Claymore (Charles Nelson Reilly) accidentally starts a fire at Gull Cottage and housekeeper Martha (Reta Shaw) calls for the volunteer fire department of which he is chief. Captain Gregg (Edward Mulhare) and his ghostly ways puts out the fire, but the Keystone Cops-esque firefighters arrive only to see their antiquated fire engine catch fire. They've left their hose nozzle back at the fire house and Mrs. Muir (Hope Lange) puts it out with her garden hose. "That's a switch," says Martha. "The house putting out the fire engine." Mrs. Muir insists the city buy a modern fire engine to protect them against the wishes of council president Claymore who has misappropriates funds for past trips to the Bahamas. She visits bumbling Fire Commissioner Lilly (Avery Schreiber) who writes an order for the engine to be inspected. Claymore finds loopholes in the regulations, but the Captain will have his input in the inspection to comedic effect.
There's finally some crisp comedy in this episode that had been lacking for some time in the series, in my opinion.
