As confirmed by Deadline today, Jon M. Chu, one of cinema's premiere makers of cinematic musicals, will be adapting the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice operetta "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" for Amazon Studios. In addition to directing, Chu will produce the film alongside Scott Sanders, who worked on Chu's adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda's and Quiara Alegría Hudes' stage musical "In the Heights," released in 2021.
"Joseph" is an outsize, rock-forward, expressionistic rendition of the Book of Genesis, telling the story of the Coat of Many Colors. In Genesis, Joseph was given said garment by his father, much to the chagrin of his jealous brothers, who began to plot against him. Joseph was thrown into a pit, with one of his more benevolent brothers planning to rescue him later. He was eventually dragged out and sold into slavery. In the Webber/Rice musical, Joseph eventually gets out of bondage...

We hear Chu has been “dreaming” about Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat for years, and he is now set to direct for Amazon Studios.
Scott Sanders
The director is currently in the UK filming Wicked for Universal Pictures and Marc Platt Productions with a cast that includes Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey and Jeff Goldblum.

Thanks in part to Les Misérables success, Joseph will see technicolour treatment on the big screen, says Andrew Lloyd Webber
It's been a school play, a concept album, a West End hit and a BBC talent show. Now, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is to become a feature film.
Andrew Lloyd Webber, who last week revealed that discussions were ongoing for a screen version of Cats, has now confirmed that Joseph will get the big-screen treatment.
Appearing on The One Show on BBC1, ahead of the official opening of his new musical, Stephen Ward, Lloyd Webber said the film "was definitely happening … That's actually been signed on the dotted line."
The musical, which was first performed at London's Colet Court school, in 1968, has been filmed once, in 1999, with Donny Osmond in the lead role – though it went straight to video. That version also featured Richard Attenborough, Joan Collins and Maria Friedman.

Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber has revealed that Simon Cowell snubbed his idea of a West End-themed TV talent show.
The composer said he discussed the idea of finding a lead star for a musical through an ITV show with the X Factor star, but it failed to materialise.
"I remember this conversation I had with Simon in Barbados... if we could do something," The Sun quotes Lord Lloyd-Webber as saying.
"That went nowhere. I thought I would get Maria through doing a singing talent competition."
Lord Lloyd Webber went on to front such TV shows as How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? and Any Dream Will Do on the BBC.
He also revealed how he almost landed Scarlett Johansson to play Maria in the London production of The Sound of Music.
He said: "I wanted to star Scarlett Johansson. It was all agreed - I wanted a girl...

Andrew Lloyd Webber has explained why he is making his new show Superstar with ITV rather than the BBC. The composer made previous talent hunts How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?, Any Dream Will Do, I'd Do Anything and Over the Rainbow with the BBC and it was initially suggested that the broadcaster had passed on the new programme. "The people at ITV now were the same ones who took a gamble on me in the first place at the BBC, so that's why I have moved over," Lloyd Webber told the Daily Mail. "ITV wanted very much to do a programme with me. They got very excited when I said, 'I don't really want to do another stage show, I'm thinking of an arena tour of Jesus Christ Superstar'. They said that was something they would really like to do, too." BBC presenter Graham Norton said...

Lee Mead has admitted that he’s not sure if Cheryl Cole was ever intended to be a judge on the American X Factor series.
The Any Dream Will Do winner – who is married to Cole’s pal Denise Van Outen – told New magazine that he wouldn’t be surprised to find out that the sacking of the Geordie singer earlier this month was no more than an elaborate PR stunt.
Mead said: “The cynic in me wonders if it was all just a PR stunt.
“When I was in a talent show it did go through my mind that things might be manipulated for the press.
“But if not, she’ll dust herself off. Denise knows Cheryl and she’s always had nothing but praise for her.”
Nicole Scherzinger’s former manager Jeff Haddad seemed to reiterate these claims and he insists Simon Cowell always wanted his former client as a judge.

The traveller community is reportedly planning to make their own version of ‘Britain’s Got Talent’.
‘Travellers Got Talent’ will showcase the skills of gypsy singers, dancers, performers and rappers for a panel of judges in a show that will try to emulate Simon Cowell’s ITV hit series.
Last summer, hundreds of performers with Romany and Irish roots took to the stage as part of a nationwide talent contest in Sussex – which was judged by Seamus Cullen from BBC One’s ‘Any Dream Will Do’ – and TV bosses are now reportedly keen to transform the event into a huge hit.

He told the Daily Star newspaper: “When I was approached regarding the ‘Big Fat Gypsy Weddings’ series, I mentioned I had organised ‘Travellers Got Talent’ last year. People were very keen on it.

Denise Van Outen has admitted that she is a fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Over The Rainbow. Earlier this year, the TV presenter suggested that one of the reasons she was dropped from the judging panel of the show was that she was expecting a baby. Andrew Lloyd Webber backed up her assertion, claiming that it would have been unfair on the Dorothy contestants if Van Outen had missed episodes due to the birth of her child. The BBC has frequently denied the allegations that Van Outen was dropped from the show, pointing out that the panel was a completely different lineup from previous Webber talents hunts such as I'd Do Anything and Any Dream Will Do. Speaking about the pregnancy axe reports on GMTV today, the former Big Breakfast star said: "There is some truth in that, I was in discussions to do the show - (more)...

John Barrowman has defended Andrew Lloyd Webber's BBC talent shows, arguing that they benefit the West End. The actor and singer, 42, claimed that programmes such as How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? and Any Dream Will Do had given unprecedented exposure to musical theatre. "It's a formulaic way to find someone that works and that creates a £16 million advance. It gave the West End and musicals exposure that no other TV programme or network would have done," he told the Daily Telegraph. "It was massive because, as I've been saying for years, there's a market out there in the general public for musicals. I understand why people go, 'Ugh, we don't like it', but I look at it this way - all the shows that (more)...

Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber has confirmed that he scrapped plans for a Wizard Of Oz talent show following a dispute with the BBC. Last month, it was reported that the theatre composer had cancelled the project amid fears that the corporation would be accused of promoting his new musical Love Never Dies. The search for a budding actress to play Dorothy in a stage version of L. Frank Baum's novel was the planned successor to Lloyd Webber's previous BBC shows How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?, Any Dream Will Do and I'd Do Anything, which made stars of Connie Fisher, Lee Mead and Jodie Prenger. However, Lloyd Webber has now admitted that the show could not go ahead after he refused to agree to "nonsensical" demands from the BBC. He also hinted that he may decide to work on an ITV version of the programme in the future.
