Maggie must suffer torture because of Barnabas's love for her, and for trying to get away, screaming with a hideous fear as he locks her in his coffin. We just saw a very eerie moment as Barnabas rose from his coffin when Willie came in to the room. This is Barnabas at his most maniacal, resorting to unspeakable horrors when he doesn't get his way, a supernatural creature of such narcissism that it's surprising that the writers didn't have him going into big business or run for political office.
This sadly is the last episode for original cast member Mitchell Ryan, soon to be replaced, here working with Sam and the sheriff to find Maggie after she disappears outside her home. The stars of the episode though are Kathryn Leigh Scott and John Karlen as Willie shows great compassion for Maggie in his deluded way of keeping her safe. Scott shines in the last moments, seemingly settled on the idea that she is Josette yet as Maggie fighting it. It's great Gothic melodrama and well written and directed.
