming life – or, at least, that’s what he wants people to believe. In truth, he was once a member of the 701 Squad, a group of elite combatants produced by a failed super-soldier project. In-kind with his former comrades, his central nervous system has been altered to render him impervious to pain. When several of his fellow test subjects resurface and embark on a crimewave under the leadership of their former commander Hung Kuk (Patrick Lung), Tsui is forced to use his extraordinary abilities once more. Donning a costume, he sets out to face his past – as the vigilante known as the Black Mask.

Martial arts drama Warrior has been cancelled by Sky – but there’s an outside chance that Netflix may make more episodes.
Before he became an international kung fu superstar thanks to films like Way Of The Dragon, in which he famously went hand to hand with Chuck Norris in Rome’s Colosseum, and Enter The Dragon (which features an equally iconic climactic battle which takes place in a hall of mirrors), Bruce Lee was an integral part of what made seminal 1960s show The Green Hornet a huge success.
Although his film career soon took off, had things turned out differently Lee would have continued to make an impact on the small screen. He’s generally accepted as being involved in creating the concept for Kung Fu, the drama that eventually starred David Carradine as Kwai Chang Caine, the pacifist who ended up in several fights every week.

Bruce Lee was a famed martial arts expert who completed only a handful of films before his untimely death in 1973 at the age of 32. Let’s take a look back at all 6 of his films, ranked worst to best.
Born in the Chinatown neighborhood of San Francisco, CA, in 1940, Lee was raised with his family in Kowloon, Hong Kong. He began appearing in several films as a child, often in small bit roles, but abandoned acting to pursue a career in martial arts.
His hiatus from the screen didn’t last long. In 1966, Lee was cast as Kato in the short-lived television adventure “The Green Hornet,” later making appearances as the character on “Batman.” He played a small role in the mystery film “Marlowe” (1969) as a kung fu fighter who destroys private eye James Garner‘s office before suffering a tragic demise.

Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron have gotten to usher in a new era of action thanks to their efforts from both 87Eleven and 87North productions with their respective films, John Wick and Atomic Blonde. Both films aimed to combine the chaos and extended sequences of gunplay action with raw, gritty martial arts in a stylized manner. Additionally, Seth Rogen had dabbled a bit in crossing over into action with Pineapple Express and The Green Hornet with various responses.

Shannon Lee, daughter of the legendary actor and martial artist Bruce Lee, recently told The Telegraph that she remains unaware why Quentin Tarantino decided to portray her father as “the a-hole” in his 2019 movie “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Shannon Lee spoke out against the film’s portrayal of Bruce Lee at the time, which led to a highly-publicized back and forth between her and Tarantino in many interviews.
“It’s interesting. I actually don’t know,” Shannon says now about the reasoning behind Tarantino’s controversial portrayal of Bruce Lee. “I’ve never met [Tarantino]. I don’t know what his issues are with my father. Clearly, he thinks my father is cool, because he has borrowed from him quite a bit. But at the same time, I think he has been told a lot of stories by people who have encountered my father and had a negative reaction.

Has it really only been three years since Leigh Whannell's "The Invisible Man" came out? The "Saw" and "Insidious" writer's 2020 reboot was the first of its kind after Universal's infamous putting of the cart before the horse with the Dark Universe (although we did get a hilariously incomplete trailer featuring Tom Cruise screaming on a plane for our troubles). Abandoning the shared universe concept, Whannell's "Invisible Man" re-imagines its source material -- both the original 1897 H.G. Wells novel and Universal's 1933 film adaptation -- as an incredibly timely story about domestic abuse, gaslighting, and tech-powered violence. The result is a taut sci-fi horror/thriller that boasts some remarkable low-budget filmmaking (as well as one of the most shocking kills put to screen in recent memory).
Despite hitting theaters right before the global Covid-19 lockdowns, "The Invisible Man" managed to gross nearly 20 times its $7 million budget. It was exactly the...

