do not watch this
dispet25 September 2007
this film is one of the worst Australian films i have ever seen. it is one of the worst horror films i have ever seen. it is unoriginal and cliché laden, the script should not have been filmed, it should have been burned. no concern has been spent trying to develop a reality in which the story could occur. no energy has been spent trying to make anything in this film interesting. instead it is just part ju-on, part ring, with a dash of snuff. though, even that makes it sound a tiny bit interesting, which it absolutely is not.

this film was so pointlessly bad that i only continued watching to see if it could outdo itself and keep getting worse. in this case it did not let me down. it wasn't even funny bad, it was a tedious 78minutes. acting and characterisation was dull and dodgy. horror was reserved only for the fact that someone spent a chunk of their lives making it. go and vomit in a toilet instead of watching this film, your time will have been much better spent.

Don't watch me.

This is not scary. It has an awful story line. It also has an awful ending. 4.4 is a bad ratting. But this is such an awful movie that 4.4 is overrating it. This is a 1. This is one of the worst horror movies I have seen. Do not watch this. Not if you want to something scary. If you want to see something scary see The Ring (2001). Do not see this awful movie. This is a waste of time. It is also a waste of money. Do not see it. Do lesion to the people who gave it 5 and higher. I is just awful. It is not a 5. It is a big pile of pooh pooh that stinks. This is just awful.

Unwatchable

I had hopes for this film at the start. Film quality looked good. Made me think of Korean films and I like Korean films. But as it progressed, the lighting seemed off, too bright or too dark. There was something about the cinematography that seemed off. It seemed like it had to many 'hard edges'. I'm not sure how to explain that. It was a visual quality but it was a feeling instead of something you could point to visually. The beginning just wasn't making enough sense. Some of the dialogue felt awkward. I got 15 minutes into the film and decided that I just couldn't watch it. It was a weekend of watching bad horror films and that was the only one out of seven I couldn't watch. Which was odd since most of them had a terrible film quality and this one was sharp and clear. I would not recommend it. I would recommend Deadfall Trail before this. And that was tedious but I finished it. So my bar was set pretty low already.

RING COPYCAT
nogodnomasters25 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The film is a low budget "Ring" rip-off. People die after watching a porno-snuff film either from a disc or on the Internet. A young pale woman with punk dyed red hair appears, walks like something from Juon (at times) and then kills the viewer. Sometimes people disappear a matter of seconds after watching the film, sometimes they drag it out. Because of the low budget aspect you don't see any killing, so they attempt to create suspense by playing the same 4 piano notes over and over. Toward the end of the film we discover there is an additional mystery aspect that wasn't developed, and that is some people who view the film don't get killed, but they don't know why.

The movie has that super VHS quality to it. The best part is that the pain of watching this film lasts for just 78 minutes...if you don't kill yourself before it is over. Lines not well written. Characters not developed. Plot has no sanity.

F-bomb, no sex, no nudity.

Very Well Made Asian-Influenced Horror Flick
gavin694231 March 2007
Tess Hooper is working on her film studies homework when her friend Jill brings some videos from the local cult film dealer. But while Tess is in another room, Jill is killed by an unknown power. Tess and the video dealer join forces to find the source of this phenomenon that spreads via e-mail messages.

I have been viewing my share of low budget and microbudget films lately, and while some are decent, many are not something I'd wish upon my worst enemy (I won't name any titles to protect the film makers). When I found out I was going to be watching "Watch Me" I got a bit excited. The film had a plethora of good reviews floating around, and somehow they tricked the Internet Movie Database into giving them an insanely high rating. Now that I've seen it, I can confirm the hype was accurate. This film stands above the crowd in the world of low budget film.

The film's only real weakness was also its strength, so let's just get this out in the open: the creators obviously wanted to make an Asian horror film. They admit to this on their web site and the film is full of things reminiscent of past Asian films. But again, this is both a weakness and strength: while some aspects were clearly derivative and not original (I saw "Dark Water", "The Ring" and a few others copied in here), the way they were filmed showed great skill and talent like I rarely see.

After the first fifteen minutes (where most of the seemingly unoriginal parts were), the movie really took off on its own. The Tess character was a strong lead and the video dealer (who I believe also wrote this film) was decidedly creepy, yet lovable in an anti-hero sort of way.

The camera shots were great, with extra care being taken to get the right angles, the right pace and in some cases the right lighting and coloration of a scene. Had a higher quality camera been used, this could have passed for a mainstream film, in my opinion.

The music was strong and in some scenes drove the film. One song, first played in a scene with Tess running (and used many times again), added to the feel... I was anxious and anticipating some action. I received that action with some of the better gore effects out there in a low budget film (the eyes sewn shut were maybe not as creepy as in "Pelts", but still very effective).

When all is said and done, this is a cut above the rest. That's really the only expression I can use -- I was treated to something more than the average film here. Some mysteries remained that I wish had been solved, but there's no reason to discount a "Watch Me 2"... a film I'd welcome with open arms. If you want to see how low budget films are supposed to be made, watch "Watch Me".

Effective low-budget horror film
Woodyanders3 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The friends of film student Tess Hooper (a solid and appealing performance by France Marrington) are being murdered one by one. The one thing that links them all together is a strange file that spreads through electronic address books on the computer to find its victims. Director Melanie Ansley, who also co-wrote the absorbing script with Sam Voustas, relates the grimly compelling story at a steady pace, builds a considerable amount of nerve-wracking tension, and does an ace job of creating and sustaining a supremely creepy atmosphere that becomes more potent and upsetting as the harrowing narrative unfolds towards a pleasingly uneasy conclusion. Moreover, Ansley downplays cheap scares and excessive graphic gore in favor of an eerie mood and suspense, although there are some neat moments of jarring splatter sprinkled throughout (for example, all the victims have their eyes sewn shut). The icky subject of on-line porn and snuff movies gives this picture an extra unsettling edge. Marrington's strong acting in the lead carries the day here; she receives sturdy support from Voustas as slimy illegal porn peddler Taku (in a nice touch, Taku winds up becoming an anti-hero of sorts when he reluctantly agrees to help Tess try to stop the killings), Glen Hancox as nice guy cop Sanders, Celeste Barry as hard-nosed detective Rigby, Katrina J. Kiely as the perky Jill, and Tanya McHenry as a deadly and mysterious redhead girl. Xue Feng's crisp widescreen cinematography provides an impressively polished look. The shivery score by Steven Huf, Daniel Jericho, and Christopher Preuss hits the spine-tingling spot. Best of all, the tight 78 minute running time ensures that this film never gets dull or overstays it welcome. A good spooky fright feature.

Well made low-budget horror movie
isaged14 June 2013
I disagree strongly with dispel from Melbourne's review of "Watch Me". I bought it a package with fourteen other horror films which I'm slowly working through. Thus far it's easily the best: excellent camera work, very effective building of suspense, very effective music. I appreciated the absence of nudity – all the more so in a movie about porn films. With perhaps one exception, the actors and actresses are adequate to better than adequate … I didn't say "great", but quite sufficient. The plot is a little hard to follow at times, though that may partly be to problems that I still have comprehending Aussie lingo. At points, especially towards the end, the motivations of the principal characters are baffling: in their situations it would need no menacing background music to make me GIT. However, the movie's underlying idea/gimmick is excellent, and it's carried out splendidly … right down to the end!
