When Laura becomes more desperate, she uses her sex to get what she wants, and visits Burke to get him to side with her in regards to taking David away. Victoria, more suspicious of Laura than ever, tells Burke about all of the strange occurrences that have happened since Laura returned. Laura warns David not to take what people say about her seriously, and then Burke comes in, resulting in a confrontation over the incidents that Victoria told him about. Laura's lies, and her eyes, seem to work their black magic, fascinating as drama but dull as plot development. The manipulation of Burke contradicts everything we've come to know about him, but as Mrs. Johnson quipped in a previous episode, "Well, he is a man".

Episode 173 is another plodding one despite the presence of Mitchell Ryan in the cast and the return of the always-amusing David. Essentially, Burke learns about Victoria's thoughts on Laura and subsequently turns against her.