To clarify right away, James Bond, Jr. (Corey Burton), the title character from a barely-remembered 007-adjacent 1991 animated series, is not the son of James Bond. More confusingly, James Bond, Jr. is actually the nephew of James Bond. "He learned the game from his uncle James," the theme song makes very clear. This means that James Bond did indeed have a brother, but also that his brother was named James as well ...?
As of this writing, "James Bond Jr." is the only TV adaptation to date of Ian Fleming's ultra-popular James Bond book series. It came at a fascinating time in the history of the James Bond franchise, as Timothy Dalton's two-film run had come to an end, and a messy rights dispute behind the scenes kept Bond off the big screen for years. This month marks 50 years since Bruce Lee’s sudden death at the age of 32, and likewise the semicentennial anniversary of his highest-profile feature, Enter the Dragon. Released by Warner Bros. on Aug. 17, 1973, director Robert Clouse’s action film stars Lee as a Shaolin monk recruited by British intelligence to compete in a martial arts tournament and track down a crime boss named Han (Shih Kien). The stakes are raised when Lee learns that the man who killed his sister is working as a bodyguard for Han.
Before Enter the Dragon, Lee was known for playing Kato on the 1960s ABC series The Green Hornet and Batman, and for starring in several kung fu films in the early 1970s, including The Big Boss (1971) and Fist of Fury (1972). But it was Dragon — his second Hollywood movie after a small role in 1969’s James Garner-led Marlowe — that became his signature title and made him a global icon.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been an unusual mainstay in popular culture for decades, so they might be seen as occupying an unusual subgenre unto themselves. Originally created in 1984, the Turtles were intended as a satire of the ultra-gritty superhero comics of the time, Frank Miller's "Daredevil" comics in particular. The absurd title and weird premise, however, caught on, and by 1990, the Turtles were starring in TV shows, video games, and a live-action feature film. In 2023, the Turtles are entering what might be their 20th unique continuity with the release of Jeff Rowe's "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem." They have come a long way since their superhero-inflected origins.
"Mutant Mayhem" was co-written and co-produced by Seth Rogen, who also plays the voice of Bebop, a mutant warthog. As a producer, Rogen has had a long, prolific, and quite interesting career. His movies tend to be lightweight...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has convinced countless Hollywood A-listers to participate in its sprawling superhero saga over the past 15 years. But don’t expect Seth Rogen to join the stable any time soon.
In a new interview with Polygon, Rogen explained that he is hesitant to work on a massive franchise due to fears about compromising the writing process he has developed with longtime partner Evan Goldberg.
“Honestly, probably fear,” Rogen said when asked about what has stopped him from making a Marvel or DC movie. “We really have a pretty specific way we work; me and Evan [Goldberg] have been writers for 20 years at this point. It’s a fear of the process, honestly. And I say that knowing nothing about the process. There are a lot of Marvel things I love.”

If you’ve ever wondered when it was that Michel Gondry, the gifted French director of “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” became the world’s most annoying filmmaker, you might say the answer is, “He always was.” Yet no one, including me, quite thinks of him that way. That’s because the few works of his that have come to prominence possess a special combination of facility and charm. I adore “Eternal Sunshine,” a virtuoso movie that bends your brain and breaks your heart at the same time. You might simply choose to characterize it as the masterpiece of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, but the truth is that Gondry directed it — the leaps in time, the emotionally convulsive performances of Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet — with a masterful sense of play and gravitational control.

Gary Kent, an actor, director and, most notably, stuntman whose career is thought to have been an inspiration for Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, died Thursday at an assisted care facility in Austin, Texas. He was 89.
Born on June 7, 1933, in Walla Walla, Washington, Kent’s early film credits include 1959’s Battle Flame, and roles in other low-budget films of the 1960s including The Black Klansman (1966) and biker film The Savage Seven (1968). In 1969, he served as a stunt double for Bruce Dern in the now-cult-classic Richard Rush-directed exploitation film Psych-Out.
Among his other credits were such drive-in movie favorites as Peter Bogdanovich’s first film Targets (1968), featuring Boris Karloff, 1970’s Hell’s Bloody Devils and, the following year, The Incredible 2-Headed Transplant and Angels’ Wild Women.

The film world is still reeling from the recent loss of actor Rick Dalton, whose passing was first announced on May 19th, 2023 by The Video Archives Podcast's official Twitter account. Dalton, who passed away at his Honolulu, Hawaii home (shortly after celebrating his 90th birthday in April), is survived by his wife, one-time Italian starlet Francesca Cappucci.
The Video Archives Podcast, created and hosted by filmmakers Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary, aired an episode on May 22nd that is apparently part one of a multi-episode run that revolves around the directors' memories of Dalton and his work.
While other friends and fans of the actor such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt have yet to make any official statements or remembrances, Tarantino has made sure that Dalton's name isn't fading into the ether like so many stars of yesteryear. The "Pulp Fiction" director made sure to include a tribute to...

