CITY DETECTIVE – Desert Ice - 1955
This is episode 51 of the 1953 to 1955 Police series, CITY DETECTIVE. Rod Cameron headlines as a Detective in a major U.S. city. The series ran for a total of 64 episodes. The series featured quite a few well-known actors in guest bits. These include, Hugh Beaumont, Whit Bissell, Marie Windsor, Carolyn Jones, Fess Parker, Angie Dickinson, Russell Johnson, Claude Akins, George Macready, Beverly Garland, Ann Savage and Lee Van Cleef.
In this episode, Detective Rod Cameron is on an assignment to bring in a fugitive. The man, Andy Clyde is an old guy living out in the California desert country. The man has been on the lam for years. Cameron is sent to grab him because he had been the cop that first arrested Clyde years before. Clyde, who lives in a tumbledown shack in the middle of nowhere, offers no resistance and agrees to go quietly.
On the drive back to civilization, Cameron and Clyde come across a broken down car with a couple of city types, Ross Elliott and Sandra Stone. They ask for a ride to a town the opposite way Cameron is headed. Cameron insists he is going the other way, but offers to drop them at the nearest telephone.
This offer is rejected with a less than friendly gesture as both Stone and Elliot pull guns. They insist on going their own direction and shoot Clyde to get the point across to Cameron. The pair, Elliott and Stone, throw their bags in Cameron's car, and head back the way he just came. It seems the two had robbed a big city jewelry store and had planned on cutting across the desert to Nevada.
A few miles up the road, Cameron floors the car on a downgrade and leaps out. The car wrecks at the bottom, but Elliott and Stone crawl out with their bags. Cameron hotfoots it back to Clyde's cabin. He'll need water and maybe a weapon if he can find one.
While rummaging through the shack, a bloodied and battered Clyde stumbles in. The old bird is tougher than he looks. Cameron bandages him up as best he can, then carries him out to the rocks behind the shack. He knows Elliott and Stone are going to show up soon. Cameron fills a water bag etc and takes it out to Clyde. He returns to the shack to destroy the water pump for the well.
Elliott and Stone however show up quicker than Cameron figured. Cameron catches a round in the leg as he runs out into falling darkness. He joins Clyde in the scrub filled hillside. With the wound, he knows there is no way to walk out to the highway. They will need to wait out the two criminals.
Needless to say Stone and Elliott soon have a falling out over what to do next. Up on the hillside, Cameron and Clyde hear several shots from the cabin. The next morning, Miss Stone comes out and calls up to Cameron. She gives up. She does not wish to die in the middle of nowhere. She points to the front of the cabin where the corpse of her ex-partner, Elliott lays. "He won't be a problem." Stone says. She then offers Cameron both guns.
Cameron comes down to grab the guns. Stone then offers to split the jewel take with him if Cameron will help her escape. Cameron nods at the corpse and replies, "Partners with you looks like a losing idea. It is jail for you." Stone smiles and whips out a small automatic. "I thought you might need a bit of persuasion so I keep this." Cameron, also prepared, tosses a dead rattle snake he had killed the night before at Stone. Stone leaps out of the way and goes arse over tea kettle down the hill. Cameron scoops up her automatic. A long stay in the crowbar hotel is in Stone's future.
A pretty good 25 minute Policer. Nice to see something made out on location.
There is plenty of film and television experience in this one. Cameron, a top 10 box office star several times in the late 40's had roles in 120 plus films and series. Veteran bit player, Elliott, had roles in 350 plus television episodes. He is best known as lawman, Mark Abbott in the long running series, THE VIRGINAN. Andy Clyde started out in Mack Sennett silent films in 1921. He played many sidekick types in westerns for Hop along Cassidy and the like. He had roles in over 500 films and television episodes.
