Episode 328 concentrates on a battle of wills between Barnabas and Dr Hoffman, with the former attempting to compel the latter to commit murder for the first time. There are a few flubs and the ring-finding scene which makes the law enforcement seem absolutely stupid, but otherwise this is suspenseful enough.

The candlestick leaves a "clue".

Warning: Spoilers
A sly smile indicates that Barnabas has struck gold by framing Willie, hiding a ring that he had of Maggie's inside a candlestick. It's a good little evil twist to frame the innocent Willie, and if he doesn't succeed that way, he's threatened Julia into killing Willie. Can Julia get herself to do something so evil? Sam and the sheriff (now played by Vince O'Brien) had earlier discussed that Willie may not be the guilty party, and the discovery of the ring which Barnabas cleverly claims to have no awareness of changes all that.
With Barnabas and Julia the two bad guys (although Julia is reluctant to go along with Barnabas' demands), everybody else in the episode is naively unaware of what they are planning. Julia may not be a definitive villain, but she definitely has motivations that are sometimes questionable. Jonathan Frid delightfully plays Barnabas has concern for Willie, here played by an extra as you do not see anything more than a covered figure in an oxygen tent.