Quentin Tarantino is expanding the Rick Dalton lore in the remembrance of the late (and invented) movie star.
The “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” auteur announced May 19 that Dalton, played by Leonardo DiCaprio in the 2019 film, died at the age of 90. Dalton’s 1969 exploits alongside stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) were captured in Tarantino’s “Hollywood,” during which Dalton saves Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) from the Manson family would-be serial killers.
During Tarantino and “Pulp Fiction” co-screenwriter Roger Avary’s recent entry in the “Video Archives Podcast,” Tarantino remembered the late fictional action star.
“Dalton was beloved by fans of ‘Bounty Law,’ where he played bounty hunter Jake Cahill for five seasons and also for his iconic role as Eddie Karpinski, the flamethrower-wielding vigilante in ‘The Fireman,’ ‘The Fireman Part 2,’ and ‘The Fireman 3: CIA Crackdown,'” Tarantino said. “But he was so much more than that, with...

Ten years ago, Michel Gondy was directing “Mood Indigo,” his freewheeling and fanciful adaptation of the 1947 French novel “L’Écume des Jours” starring Audrey Tatou. And then he got lost.
“My brain was working in a different way,” he said over Zoom in a recent interview. “Each idea I had, no matter how important or small it was, became about life and death. Every little thing became super important. I felt like I was reaching ultimate creativity.”
He now looks back on the whole experience as a result of his delusional state. The movie ran long and over budget, angering Gondry’s investors. He escaped to the French countryside with his post-production team to finish the project on his own terms. The movie ran over two hours and got mixed reviews; a shorter version was released in the U.S. by Drafthouse Films several months later.

After more than 40 years in the business, Christoph Waltz’s list of awards – including two Academy Awards, two Golden Globes and two Baftas – may be almost as long as his filmography. His first performances, for example as Maksymilian Gierymski in 1997’s Our God’s Brother or Karl August in 1999’s The Bride, probably won’t be familiar to audiences outside of Germany. But then he made the crossover to Hollywood, thanks to Quentin Tarantino casting him as Hans “the Jew Hunter” Landa, a Nazi, in 2009’s Inglourious Basterds, and again as the dentist turned bounty hunter Dr King Schultz in 2012’s Django Unchained.

Donnie Yen has shared his view on Quentin Tarantino’s controversial depiction of Bruce Lee in his latest film.
In Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, a fictionalised version of the martial arts star, played by Mike Moh, is shown to be offended when Brad Pitt’s character, Cliff Both, mocks him for claiming he could beat Muhammad Ali in a fight.
It’s because of this that, in front of a crowd of people, Lee challenges Cliff to a fight, following which he is humiliated after Cliff beats him by throwing him into a car door.
At the time, Lee’s daughter, Shannon, criticised Tarantino for the “disrespectful” depiction, stating in The Hollywood Reporter: “I’m tired of white men in Hollywood mistaking his confidence, passion, and skill for hubris and therefore finding it necessary to marginalise him and his contributions.”

Donnie Yen believes “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” makes an obvious statement on Bruce Lee.

Michel Gondry's superhero film "The Green Hornet," adapted from the 1936 radio adventure serial and subsequent 1966 TV series, was not well received when it hit theaters in 2011. The film currently has an unremarkable 44% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and falls frustratingly between high-energy superhero parody and crass, low art comedy. "The Green Hornet" was written by its star Seth Rogen and his frequent writing partner Evan Goldberg, and the two seemed to feel that Rogen's slobby screen persona would be enough to freshen up an otherwise pat vigilante story.
Rogen and Goldberg also united in 2014 to direct the controversial film "The Interview," a movie about a pair of "Daily Show"-style news comedians (Rogen and James Franco) going to North Korea specifically to assassinate Kim Jong-un (Randall Park) under the subterfuge that they will be interviewing him. The film attracted ire from Korea, seeing as it indirectly threatened a dictator's life,...

