Timmy wants to enter Lassie in a contest to win free tickets to the circus, he must say why she is such a good pet.
First we get a flashback of Lassie saving Ruth Martin, who is caught ina cougar trap. The remarkable dog breaks thru a window here, as she ironically does in the first episode.
So now Timmy has to get the letter submitted by the end of the day.
Hurry, girl, get the letter to the postman.
Then the postman is blinded by a low-hanging branch.
Lassie, go get help. I can't see.
So Lassie goes and finds a farmer chasing his cow.
Lassie, stop the runaway cow.
lassie catches the cow's rope, stopping it and takes the farmer back to the postman.
In the process, the letter is destroyed.
But the little girl who competed with Timmy for the contest gets the farmer and the postman and they all go to the radio station to say what Lassie did and why the entry wasn't received in time.
