For a 20 odd minute cartoon from the 1970s, this cartoon had surprising similarities to the novel. Differences? He met a male warrior instead of a girl and the cartoon covers only some events from the first half of the book, but you can't really expect a short cartoon to fully cover an entire novel.
Ted Cassidy, Lurch on The Adams Family television series from the 1960s, plays a warrior Tarzan is forced to fight to the death in the arena. This happened in the novel as well.
In the book, Tarzan visited the second city in the valley and help depose a tyrant. He wound up with friends in both cities, which were eternally at war with each other. It's too bad they didn't make a two-parter (or more) and cover that story, too.