The actor has been complaining about the hurt that critics can deliver. But someone has to call out stinkers, as you would think he’d agree
Seth Rogen: negative film reviews are ‘devastating’
We’ve now had expressions of protest from both the violent and non-violent wings of the anti-bad-review movement. The Hanover State Opera’s ballet director Marco Goecke confronted the Frankfurter Allgemeine ballet critic Wiebke Hüster in the theatre foyer and smeared dog excrement in her face. Now the comic and movie actor Seth Rogen has shared his views on criticism in an interview with Steven Bartlett’s Diary of a CEO podcast, declaring how upset he was at bad reviews for his films The Green Hornet and The Interview. “I think if most critics knew how much it hurts the people that made the things that they are writing about, they would second guess the way they write these things.

It’s a rare Hollywood actor who hasn’t been involved with a project that was savaged by critics, and it’s easy to assume that stars are so thick-skinned that they can easily brush off scathing reviews.
Seth Rogen, however, is revealing that isn’t necessarily the case.

“It’s devastating. I know people who never recover from it honestly — years, decades of being hurt by [reviews]. It’s very personal… It is devastating when...

Seth Rogen is a man of many talents. He’s an actor, writer, weed enthusiast, potter, and maker of movies of varying quality. In addition to starring in critically-acclaimed films like Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, An American Pickle, and The Lion King, Rogen has acted in his share of clunkers, including Sausage Party, This is the End, Monsters vs. Aliens, and more. Reviews of his projects cover many emotions, with some critics going out of their way to slam some of Rogen’s most memorable films. While some filmmakers are prepared to let the chips fall where they may and permit critics to have their time in the sun, Rogen is clapping back, saying negative reviews can be harmful in ways people don’t anticipate.

Seth Rogen has gotten plenty of good reviews throughout his career – a look at his Rotten Tomatoes page shows a lot more red (good) than bad (green) – but the bad ones really sting. During a recent appearance on the “Diary of a CEO” podcast, the multi-hyphenate creator opened up about self-doubt and how negative press affects him and other creative people. He said that he experiences self-doubt when “a cultural institution tells everyone that I suck.” Asked by host Steven Bartlett if that kind of criticism hurts, Rogen replied, “Oh yeah! Of course. It hurts everyone. Yes. Very much so.”
“I think if most critics knew how much it hurt the people that made the things that they are writing about, they would second guess the way they write these things,” Rogen continued. “It’s devastating. I know people who never recover from it, honestly. Years, decades of being hurt...

Seth Rogen has made some critically-acclaimed movies like The Fabelmans and has starred in some not-so-great films throughout his career. The actor is now opening up about how reading opinions from film critics can be very hurtful.
“I think if most critics knew how much it hurt the people that made the things that they are writing about, they would second guess the way they write these things,” he said on the Diary of a CEO podcast. “It’s devastating. I know people who never recover from it honestly, years, decades of being hurt. It’s very personal… It is devastating when you are being institutionally told that your personal expression was bad. That’s something that people carry with them, literally, their entire lives and I get why. It f****ing sucks.”
One of the films that received a lot of negative reviews was 2011’s The Green Hornet. However,...

Seth Rogen got brutally honest about film critics during a discussion about mental health and self-doubt on the “Diary of a CEO” podcast. The comedian told host Steven Bartlett that negative reviews from critics “hurt everyone very much.”
“I think if most critics knew how much it hurts the people that made the things that they are writing about, they would second guess the way they write these things,” Rogen said. “It’s devastating. I know people who have never recovered from it honestly – a year, decades of being hurt by [film reviews]. It’s very personal…It is devastating when you are being institutionally told that your personal expression was bad, and that’s something that people carry with them, literally, their entire lives and I get why. It fucking sucks.”
Bartlett brought up Michel Gondry’s 2011 superhero comedy “The Green Hornet,” which starred Rogen as the eponymous hero opposite Jay Chou and Cameron Diaz.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between.
Today we bring in the great Mitchell Beaupre to discuss our final Listener’s Choice ‘22 pick: Cameron Diaz. Our B-Sides are: The Last Supper, The Invisible Circus, The Box, and Gambit.
We chat about Diaz’s underrated range, her penchant for taking risks, the stratospheric, star-making entrance in her first movie The Mask, and the similarities she shares with recent B-Side subject Michelle Pfeiffer.
Mitchell, Conor, and I discuss how weirdly great Any Given Sundayis (and how great Diaz is in it!), how well those Charlie’s Angels movies have aged, and that whole Green Hornet moment.
For more from The B-Side, you can check out highlights of actors/directors and the films discussed in one place here.
